Toronto-Dominion May Buy Some WaMu Assets, Desjardins Says
By Sean B. Pasternak
Sept. 25 (Bloomberg) -- Toronto-Dominion Bank, Canada's second-largest lender, may buy assets of Washington Mutual Inc. in New York if the company is broken up and sold in parts, Desjardins Securities analyst Michael Goldberg said.
``TD could conceivably purchase the metro New York City operations of WaMu without the toxic assets,'' Goldberg wrote today in a note to investors.
Toronto-Dominion, which has about 1,100 branches in U.S. states including New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts, joined JP Morgan Chase & Co. and other potential bidders for Washington Mutual, a person familiar with the matter said this week.
Toronto-Dominion spokesman Simon Townsend declined to comment.
Royal Bank of Canada may buy parts of U.S. regional banks ``that need relief,'' the analyst said in his note. Purchases may include Morgan Keegan & Co. Inc. from Regions Financial Inc. or Robinson Humphrey from SunTrust Banks Inc., he said.
Goldberg also wrote that Canadian bank profits next fiscal year could decline further if provisions for bad loans accelerate. For example, Bank of Montreal could earn C$3 a share in the year ending October 2009 in an ``alternate'' scenario, compared with his base estimate of C$4.80 a share.
