RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif., Dec 19, 2000 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- THERMOGENESIS CORP.
(Nasdaq: KOOL) announced today that it has received notice from the U.S. Patent
Office of the issuance of a patent for a disposable device for harvesting the
thrombin component of fibrin sealant from a single donation of human plasma in
less than one hour.
Noting that the Japanese government has announced a ban on drugs containing
bovine materials from 28 countries, Dr. James Godsey, President & COO of
THERMOGENESIS CORP., stated that THERMOGENESIS` CryoSeal(R) Fibrin Sealant
("FS") System will be the first fibrin sealant produced solely from human plasma
proteins, compared to commercially available surgical sealants which contain
bovine substances such as aprotinin, collagen, thrombin, or albumin which
increase the risk to patient of viral or prion infection and/or allergic
responses. Fibrin Sealant is an adhesive gel formed by the interaction of
concentrated fibrinogen and thrombin to form an effective hemostatic agent,
sealant and tissue adhesive in surgery. The Company estimates the current global
market for fibrin sealant is approximately $400 million, growing to $800 million
by 2004.
Philip H. Coelho, Chairman & CEO of THERMOGENESIS CORP., noted that this is the
eighth in a portfolio of patents that provide protection for the Company`s
CryoSeal FS System technology. The CryoSeal FS System is a small, floor standing
thermodynamic device (CS-1), which in conjunction with a proprietary plasma
processing disposable (CP-2), can produce autologous or homologous fibrin
sealant from an individual donation of plasma at a very low cost and in less
than 60 minutes.
Dr. Godsey continued, "The Company continues to execute its plan to seek
regulatory approval to market the CryoSeal FS System globally and believes the
CryoSeal FS System will allow blood centers around the world to produce, from a
single unit of donated plasma, a low cost, potentially safer alternative to the
commercial fibrin sealants currently being sold which are sourced from pools of
plasma from thousands of paid donors and contain bovine materials." The Company
expects CE mark approval for the CryoSeal FS System first quarter of calendar
year 2001 and expects market launch in countries except the U.S. and Japan, to
occur at that time. Until FDA approval, the CryoSeal FS System will only be
marketed outside of the United States, as permitted under foreign regulations
and U.S. Export Regulations, through the Company`s distributors and partners.
