Japan`s Sumco to accelerate solar cell wafer production

Tokyo (ANTARA News/Asia Pulse) - Japanese company Sumco Corp. (TSE:3436), the world's second-largest silicon wafer producer, is expanding production of wafers for solar cells. The company plans to increase output without undertaking any new capital spending.

To that end, subsidiary Sumco Solar Corp. will begin full-scale mass production at a large furnace and increase production speed.

Production volume is projected to rise 5 per cent to 110 megawatts in the year ending January 2009. By 2015, Sumco aims to raise annual production volume to 1 gigawatt.

Sumco Expects Sales of Wafers for Solar Cells to Rise 11-Fold

By Mikako Nakajima and Pavel Alpeyev

April 8 (Bloomberg) -- Sumco Corp., the world's second- largest maker of silicon wafers, expects sales of the material used to make solar power cells to gain 11-fold in the next seven years as customers including Sharp Corp. boost production.

Sales of solar-cell wafers will rise to 200 billion yen ($1.9 billion) in the 12 months ending Jan. 31, 2015, from 17.8 billion yen last fiscal year, President Kenjiro Shigematsu said in an interview with Bloomberg Television broadcast today. The company's annual output of the wafers will rise to 1,010 megawatts in the period, from 105 megawatts at present, he said.

Sharp and companies including Mitsubishi Electric Corp. and Sanyo Electric Co. need more wafers to boost production of cells to meet solar power demand. Annual worldwide output of solar cells will probably quadruple to 10,000 megawatts by as early as 2010, according to estimates by the U.S. photovoltaic industry newsletter PV News last month.

``This is a business chance, and we have the technology and confidence'' needed to take advantage of it, Shigematsu said in the interview in Tokyo. The company may speed up production should growth in demand accelerate, he said.

Sales will probably rise 5.3 percent to 500 billion yen in the year ending Jan. 31, 2009, Tokyo-based Sumco, which trails Shin-Etsu Chemical Co. in silicon-wafer production, said on March 6. Net income will probably drop 23 percent to 58 billion yen because of lower prices, a stronger yen and depreciation costs, Sumco said.

Sharp said on March 27 it will invest 72 billion yen to build a new plant that will help increase its output capacity for thin-film solar cells to 1 gigawatt by 2010. Mitsubishi Electric said last month it aims to more than double production of solar power to 500 megawatts by 2012.

      zu verzeichnen;
      während A0... gestern lediglich 1,2% verlor;
zumindest scheinen die 33% ergebnisrückgang ein non-event zu
sein; andererseits zeigt es aber auch das sich im waferbereich
einiges bewegt (stückerlöse scheinen rückläufig zu werden).

As of 12:00 AM ET 11/25/08

Sumco Corp. (TSE:3436) said Wednesday that group net profit tumbled 47 per cent on the year to 29.5 billion yen (US$309 million) for the nine months ended Oct. 31 as the global economic downturn battered the semiconductor industry.

Sales fell 5 per cent to 333.5 billion yen.

The profit fall was steeper than a year earlier, with clients seeking to reduce inventories rather than place new orders. Shipments and prices declined.

Operating profit plummeted 43 per cent to 60 billion yen. Sumco mainly mass-produces 300mm wafers and supplies the chip industries of such nations as Taiwan and South Korea. It boosted wafer output and profit by tapping growing demand in emerging countries for personal computers and cellular phones.

But since the escalation of the U.S. financial crisis in mid-September, orders have plunged. Sales volumes have slipped 20 per cent below year-earlier levels , with prices declining roughly 10 per cent over the same period.

For the full year ending Jan. 31, Sumco has kept unchanged the projection it made in October, expecting sales to drop 9 per cent to 430 billion yen and net profit to nosedive 57 per cent to 32 billion yen.

      Sumco to suspend Omura plant
      Kyodo News

Sumco Techxiv Corp., a Sumco Corp. subsidiary, will suspend silicon wafer production at its factory in Omura, Nagasaki Prefecture, for two weeks starting Dec. 25, sources said Tuesday.

The silicon wafer manufacturer, trying to deal with a worldwide slump in semiconductor chips, has halved the number of the factory's temporary employees from some 400 since late October, the sources said.

The Omura factory, which at its peak manufactured 150,000 30-cm silicon wafers a month, was shut temporarily between Nov. 4 and 6.

The factory has been operating at half its capacity against the backdrop of flagging consumer demand for home electronics appliances such as flat-panel TVs, they said.

UPDATE 2-Sumco expects Feb-July loss on sluggish chip demand

TOKYO, March 6 (Reuters) - Silicon wafer maker Sumco Corp (News) reported a 75 percent fall in annual net profit as microchip manufacturers curbed output amid sluggish demand, and it forecast a loss for the first half of the current business year.

But Sumco, the world's No. 2 silicon wafer maker behind Shin-Etsu Chemical Co, said it expected its earnings to bottom out in February-July, noting that shipments are rebounding after hitting recent lows last month.

Demand for silicon wafers, used to make semiconductors, has been hit hard as chipmakers grapple with chronic oversupply, falling prices and slow demand for electronic gadgets and automobiles.

The chip industry downturn forced some firms, including Germany's Qimonda and U.S.'s Spansion, to file for bankruptcy.

Sumco President Kenjiro Shigematsu said shipments have tumbled to one-third of levels six months earlier, but they seem to have bottomed out in February though they remain weak.

'We think the first half would be the bottom of our earnings, and they should start getting better from there,' he told a news conference. 'Of course we will try to be in the black annually, though the business environment is not that easy.'

Sumco forecast a net loss of 37 billion yen ($377 million) for the fiscal first half to July, down from a 25.61 billion yen profit a year earlier.

Sales are expected to fall 63 percent to 85 billion yen.

It did not give a full-year earnings forecast, citing an uncertain economic outlook. Analysts on average see an annual net loss of 20.4 billion yen.

In the year ended Jan. 31, Sumco's net profit came to 18.89 billion yen, down from 74.88 billion yen a year earlier but roughly in line with a consensus estimate of 18.4 billion yen.

Some analysts have said Sumco's 300mm wafer shipments could start recovering by June after chipmakers cut inventories and on a seasonal increase in electronics demand.

Before the results, the stock closed down 1.9 percent at 1,265 yen. The Nikkei average ended down 3.5 percent.

Sumco to restructure, cut 200 mm wafer capacity

TOKYO, May 29 (Reuters) - Sumco Corp, a Japanese maker of silicon wafers used to make semiconductors, said it would book 12-15 billion yen ($125-$156 million) in losses from restructuring its operations.

Sumco, which competes with Shin-Etsu Chemical, said it would cut production capacity for 200 millimetre and smaller wafers by about 30 percent and consolidate production facilities as part of the restructuring.

Sumco closing silicon plant in Ohio
25 June 2009 | By Mark Osborne | News > Fab and Facilities

Sumco Phoenix Corporation is to close its silicon wafer manufacturing plant in Maineville, Ohio, USA due to the weaker than expected demand and semiconductor industry’s move to larger wafer sizes. The Ohio plant also makes solar silicon ingots, which will also be affected by the closure. Consolidating its operations, Sumco said that production would shift to its other plants in the U.S. and overseas.

“This was a very hard, yet necessary conclusion to reach for the continued survival of our business,” commented Shigetoshi Shibuya, SUMCO Phoenix Corporation President and Chief Executive Officer. “The employees at Maineville have tried valiantly for some time to make this work, and we are extremely grateful to them; however, our operations there have been severely impacted by both the unexpected nosedive of the global economy and changes within the industry itself over the past year.”

Approximately 360 workers will be affected by the closure, which is expected to be completed by June, 2010. Sumco had bought the plant in 1989. It has no current plans to sell the plant or surrounding real estate, the company said.
