TotalEnergies - Erwarten 2022 Verdoppelung unserer Steuerzahlungen
Paris, 21.

TotalEnergies in gas exploration deal with Oman
PARIS, Sept 16 (Reuters) - French major TotalEnergies said in a statement on Friday it had signed a natural gas exploration and production sharing agreement with the Oman energy ministry.

The deal concerns an area called onshore Block 11, with a first exploration well to be drilled in 2023. TotalEnergies will hold a 22.5% interest in the block, OQ 10% and Shell, holding 67.5%, will be the operator.

"Today’s entry into the Block 11 gives us the opportunity to unlock additional potential to meet domestic and export gas demand," TotalEnergies said.

TotalEnergies gas fields could generate $450 mln a year for S.Africa, regulator says
CAPE TOWN, Sept 15 (Reuters) - TotalEnergies (TTEF.PA) 11B/12B offshore gas field could make a direct annual contribution of at least 8 billion rand ($457 million) to South African government finances, the country's petroleum regulator said on Thursday.

"That is not just the overall GDP contribution but is the direct fiscal contribution from the royalties as well as the primary taxes," Phindile Masangane, chief executive at the Petroleum Agency of South Africa (PASA), told delegates at an oil conference.

TotalEnergies lodged its production licence application for Block 11B/12B on Sept. 5 before a deadline expired which might have seen the oil major forfeit its right to develop two huge gas field discoveries - Brulpadda and Luiperd off South Africa's southern coast.

Development of the field will represent a major milestone in South Africa reducing its dependence on imported oil and refined petroleum products, although new gas and oil projects are being challenged in courts amid environment concerns.

Another PASA official, chief operations officer Bongani Sayidini, said that South Africa has an estimated 60 trillion cubic feet (TCF) of offshore gas prospects.

Phase one of TotalEnergies' deep-water field could cost up to an estimated 45 billion rand to develop with first gas seen in 2027, he said.

"Discovered volumes can sustain 560 million standard cubic feet per day," Sayidini said, enough to supply a gas-to-liquid refinery in Mossel Bay currently operating well below capacity due to feedstock shortages.

Excess gas could potentially supply converted Eskom power plants or even a new 3,000 megawatt power plant, he added.

TotalEnergies is the operator with joint venture partners in Block 11B/12B including QatarEnergy, Canadian Natural Resources (CNQ.TO) and local consortium Main Street.

South Africa's coastline remains largely under-explored, although a new well is expected to be drilled in Block 2B on the West Coast next month, said Sayidini.

The Gazania-1 well is targeting two low-risk prospects by operator Eco Atlantic Oil & Gas and its joint venture partners Africa Energy, Panoro Energy and Crown Energy.

Europe can shrug off Putin’s Chinese gas Plan B
Selling more gas to China is one of Vladimir Putin’s oldest pet projects. And it would be a sensible thing to do for Russia, in order to diversify its export markets. Unfortunately for the Russian president, the idea has become both more urgent and less feasible after the war he launched on Ukraine.

European Union governments can ignore the Russian leader’s repeated threats that Moscow will sell to Beijing what Europeans no longer buy. A pivot of Russia’s gas trade towards China may well happen over time. But for the next few years, Moscow won’t have the pipelines, the ships, or even the gas to make Putin’s dream come true.

One pipeline, still in its ramp-up stage, is currently bringing gas to China at an annual pace of some 10 billion cubic metres (bcm), with the potential of delivering 38 bcm at full capacity in a few years. That compares with the 155 bcm that the EU bought in 2021, and 210 bcm of overall Russian pipeline exports. A deal was struck with Beijing for another one in February, and a long-time project to bring gas from the Yamal peninsula may even be agreed someday. But it can take up to 15 years, from conception to completion, to build a new pipeline.

China is also taking some of Russia’s liquefied natural gas, from Russia’s eastern fields. But that’s an area where Western sanctions are hitting hard. To increase deliveries, Russia would need new ships able to break through the ice during the long winter season. But those are made in South Korea, which takes part in the sanctions.

Even if Russia were able to build those ships, they would not be able to transport much extra gas. Gas from the new fields cannot be liquefied without Western technologies, and big Western oil companies such as Shell or TotalEnergies have now pulled out from the projects they invested in.

Finally, if all of Putin’s pet projects with China panned out, the upper limit might be that Beijing may be loath to become too dependent on Russian energy, even though it became the main importer of Russian oil and gas this year as it leveraged its position to extract favourable prices.

Right now, European member states seem to be cooling on enforcing a cap on Russian gas prices. If this is out of fears that Moscow could pivot east, they should relax.

      Context News

Chinese leader Xi Jinping is due to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin this week at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation’s summit in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

This will be the first time Xi has left China in more than two years.

Russian gas monopoly Gazprom said last week that it had signed an agreement with China to start payments for gas supplies to the People’s Republic in yuan and roubles instead of U.S. dollars.

Shell and TotalEnergies oil discoveries in Namibia likely in billions of barrels, minister says
Namibian offshore oil and gas discoveries by TotalEnergies TTE-N and Shell SHEL-N are of commercial quantities, likely in the billions of barrels, the southern African nation’s mines and energy minister said on Friday.

Both companies announced earlier this year that they had made “significant” discoveries offshore Namibia, and are currently making assessments.

The companies did not detail the quantities found but a source told Reuters that Total’s discovery was more than 1 billion barrels of oil equivalent.

The discoveries could make Namibia, the southern neighbour of OPEC member Angola, the latest oil producer along the African Atlantic coast.

“The companies are cautious, but have talked about commercial quantities in billions of barrels,” Namibia Mines and Energy Minister Tom Alweendo told Reuters on the sideline of an oil conference in Dakar, Senegal.

“The commerciality is there. They basically want to make sure that before they commit to production investment, they know what exact quantities are there,” Alweendo said.

He added that the firms are in the process of drilling their second and third wells, and by the end of the year they would have done the appraisals and have estimated figures.

The minister told the conference on Thursday that the companies could start production in four years.

“Both companies are keen to accelerate the process to production and have both mentioned that in four years, they should start producing. It is not something that we imposed, but it is something that we have discussed,” he said.

Oil trio's Northern Lights in Yara CO2 emissions storage deal
STAVANGER — Norwegian carbon dioxide (CO2) storage company Northern Lights and its owners have agreed to store emissions captured at fertilizer maker Yara’s Dutch operation from 2025 in what they say is a commercial breakthrough for the business.

The joint venture founded by oil companies Equinor , TotalEnergies and Shell plans to inject CO2 from industrial plants into rock formations beneath the North Sea ocean floor.

“With the first commercial agreement for transportation and storage of CO2, we open a value chain that is critical for the world to reach net zero by 2050,” Equinor Chief Executive Anders Opedal said in a statement.

Under the deal with Yara, 800,000 tonnes of CO2 per year will be transported on ships from the Netherlands from early 2025.

Northern Lights also has preliminary deals to store CO2 from a cement plant and a waste plant that, if confirmed, will fill the project’s phase 1 capacity of 1.5 million tonnes per year.

Following the Yara deal, the partnership will now work on expansion of its storage capacity to between 5 million and 6 million tonnes of CO2 per year, Equinor said.

The International Energy Agency says carbon capture and storage (CCS) is vital to reducing global CO2 emissions, including from hard-to-abate sectors such as cement production, to curb global warming.

However, there are few commercial projects in existence. Norway tried a decade ago to create a carbon capture project at a gas power plant in a plan once touted as the oil-producing country’s “moon landing,” but it failed because of cost issues.

In addition, some environmentalists says that CCS merely serves to prolong the age of burning carbon for energy and that the world needs a more decisive shift to renewables.

Yara, one of the world’s largest fertilizer manufacturers, uses natural gas in its production processes and has long sought solutions to cutting the resulting emissions.

France’s TotalEnergies said the deal to transport CO2 to Norway and store it 2,600 meters (8,500 feet) under the seabed was a breakthrough for commercial CCS operations.

“TotalEnergies aims to develop CO2 storage capacity of more than 10 million tonnes per year by 2030, both for its own facilities and for its customers,” Chief Executive Patrick Pouyanne said in a separate statement. (Editing by Terje Solsvik, Gwladys Fouche and David Goodman)

TotalEnergies, Eni announce major Cyprus gas find
PARIS, Aug 22 (Reuters) - TotalEnergies (TTEF.PA) of France and Italy's Eni (ENI.MI) on Monday announced a significant natural gas discovery at the Cronos-1 well off Cyprus.

The island reported its first natural gas discovery, Aphrodite, in 2011, measuring around 4.5 trillion cubic feet (tcf) and now run by U.S. energy firm Chevron (CVX.N).

"Preliminary estimates indicate about 2.5 tcf of gas in place, with significant additional upside that will be investigated by a further exploration well in the area," Eni said in a statement regarding the latest discovery.

It marks the third offshore gas find reported in waters off Cyprus, all of them still untapped, and comes as the European Union seeks alternative supply to Russian gas after Moscow's February invasion of Ukraine.

Cyprus and the companies are 'already processing ways to expedite and optimise use of this new discovery, (which will) contribute to efforts of Europe in boosting its energy security,' Cyprus's Energy Ministry said.

Sector rivals Exxon (XOM.N) and Qatar Petroleum are also drilling in the east Mediterranean region where gas output has soared as older discoveries finally bear fruit.

An appraisal well reaffirmed a reservoir of high quality gas in another area south-west of the island, Cypriot authorities said in March. read more

EU member Cyprus, however, has faced strong objection from Turkey over its offshore exploration programme, with overlapping claims of jurisdiction extending from land to sea.

The island was divided after a 1974 Turkish invasion in response to a brief Greek inspired coup.

"This successful exploration well at Cronos-1 is another illustration of the impact of our exploration strategy which is focused on discovering resources with low technical cost and low carbon emissions, said Kevin McLachlan, senior vice president for exploration at TotalEnergies.

He said additional sources of gas supply would contribute to Europe's energy security.

"Studies on a fast-track development options are already ongoing," Eni said.

TotalEnergies and Eni began drilling work at the Cronos-1 prospect in offshore Block 6 in May. read more In 2018 they reported a 'promising' gas discovery at Calypso-1, another well in Block 6.

They are collaborating via local units Eni Cyprus and TotalEnergies EP Cyprus BV and each hold a 50% stake. read more
