A brief introduction to Panax Geothermal (sorry for using English).
Management
The two senior executives at Panax are Bertus de Graaf and Kerry Parker. Both are very well known in Australia and each has been responsible for building small exploration companies into large enterprises. Bertus de Graaf was formerly CEO of Geodynamics (ASX.GDY) , Australia's most advanced geothermal company. Kerry Parker was formerly CFO at Arrow Energy (ASX.AOE) now one of Australia's largest energy companies with large scale coal seam gas projects.
Projects
India
India has an enormous need for new electricity generation and very large investments are being made in the sector:
"To sustain 8 percent GDP growth, India must generate 500 megawatts of power weekly over the next 25 years. Planners have determined that the goal cannot be reached through the conventional sources of coal and natural gas plants."
"Today, renewable energy in India is a $600 million market growing at the rate of 15 percent a year. India ranks fifth in the world in renewable energy capacity. The renewable energy target here for 2030 is 200 gigawatts, up from the current 8 gigawatts. That goal will require an estimated $200 billion capital investment."
Panax has two projects in India. In the north of the country in the Puga Valley which has extremely high geothermal gradients (e.g. 200 degrees celsius at 300m - for comparison in Australia we need to drill about 5000m for similar temperatures!)
The Krishna-Godavari project in the east of the country features a conventional "wet" geothermal resource. Both projects have been advanced previously by Indian academic groups and are currently joint venture options with an Indian group called Geosyndicate, which is a commercial arm of the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay.
Central Asia
The Kyrgyzstan project again features very high thermal gradients (approximately 100 degrees/1000m). The project is situated where electricity may be exported to China. The project is a joint venture with an Australian mining company Kentor Gold. Kentor has a lot of experience in the region.
Australia
Australia currently generates almost all of its electricity by coal or gas. The new government has made a commitment to introduce a carbon trading scheme and a renewable energy target. There is a lot of interest in geothermal in the country as we have large resources of "hot rock" geothermal though usually at some depth. A lot of the resources are in remote locations a long way from the transmission grid. The Panax project has the advantage of being located close to the grid. It is also a very advanced project, having been previously drilled and studied by a private company Scopenergy.
Financial
The company has AUD 9-10 million in cash and may realize some more through the sale of some uranium assets. This represents more than half of the market capitalization. There are 110 million shares on issue (plus around 20 million options), with large holdings owned by the directors and vendors of the projects.
