AUO and CMO to start shipping 12.1-inch panel for HP LED-backlight notebook in June, say sources
Rebecca Kuo, Tainan; Esther Lam, DIGITIMES [Wednesday 16 May 2007]
AU Optronics (AUO) and Chi Mei Optoelectronics (CMO) will start shipping 12.1-inch panels for Hewlett-Packard's (HP's) upcoming notebook slated to launch in the third quarter, according to industry sources.
Shipments of the panels in small volume will begin in June and HP will apply the panels for its upcoming LED-backlight notebooks, the sources said, adding that Dell is also likely to roll out LED-backlight notebooks after HP.
Although notebooks with LED backlighting are unlikely to rise as the mainstream backlight solution over cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFL) in large-size LCD applications in 2007, DisplayBank estimates that the ratio of notebooks with LED backlighting will grow rapidly from 4.9% in 2007 to 39.5% in 2010.
Spurred by leading notebook vendors like Dell and HP's extended presence in offering LED-backlight notebooks, panel makers including AUO, CMO, Samsung Electronics, LG Philips, as well as component suppliers including Coretronic, Kenmos Technology and Taiwan Nano Electro-Optical Technology are tapping into related development.
Among Taiwan-based notebook vendors, Asustek Computer is leading rivals over the launch of LED-backlight notebooks. The company introduced its first LED-backlight notebook, U1F, in March. However, this 11.1-inch panel equipped notebook comes with a price tag of over NT$60,000 (US$1,798) making it hard to rise as the mainstream in the near term, industry watchers commented.
Asustek rival Acer will not be absent from the introduction of LED-backlight notebooks. The company claimed it is well prepared and several LED-backlight notebooks may be introduced to the market by 2008.
