KUALA LUMPUR: It is safer in a rare earth plant than trying to cross the street, says a leading authority in strategic rare metals.
Technology Metals Research founding principal Jack Lifton the man who coined the term technology metals said safety in chemical engineering plants, specifically rare earth plants, had improved tremendously over the years.
“You cannot imagine how safety (in the plants) has changed in my lifetime. When I was a chemical engineer for many years, I didn't even like going into my own factory,” he said.
“I've breathed enough solvents to last 10 lifetimes. Today, it is completely different,” he added.
Specialist’s input: Lifton chatting with (from left) Datuk Dr Abdul Aziz S.A. Kadir, Datuk Ir Ahmad Zaidee Laidin, Liang Teck Meng, Prof Ismail Bahari and Datuk Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar during the symposium in Kuala Lumpur Monday.
Citing other rare earth plants in China and one in the United States, he said state-of-the-art technology had been used to build and maintain them.
“The fact is, of all the dangers you might face in life, this is not one of them,” he said at the inaugural International Symposium on Rare Earths here yesterday.
“This is about intelligent people who don't want to be hurt, watching every moment, making sure that nothing leaks or damages,” he added.
Lifton said the Lynas Advanced Materials Plant (Lamp) in Kuantan could generate downstream industries' revenue of up to US$10bil (RM30bil).
He said the plant could also add value to local industries that relied on rare earths such as the automotive industry.
China now produces and exports more than 90% of the world's rare earth supply but Lamp could make Malaysia the second largest producer, providing 20% of the supply.
“Lamp is the largest of its type built outside China. It would be a shame not to utilise it for jobs, tax revenue and training for local chemical engineers,” said Lifton.

http://institut-seltene-erden.org/institut/das-gremium-des-i…
Den kann man z.B. hier hören:
Hi 5v12,
Prof. Dr. Hans Jürgen Bocker is ja echt cool. Wenigstens Unterhaltungswert (AUWEIA!

Palm Oil Imports
1 China 6200
2 India 4900
3 EU-27 4050
http://news.mongabay.com/2008/0709-amazon_palm_oil.html
