Vuzix Taps into Nokia to Design Stealthy Looking "Smart Glasses"

The ambitious folks at Vuzix announced plans to develop what they consider the Holy Grail of the wearable display industry, otherwise known as "Smart Glasses." It's all a fancy pants way of describing a pair of see-through HD glasses in a designer sunglasses form factor, but with Web capabilities baked in.

"Now after years of internal developments and our recent licensing relationship with Nokia Corporation, Smart Glasses Technology is final here," Vuzix explains. "This amazing new technology starts with a compact display engine capable of high contrast and brightness for outdoor use. The output is then relayed into a 1.4mm thick polymer waveguide lens with input and output hologram structures on the surface, which squeezes the light down the waveguide and then two dimensionally expands the image back into the user's eye, creating an image that is then mixed into the real word. And, all this technology neatly fits into the temples and lenses of a conventional pair of eyewear!"


We can't tell if this is some wild sci-fi fantasy Vuzix is chasing or if they went to great lengths to dress up a description of a next-generation HUD and/or augmented reality. Either way, it sounds pretty cool. And since these are "Smart Glasses," they're being designed to work with Smart devices connected to the Internet so you can merge virtual information with the real world. This is where augmented reality could come into play, and while Vuzix didn't specifically spell it out, we envision being able to sync these puppies up with our smartphone. Why we'd want to, we're not entirely sure, but you can bet mobile app developers would step the plate with some interesting software to take advantage of something like this.

Damit ich nicht falsch verstanden werde.
Ich finde die Technik und auch die Einsatzmöglichkeiten der Brille im Privaten wie auch im beruflichen riesengroß.
Darüber sollte aber ein gesundes Maß an Vorsicht gegenüber einem Pennstock nicht verloren gehen. Unternehmen die sich hier bewegen haben leider trotz Ihrer technologischen Wertigkeit es gerade in den finanzschwachen Märkten äußerst schwierig Fuß zu fassen.
Ein Unternehmen wie Nokia an der Seite oder als Partner zu haben ist sicher Werbewirksam. Anderseits hat gerade Nokia derzeit große eigene Probleme im Telefoniebereich und muß sich speziell darum kümmern wenn sie im Telefonie-Markt nicht gänzlich verlieren wollen.

Vergessen sollte man auch nicht daß die Brille nicht auf Rezept verschrieben wird sondern nur gegen harte Dollars oder Euros zu bekommen ist.
Ob Vuzix den Sprung nach ganz oben schafft werden wir sicher dieses Jahr sehen. Viel Glück allen Investierten.

Ich finde das ganz interessant, was die gerade alles neu raus bringen für die CES. Aber die Konkurrenz schläft ja auch nicht...

Ist das hier jetzt eine Werbeveranstaltung oder ein Aktienthread indem man kontrovers über einen Wert diskutiert!
Da muß es ja von Alexander R. eine Menge Kohle für geben!!!!!Zumindest gewinne ich diesen Eindruck wenn 80% und mehr der Posts von dem gleichen User geschrieben sind.
Das schadet für meine Vorstellung der Glaubwürdigkeit!!!

"Video eyewear is typically quite clunky, but Vuzix has been developing some pretty innovative new technology which could completely shape the the future of AR video eyewear.

Vuzix recently announced a technology license agreement with Nokia in Finland to produce see-through waveguide optics for use in near-eye display (NED) systems (head mounted displays and video eyewear), built on Nokia’s see-through (Exit Pupil Expanding) EPE optics technology. The agreement will see Vuzix’s and Nokia’s technology brought together, and it’s expected to accelerate the development and introduction of new NED products to the market.

Under the agreement, Vuzix will be carrying out research and development and is expected to manufacture and bring to market components and products containing the licensed technology. In addition, Vuzix will provide Nokia with access to its products and components which incorporate the licensed technology.

The see-through EPE technology has been developed and prototyped by Nokia over the past decade in various forms and Vuzix believes it has the potential to form the basis for sunglass-styled video eyewear, which could be manufactured in high volume and appeal to mass consumer markets.

“We believe that Nokia’s EPE technology solves a long missing piece in the NED business for creating sunglass-style video eyewear,” said Paul Travers, Vuzix President and CEO. “Integrate this Nokia technology with Vuzix’s advanced display engine developments with partners like Fraunhofer IPMS, and we expect to be able to offer the video glasses that Hollywood and Sci-Fi writers have only been able to imagine.”

IMHO ist hier gut luft nach oben ... oder anders ausgedrückt:

die hier gefällt mir persönlich besser .... wobei teens wahrscheinlich auch auf die monokularen glasses abfahren dürften ... sie brauchen dann aber wahrscheinlich eine taschengelderhöhung ...

In ein paar futurösen Militärfilmen haben wir sie schon alle gesehen und wollten sie seit dem immer mal gerne ausprobieren. Halb durchsichtige Displays auf denen Informationen angezeigt werden und man trotzdem nicht gegen einen Baum oder andere Leute rent. Vuzix hat gleich drei paar von solchen Smart Glasses auf der CES 2012 für uns vorbereitet zum testen und auch schon zum Verkaufen in diesem Sommer. Ein Preis muss noch festgelegt…"

Vuzix designs Smart Glasses to look like sunshades, tout connected transparent display

Vuzix has announced plans to develop a stylish head-mounted display solution in the form of Smart Glasses, through a licensing partnership with Nokia. The yet-unnamed product would integrate a bright, high-contrast display with a pair of seemingly ordinary-looking sunglasses -- sounds like a perfect companion to the ZionEyez in-glasses camera prototype we saw last month. In Vuzix's words:

This amazing new technology starts with a compact display engine capable of hi contrast and brightness for outdoor use. The output is then relayed into a 1.4 mm thick plastic waveguide lens with input and output hologram structures on the surface which squeezes the light down the waveguide and then two dimensionally expands the image back into the user's eye, creating an image that is then mixed into the real world.

Naturally, the company envisions its Smart Glasses solution as a web-connected device, letting you watch videos or browse the internet while still being able to see-and-avoid pedestrians as you walk on the sidewalk or obstacles while behind the wheel -- try doing that with a Kindle or smartphone (better yet, please don't). Vuzix expects its Smart Glasses solution to start appearing as early as this summer, but we'll be getting an early look next week at CES.
