Shares in Hummingbird Resources (LON: HUM) fell as much as 20% to 13.23p on Monday after it halted operations at its Yanfolila gold mine in southern Mali, the company’s only producing mine, on safety concerns.
The miner said unrest and illegal road blockades in the region where the mine is located have dented its ability to safely continue mining at Yanfolila, adding the operation will remain closed until conditions improve. Hummingbird warned the stoppage will affect full-year production, placing it below the bottom end of the 2021 guidance range.
The miner had expected to produce between 100,000 to 110,000 gold ounces from Yanfolila this year.The company said it was difficult to evaluate the full impact of the disruption, adding that it would provide further details as soon as there is more clarity on the situation.“
The government of Mali is aware of the situation and is actively engaged in resolving these disruptions and we anticipate the situation will be short lived,” chief executive Dan Betts said in the statement.
Hummingbird said the current illegal action is from a small minority and not representative of the communities where the company operates.

Hummingbird Resources (AIM:HUM) said Wednesday it sold 56,095 ounces of gold at an average price of US$1,621/oz in H1.
The African miner said 2020 guidance is maintained at 110,000 - 125,000 oz at an ASIC of up to US$995 per oz as previously announced.
The company had $92 million of revenue for the period, up one-third from H1 2019's $67.1 million. The all-in-sustaining-cost was $936/oz
Adjusted EBITDA for the period was $38.9 million.
CEO Dan Betts said the situation in Mali is being monitored.
"The recent political unrest in Mali, while a concern, has not impacted our current operations, which are some 280kms from the capital, however, we are closely monitoring any potential impact it may have on logistics. We have a highly capable security team in country and on site who are keeping our operations, contractors and management teams well informed of on- going developments so as to safeguard our employees, contractors, communities, operations and assets," said Betts.
"The first half of the year was busy in terms of M&A activity. The acquisition of Kouroussa is a significant step forward in our growth strategy to be a multi-asset producer and provides us with the potential to develop another asset into production, which also has significant exploration upside.
Additionally, the earn in agreement with ARX for Dugbe, Liberia will enable us to realise value from the project whilst allowing us to focus on our core business. The recent announcement from Pasofino Gold is a positive development and we look forward to further updating the market with progress at the project."
Betts said the 2020 exploration program is 75% complete and over 12,000 metres of drilling has been completed at the potential underground mine at Komana East, as well as other resource and greenfield exploration programs.
With increase revenue, the company said debt has been significantly reduced.

We think gold operations here are running extremely well currently and expect a strong 1Q result in the coming days (last year on 16th April), most likely the company's strongest quarter yet, likely a positive catalyst. The balance sheet has historically been burdened by high levels of debt but this will turn to net cash around mid-year 2020 for the first time helping reduce investor risk significantly. After this, cash generation for shareholders ramps fast. Management recently reset 2020 guidance and put in place various targets, a 5-year plan, and incentive structure around these including bonuses. Alongside this there have also been recent new share purchases by management during the 1Q, a relatively rare event in recent times and we view this action as a positive signal for Q1 and 2020 as a whole. Annualising Q4 2019 production (it is somewhat seasonal so not necessarily a good extrapolation) of 33,892oz gives 135,568oz production for 2020 which is well ahead of 125,000oz 2020 guidance, giving some comfort it could be exceeded. For 2020 the exploration budget has been significantly expanded and there is a clear focus on wanting to extend the existing mine life which we think will be successful as the year progresses. This is our favorite of the 5 shares discussed here and hence we would make it the largest holding in a weighted basket. We think a doubling of the share price over a year is a realistic goal.
