The first ever Pacific-wide tourism investment conference opened today at sea-side resort in Fiji, with the announcement that a follow-up investment meeting is planned for the region next year.

Patrick Keene, the project manager of the European Union’s ProInvest agency and organisers of the Fiji conference, made the announcement at a regional tourism conference in Nadi.

He says the follow-up meeting would ensure that good tourism projects in the islands are supported.

“At a similar conference we held in the Caribbean last October, it was decided then that we would meet again in May this year,” Mr Keene told journalists covering the conference at the Sheraton Fiji Resort near Nadi International Airport.

“We hope we can do the same thing here in the Pacific in agreement with regional organisations based here.

“We just don’t want it to be a one-shot thing.”

Chief Executive Officer of the Suva-based South Pacific Tourism Organisation, Mr Lisiate ‘Akolo is among Pacific islanders attending the three-day summit. He has welcomed the announcement.

“I think that follow-up conference will be welcomed in the Pacific as following up is very important,” ‘Akolo said. “Usually we in the Pacific lack the know-how on providing proposals that meet EU criteria. So in hosting follow-up meetings, we will benefit enormously from them.”

Some 350 delegates are attending the Fiji investment conference, some 20 per cent of whom are investors from Europe as well as from Australia, New Zealand and Thailand.

Apart from a series of workshops on tourism-related themes planned for the three day, delegates – through a computer-based matching exercise – will hold one-to-one meetings to discuss possible business partnerships.

ProInvest’s sector coordinator Sid Boubekeur estimates that out of these meetings, 15 to 20 projects may materialise, with access to European Bank loans.

“The second Profit (investment conference) in 2006 to be managed by Pacific interests will ensure sustainability in these tourism projects,” said Mr Boubekeur.

Henry Sanday of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat says the Profit in the Pacific conference fits perfectly with the Forum leaders’ Pacific Plan and the region’s EPA (Economic Partnership Agreement) negotiations with the EU. “Our EPA negotiations were also launched here last September and you would recall that our position identified tourism and investment as the two key ingredients to develop Pacific island economies,” he said. “This conference therefore is both timely and relevant.”

Pacific countries represented at the Fiji conference are the Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Niue, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.

Among delegates are two Cabinet Ministers from Vanuatu - Tourism Minister James Bule and Infrastructure & Public Utilities Minister Maxine Carlot Korman…. PNS

¡Vaya que nivel de español! Pero a lo mejor deberiamos volver a hablar aleman, chicos, para que los pringaos que no entienden ni una palabra sigan leyendo... ¿que os parece?

Warum soll man jetzt kaufen wenn die Mine erst in vielleicht 5 Jahren eröffnet wird.

Hm, vielleicht weil sie in 5 Jahren nicht mehr für den Schnäppchenpreis zu haben ist?

Dass mann nur ein paar Lilien abschneiden muss und die Elektrogeneratoren anwirft ist schon sehr naiv und nicht gerade realitätsnah, aber wem erzähle ich dies eigentlich.

Tja, frage ich mich auch... Mach auch noch die Rosen weg, aber lass noch ein paar Vergissmeinnicht stehen bitte.

Aber mal im Ernst, dass das so nicht gemeint war sollte jeder klar denkende Mensch verstanden haben. Die Infrastruktur ist vorhanden und muss nicht komplett neu konstruiert werden, was riesige Kosten- und Zeitvorteile mit sich bringt.
