Copper Buyers Want Longer-Term Deals on Supply Concerns, Codelco Says
      https://www.mining.com/web/copper-buyers-want-longer-term-de…
      ...
Copper buyers are so worried about future availability of the metal that they’re seeking to secure longer-term deals than normal, according to top miner Codelco.

The Chilean state-owned company recently signed some contracts for three to five years with customers in Europe, in contrast to the more standard annual deals, Chairman Maximo Pacheco said in an interview.

Copper, which is ubiquitous in electrical goods and power cables, is likely to be central to the energy transition as the world accelerates a shift to renewable power and electric vehicles. Some analysts are warning of a large shortfall as miners struggle to keep up with growing demand.

“We are prepared to continue to strengthen our long-term relations with customers, because we can understand that in their risk matrix, their concern about copper supply is one of their priorities,” Pacheco said. Pointing to forecasts for strong copper demand growth over the next eight to 10 years, he said: “Obviously they have a question: ‘Where are we going to get this copper from?’ Which is a fair question.”

Zinc Surges as Trafigura-Owned Smelter to Halt Production
      https://financialpost.com/pmn/business-pmn/zinc-surges-as-tr…
      ...
Zinc surged after one of Europe’s largest smelters announced it would halt production next month as the continent’s energy crisis threatens to hobble heavy industries.

The Budel smelter in the Netherlands — controlled by Trafigura Group’s Nyrstar — will be placed on care and maintenance from Sept. 1 “until further notice,” according to a company statement. Zinc jumped as much as 7.2% on the London Metal Exchange as traders priced in even tighter supply.

Earlier this month, top zinc producer Glencore Plc warned that Europe’s energy crisis posed a substantial threat to supply. Smelters across the region are barely turning a profit and the 315,000 tons-a-year Nyrstar plant has been operating at a reduced rate since the fourth quarter of last year. Industries from fertilizer to aluminum are being crippled by soaring energy costs as Russia squeezes gas flows to Europe following its invasion of Ukraine.

The decline in European production has seen local LME stockpiles fall close to zero this year, while global inventories remain near the lowest in more than two years.

“There will be a bit of capacity juggling going on,” said Tom Price, an analyst at Liberum Capital. “If the EU need their metal, they will probably have to import more semi-refined material or the metal itself.”

Teck Announces Copper Nickel Projects Joint Venture with PolyMet
      https://www.teck.com/news/news-releases/2022/teck-announces-…
      ...
Teck Resources Limited (TSX: TECK.A and TECK.B, NYSE: TECK) (“Teck”) today announced an agreement with PolyMet Mining Corp. (“PolyMet”) to form a 50:50 joint venture to advance PolyMet Mining Inc’s NorthMet Project (“NorthMet”) and Teck’s Mesaba mineral deposit (“Mesaba”).

The joint venture will be named NewRange Copper Nickel LLC (“NewRange Copper Nickel”). Glencore plc (“Glencore”) will retain its majority equity interest in PolyMet and provide financial support for its share of the funding commitment to the joint venture.

"The NewRange Copper Nickel joint venture brings together two large, well defined mineral resources in the established Iron Range mining region of Minnesota,” said Don Lindsay, President and CEO. “This agreement will help unlock a new domestic supply of critical metals for the low-carbon transition through responsible mining.”

Closing of the transaction will be subject to customary closing conditions, including receipt of all required regulatory approvals.

Chinese Tycoon Behind Big Nickel Short Faces Billions in Losses
      https://www.bnnbloomberg.ca/chinese-tycoon-behind-big-nickel…
      ...
A Chinese tycoon who built a massive short position in nickel futures is facing billions of dollars in mark-to-market losses after the metal surged more than 170% in two days, according to people familiar with the matter.

Xiang Guangda -- who controls the world’s largest nickel producer, Tsingshan Holding Group Co., and is known as “Big Shot” in Chinese commodity circles -- has closed out part of his company’s short position and is considering whether to exit the wager altogether, the people said. Nickel rocketed to a record high above $100,000 a ton on Tuesday, driven in part by Tsingshan and its brokers’ activity, before trading was suspended.

While the exact scale of Xiang’s losses is unclear, Tsingshan’s short position on the LME is in the region of 100,000 tons of nickel, people familiar with the matter said. It could be even larger than that when positions taken through intermediaries are taken into account, people separately said. That means it would have suffered well over $2 billion of daily losses at the most extreme point of nickel’s surge on Monday.

That would come on top of any losses incurred by the tycoon since he began building the short position late last year through closely held Tsingshan.

Tsingshan representatives had no immediate comment on Tuesday.
