Chile's Cochilco says large-scale copper mining costs keep growing

SANTIAGO, Oct 24 (Reuters) - The costs of large-scale copper mining in Chile kept rising due to lower production and rising service costs, a report from the state-run Chilean Copper Commission (Cochilco) said on Tuesday.

The report, which covers the first half of the year, said that the direct cost reached 198.8 cents per pound, a year-on-year increase of 39.6 cents.

Botswana’s ODC halts diamond sales as industry seeks to reduce glut

Botswana’s state-owned Okavango Diamond Company (ODC) has temporarily halted its rough stone sales as part of an industry-wide drive to reduce the glut of inventory caused by lower global demand for jewelry, its managing director Mmetla Masire said on Tuesday.

ODC, which reported a record $1.1 billion in revenue in 2022, holds 10 auctions a year to sell its 25% allocation of production from Debswana Diamond Company, a joint venture between Anglo American’s (AAL.L) De Beers and Botswana, in terms of the partners’ gem sales agreement.

Anglo American Q3 2023 Production Report

Duncan Wanblad, Chief Executive of Anglo American, said: “Production in the third quarter overall was consistent with the same period in 2022. A 42% increase in copper production as Quellaveco's contribution ramps up was offset primarily by De Beers, as Venetia transitions to underground operations, and by performance at Moranbah and the Grosvenor ramp-up at the underground Steelmaking Coal operations.

Anglo American Lowers Copper Output View Despite Rise in Production

Anglo American said its third-quarter production rose 4% on quarter, but that it slightly lowered its full-year production guidance for copper due to a fall in its output in Chile.

The mining company said Tuesday that it produced 42% more copper in the third quarter, at 209,000 metric tons, versus the preceding quarter's result due to a progressive increase in volumes from it Quellaveco mine in Peru.

"Our focus is on delivering our full year production guidance in line with a planned stronger second half of the year," Chief Executive Duncan Wanblad said.

Full-year production guidance for all other metals were maintained, as well as full-year costs guidance for all metals.

De Beers says G7 needs to consult industry on planned Russian diamond ban

LONDON, Oct 19 (Reuters) - Global diamond company De Beers on Thursday urged G7 leaders to debate plans to ban Russian diamonds from 2024 with governments and industry in major producing and processing countries to try to end protracted deadlock.

Group of Seven countries are this week expected to discuss four proposals prepared by Belgium, India, a French jewellery industry group and the World Diamond Council.

The differences between the proposals explain why a ban, in the works since 2022 as part of sanctions on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine, has been difficult to agree so far.

The collaboration will focus on driving traceability across copper’s fragmented value chain, with the aim of identifying and measuring sustainability indicators that industry stakeholders and end customers deem most relevant and valuable. Amplats sees no immediate rebound in low platinum metals price

JOHANNESBURG, Oct 5 (Reuters) - Anglo American Platinum's (AMSJ.J) CEO said he expected the low metal prices companies in South Africa are currently grappling with to persist, and he was aligning the business for the possibility that they would not rise for some time.

Prices for platinum-group metals, which have declined rapidly over recent months, could remain depressed, Craig Miller, CEO of the world's biggest platinum miner by value, told Reuters.

"I really hope I am wrong but the way I am setting up the business is that those prices are in place for a bit of time," Miller said in an interview.

The Anglo American (AAL.L) unit and its South African peers, including Sibanye Stillwater (SSWJ.J) and Impala Platinum, (IMPJ.J) had been raking in windfall profits as prices for the metals, which are used in catalysts that curb toxic vehicle emissions soared.

Anglo CEO says miners must make "tough decisions" to remain profitable

Oct 5 (Reuters) - Anglo American (AAL.L) CEO Duncan Wanblad said on Thursday mining companies have to confront tough decisions such as cutting costs as weak metal prices hit earnings, a day after the group announced plans to shed an undisclosed number of jobs.

The industry, including South Africa, where Anglo owns iron ore, platinum and diamond mines, is going through "challenging times", Wanblad said in a virtual address to a South African mining conference.
