‘Lynas fulfilled all the requirements’
PERTH: Western Australian Mines and Petroleum Minister Norman Moore says there is no concern by the Australian government in respect to any operations of Lynas Corporation Ltd as the company has fulfilled all the requirements.
He also voiced his pleasure in the company’s involvement in developing its Mount Weld rare earth project as it has given Western Australia a chance to be a part of the world’s rare earth business.
Moore, who is responsible for initiating the single biggest overhaul of Western Australia’s mining industry’s occupational health and safety system, also assured Malaysians that the level of radioactivity attached to the product from Mount Weld was very low, and that it was not considered as dangerous goods from the point of transport regulations.
“So it can be transported from Mount Weld to Fremantle Port and exported (to Malaysia) from there and does not require the regulatory arrangement that would relate to dangerous goods with such a low level of radioactivity attached to it. So, it meets all the requirements,” he told reporters at his office.

“I must confess I don’t understand the politics of Malaysia at the moment. I understand you are in an election mood and I can understand Green Group seeking to take advantage of the opportunities to promote the green agenda, but I think it is unfortunate that the Australian Green should involve themselves in Malaysian politics, particularly these days, to be exaggerating the circumstances surrounding the project,” he added.
Moore said the mining and transporting of the rare earth products from Mount Weld would be done under strict regulations in Western Australia and processing in Malaysia would be done under Malaysian laws which were rigorous as that of Australia’s.

Further High Grade Rare Earths Results from Mount Weld Drilling
Lynas Corporation Limited (“Lynas”) (ASX:LYC, OTC:LYSDY) is pleased to announce the complete set of assay results have now been received for the extension drilling programme which was completed on the western side of the Central Lanthanide Deposit and the current open pit at Mount Weld in the June quarter. Some early assay results for the southern-most holes were announced in the June 2011 Quarterly Report. This drilling programme is within the area containing Inferred Resources, and is aimed at delineating the REO resource in this area to at least an Indicated status, and to enable Lynas to assess including the western side of the Central Lanthanide Deposit into the mine planning process, thereby upgrading the Reserves of the ore-body. The complete set of assays for all 154 holes and 9,604 metres of drilling have now been received, with outstanding intersections including:

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 7 (Bernama) -- Minister of International Trade and Industry, Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed, said he would get an update soon on Lynas Malaysia Sdn Bhd's progress in complying with the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) 11 recommendations. Mustapa said Lynas was currently at various stages of complying with them. "Lynas will only be given the nod to operate once it fulfils all the recommendations. "I'll be given an update in the next few days. From what I know, they have been able to achieve compliance. "They are at various stages in achieving compliance," he told reporters on the sidelines of a briefing on Malaysia in the Global Competitiveness Report 2011-2012 here today. He said his ministry would ensure that the recommendations were enforced. "It's work in progress. We are making sure that the recommendations are enforced," he said. The government has set up a task force to oversee the implementation of the IAEA's recommendations to improve safety at the plant in Gebeng, Pahang. The committee is jointly chaired by his ministry and the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry, while members come from the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry and Pahang state government. According to reports, the recommendations included technical and safety measures as well as a decommissioning plan for the plant that's nearing completion. Lynas had said it expected to fulfill all the recommendations by year-end and would sell the metal by the beginning of next year. Lynas is a unit of Lynas Corp Ltd, which is listed on the Australian Stock Exchange.
