UK-based hydrogen producer ITM Power will enter the US market, the company announced today. ITM will market a suite of integrated electrolyzer products for a range of markets, including research facilities, manufacturing processes and clean fuel generation for hydrogen powered vehicles. Electrolyzers generate hydrogen utilizing electricity and water, opening the door to 100% renewable hydrogen generation.

"ITM electrolyzers deliver hydrogen at a pressure and quality appropriate to the application, at purities of up to 99.9999%," said ITM Power's chief executive Dr. Graham Cooley. "We can meet the requirements of a hydrogen fuel cell, a hydrogen engine, a hydrogen compressor, a hydrogen store (steel cylinder, composite tank or metal hydride system) or gas chromatography equipment." Each product has been designed to be simple to use and to require a minimum of maintenance, Cooley said.

"This is a significant milestone for ITM," said Ruth Cox, executive director of the US Fuel Cell Council, an industry association dedicated to fostering the commercialization of fuel cells. "We want to congratulate them on this notable success. ITM is joining the growing list of USFCC members that have commercially available products today. These industry successes, like ITM's announcement, are further proof that the US market for hydrogen and fuel cells is robust and poised for growth."

ITM Power will have a booth at the National Hydrogen Association's Conference and Expo in Long Beach, CA, May 3-6, 2010, but their product samples are marooned in Europe, victim of the travel disruption caused by the Icelandic volcano eruption. "We are delighted to be exhibiting at NHA," said Cooley, "and we do not intend to let volcanic activity delay our launch! We urge all to come and discuss our products and the exciting applications that they bring to the market place today."

ITM will be at Booth #415 at the NHA conference, and will be presenting on "Application of Optimization Techniques for Efficient Hydrogen Refueling Station Design" at 1:30pm on Wednesday May 5th in Parallel Session 3, Room 202B. To arrange a meeting please call Steve Hallet at ITM Power at +44 7834 693226.

ITM Power is ISO certified. All products are developed in accordance with best practice and are presently subject to CE approval. For further information please visit www.itm-power.com.

ITM Power reports successful high power density fuel cell tests with air rather than oxygen

01 February 2011

UK-based ITM Power has demonstrated exceptionally high power densities in initial testing of its proprietary hydrocarbon membrane materials for hydrogen/air fuel cells. The company says it has achieved more than double the fuel cell power density performance presently available on the market.

ITM Power previously achieved what it says is a step-change from the current state-of-the-art for a PEM fuel cell, recording 5.5 W/cm2 and 10 A/cm2 using pure oxygen. The company has now successfully demonstrated the performance of the membrane in a hydrogen/air fuel cell, achieving over 2.1 W/cm2 and 4 A/cm2. The work is part of a technology development project supported with £108 000 (US$174 000) of funding from the Carbon Trust.

While ITM’s initial investigations focused on hydrogen/oxygen fuel cells, a commercial fuel cell system for use in a vehicle needs to use air as the oxidant. This new, early result with air exceeds the ambitious target of 1.5 W/cm2 set in the Carbon Trust project, and highlights the potential for ITM Power’s materials.

ITM is also preparing to begin its Hydrogen On Site Trials (HOST) program, in which it will use its HFuel transportable hydrogen refueling station with two Ford Transit vehicles adapted to run on hydrogen by Revolve Technologies. A variety of UK trial partners have been signed up, including utility Scottish Water, wind turbine manufacturer Vestas, and leisure operator Center Parcs.

ITM Power (AIM: ITM), the energy storage and clean fuel company, is pleased to announce that UPS (NYSE: UPS) has signed an agreement to participate in the Hydrogen On Site Trials (HOST) of ITM Power's transportable high pressure refuelling unit (HFuel). The HFuel unit was built with support from the Technology Strategy Board (TSB) and was launched at the Company's AGM on 15th September 2010. This portable unit produces hydrogen on-site through water electrolysis, which is then used to fuel ITM's prototype HFuel vehicles.

UPS is the world's largest package delivery company, a global leader in logistics services, and one of the world's most recognized brands, operating in over 220 countries and territories. UPS has more than 100,000 delivery vehicles worldwide, including the largest private alternative fuel fleet in the transportation industry, with close to 2,000 vehicles. UPS runs what it calls a "rolling laboratory" - as well as enjoying the benefits of alternative-fuel propulsion today, the UPS fleet provides valuable data on the viability of different fuel technologies in real-world situations.

Commenting for ITM Power, CEO Graham Cooley said: "The return to base light commercial fleet sector is a key sector for the early uptake of alternative automotive fuels and the addition of UPS to the HOST trials will give us exactly the data and feedback that will make HOST a success. The announcement of UPS as a trial partner now completes phase one of HOST."

Peter Thomas, Automotive Director, UPS UK and Ireland, said: "We are always seeking to improve our performance and reduce our impact on the environment. Taking part in this project is a logical step in our broader "rolling laboratory" approach to alternative fuel technology, and underlines our commitment to providing efficient and sustainable transportation services for our customers."
