Rakuten Mobile Commences Radio Frequency Testing for 700 MHz "Platinum Band"

Tokyo, April 30, 2024 – Rakuten Mobile, Japan’s newest and most modern mobile network, today began radio frequency testing for its 700 MHz spectrum, also known as the “platinum band, allocated by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.

Rakuten Mobile is preparing to launch base station operations using the 700 MHz band, drawing on its expertise gained building Japan’s first fully virtualized cloud-native mobile network based on Open RAN standards in the 1.7GHz band. After completing radio frequency testing, the company is aiming for the early roll out of commercial service using the 700 MHz platinum band.

Since the full-scale launch of its mobile carrier service in April 2020, Rakuten Mobile has continued to enhance network quality and coverage through the build-out of 4G and 5G base stations in addition to roaming agreements with its roaming partner. On top of achieving population ratio coverage of 99.9%, the company has consistently been recognized by independent research organizations like Opensignal, a global provider of network experience and market performance insights, who named Rakuten Mobile a leader among Japan’s mobile operators in five network performance categories.

Spectrum in the 700 MHz platinum band offers better indoor building penetration and enables better connectivity indoors and in underground locations. Rakuten Mobile plans to gradually deploy platinum band services using its existing network of base stations, starting with urban areas with a high volume of users and traffic.

Munekatsu Ota, CEO of global travel commerce platform Rakuten Travel Exchange (RTX) and vacation rental model Rakuten Stay (RS), is propelling expansion of the Japanese brand, which means optimism, in South-east Asia and beyond.

What should our readers in the region, outside of Japan, know about RTX and RS?

RTX started as a B2B wholesales business in Singapore four years ago providing hotel, ryokan and vacation rental inventory to more than 1,000 OTA clients in 90 countries, primarily in China, South-east Asia, Australia and the US.

Within the Rakuten ecosystem, RTX serves as a global inventory platform for hotels and vacation rentals, playing a pivotal role in enhancing global transactions for Rakuten Travel (RT).

The primary focus of RTX is to boost inbound and outbound travel and global transactions, supporting RT’s operations in and outside Japan.

RS is a new type of real estate accommodation model featuring large spaces, designed by and owned by Rakuten. It is fully unmanned, using technology, and suitable for groups of between eight and 10 people. The idea was conceptualised during the pandemic lockdown.

There are around 600 RS accommodation and the aim is to grow to 10,000, mainly in Japan, but also in Hawaii, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and other parts of South-east Asia – we are preparing a private fund and inviting investors.

In addition, Rakuten Travel Experiences (RTE) is a concierge service providing sightseeing, exercise, activity and restaurant recommendation content and the next step is to create a seamless RS and RTE connection by next year.

Erste Schätzungen: Rakuten legt Zahlen zum jüngsten Quartal vor

Rakuten wird voraussichtlich am 14.05.2024 die Bücher zum am 31.03.2024 abgelaufenen Jahresviertel öffnen.

In Sachen EPS geht 1 Analyst von einem Verlust von -0,127 USD je Aktie aus. Im vergangenen Jahr hatte Rakuten noch -0,381 USD je Aktie verloren.

Gegenüber dem Vorjahreszeitraum soll Rakuten in dem im März abgelaufenen Quartal Umsatzeinbußen von 3,62 Prozent erzielt haben. Den Umsatz sehen 8 Analysten durchschnittlich bei 3,37 Milliarden USD. Im Vorjahresviertel waren noch 3,49 Milliarden USD in den Büchern gestanden.
Insgesamt erwarten 14 Analysten für das aktuell laufende Fiskaljahr einen durchschnittlichen Verlust von -0,269 USD je Aktie, gegenüber -1,260 USD je Aktie im Vorjahr. Den Jahresumsatz setzen 14 Analysten durchschnittlich auf 14,94 Milliarden USD fest. Im Vorjahr waren noch 14,73 Milliarden USD in den Büchern gestanden.
