Cubic, Integrated Defense shares up on contract win
5 Jun 2003, 11:08am ET
NEW YORK, June 5 (Reuters) - Shares of Cubic Corp. (AMEX:CUB) and Integrated Defense Technologies Inc. (NYSE:IDE) climbed on Thursday after the defense contractors beat out a Boeing Co. (NYSE:BA) team for an Air Force contract worth as much as $525 million.
Cubic`s Defense Applications unit in San Diego and Integrated Defense`s Metric Systems group in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, will share work on the P5 combat training system contract, which is expected to be completed in June 2014.
The system uses multi-access data receivers to link airborne and ground element communication systems, allowing Air Force and Navy pilots to receive debriefings on their performance after tactical maneuvers.
"While Cubic and IDT were the incumbents and favorites, David vs. Goliath competitions are never lay-ups and we had grown increasingly concerned when the decision slipped from the planned date of February," wrote Thomas Weisel Partners analyst David Gremmels in a note to clients.
Gremmels also raised his 2003 earnings-per-share estimate on Integrated Defense to $1 from 98 cents.
The Air Force on Wednesday awarded the contract to Cubic`s Defense Applications unit, but Integrated Defense has a 70 percent share of the contract, worth as much as $350 million. The contract will extend as long as 10 years.
Shares of Cubic climbed 8.3 percent, or $1.70 to $22.10 in early trading on the American Stock Exchange, while Integrated Defense was up 3.4 percent, or 44 cents to $13.54 on the New York Stock Exchange. Boeing was up 25 cents, or 0.75 percent, at $33.80 on the NYSE.
In February, Integrated Defense said it hired investment bank Bear Stearns & Co. to advise it on strategic alternatives, a Wall Street catch phrase for companies seeking a possible sale, merger or other material transaction. Integrated Defense went public in February 2002.
