Ericsson launches major VDSL2 innovation to accelerate interactive high-definition TV

Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERICY) today launches a completely new out-site plant concept for its High-Performance EDA solution, a fiber-deep broadband access over copper, based on the new VDSL2 standard.

This product represents a tenfold performance improvement over previous generations in the highly innovative Ethernet DSL Access product family.

Network operators worldwide are eager to upgrade their copper networks with capabilities for multiple streams of interactive high-definition TV. Up until now, the main barrier has been the cost and technology associated to bring DSL into the out-site plant.

Ericsson has changed that by introducing a completely new site solution concept for operators that want to deploy VDSL2 in Fiber-to-the-Neighbourhood/Curb applications.
This out-site plant solution reduces a number of non-equipment related overhead costs, through the introduction of a new type of VDSL2 product that is optimized for the lowest possible cost per site.

Martin Mellor, vice president of Product Area Broadband Access, Ericsson, says: "The transition from ADSL2plus to VDSL2 requires a tenfold improvement in product performance, but short time to market has been achieved thanks to software development conducted by Ericsson's design organization during the last four years."

But far more important is the ability to reduce the total cost of deployment when DSL is brought closer to the customers and to access nodes located in street-side cabinets. The reduction of the copper loop length helps provide the capacity required for multiple simultaneous HDTV channels to consumers, and to provide high-speed business access in areas without fiber all the way to user premises.

Mellor says: "By focusing on a holistic out-site plant offering, we can reduce the cost and complexity to a very attractive level for operators to consider an accelerated introduction of high-definition TV capable access networks."

Ericsson's new product line for VDSL2 access builds on the experiences gained since 2002 with the Ethernet DSL Access deployments, and represents a mature approach for embracing end-to-end broadband according to the new TR-101 architectures.

Ericsson's VDSL2 equipment has been going through evaluations in the field since 2005 and is now ready to be brought forward into commercial deployments, as the VDSL2 standard is reaching maturity and becomes interoperable.

Ericsson is shaping the future of mobile and high-performance broadband through its continuous technology leadership. Providing innovative solutions in more than 140 countries, Ericsson is helping to create the most powerful communication companies in the world.

      About Ericsson's Ethernet DSL access
Ericsson's industry-leading EDA solution has been supporting high-bandwidth-demanding services, with advanced quality-assurance mechanisms for demanding video applications since 2002. As the most scalable IP-DSLAM solution on the market, Ericsson EDA lets operators develop their businesses beyond basic IP connectivity, ensuring the ability to offer Triple Play services to home and office environments in a way that is cost efficient and future proof. Ericsson EDA is the most widely deployed IP-DSLAM solution globally, with more than 90 networks deployed worldwide. The introduction of a solution with the performance increased tenfold, alongside the addition of new capabilities, make it the best solution available for VDSL2 deployments in the out-site plant.

      About the VDSL2 standard
VDSL2 is a new standard defined by ITU-T as G993.2. VDSL2 combines the capabilities of VDSL1 and ADSL2plus, and is available in a number of profilers for different access applications. VDSL2 can deliver support up to 100Mbps symmetrical services over standard copper loops. One of the most important aspects of the VDSL2 standard is that it uses Ethernet as multiplexing technology in the first mile. The elimination of ATM in the first mile means that the access architecture can be simplified into an end-to-end Ethernet access architecture that uses VLANs as the service-delivery mechanism across the entire access network. VDSL2 is backward compatible with previous ADSL generations. Ericsson is actively participating in the industry efforts to make VDSL2 and interoperable standards as quickly as possible.

      About the TR-101 architecture
DSL Forum has recently published Technical Report 101, which outlines how Ethernet can be introduced in the aggregation part of broadband network architectures. Standardized service quality mechanisms are enablers for distribution of broadband services beyond best-effort internet connectivity in a multivendor environment. Ericsson has been an active contributor to the creation of the TR-101 specifications.

This joint demonstration at GLOBALCOMM will show how this combination of technologies empowers end users to use their mobile phones to communicate with their home environment.

At the demonstration, users will be able to wirelessly view digital photos stored in their mobile phones on a living room TV, to use a home gateway for instant messaging between mobile phones outside the home and a living room TV, and be able to access the content stored on their home PC via mobile phones.

Claes Ödman, Vice President, Multimedia Solutions, Ericsson, says: "Ericsson sees this demonstration with Sony as a precursor to a powerful new world of personalized and interactive TV. This illustrates the potential for enriched communication services, gained by combining IMS and DLNA technologies."

Keiji Kimura, Executive Vice President, Officer in charge of Technology Strategies, Sony Corporation, says: "We are very pleased to have this opportunity to demonstrate our technological collaboration with Ericsson. This shows the potential power of combining two crucial open standards, giving rise to new digital entertainment and communication applications."

The evolving IPTV service has end user advantages over digital broadcast TV services in terms of interactivity and personalization. The combination of IPTV and DLNA-based technologies offers an integration of content and communication services, as well as converged services across mobile terminals and home devices.

Westerburg, 2.

Ericsson agrees to sell its defense business to Saab

Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERICY) agrees to sell its defense business, Ericsson Microwave Systems AB, and its 40 percent holding in Saab Ericsson Space to Saab.
Ericsson will retain the National Security and Public Safety business.
The purchase price is SEK 3.8 b. in cash.
The agreement involves transfer of approximately 1,250 employees.
The transaction is expected to close in September 2006.

Ericsson Microwave Systems (EMW) is a leading provider of radar, command and control systems for defense applications. In the product portfolio are e.g. the weapon locating system Arthur, the air surveillance system Giraffe and the operational airborne surveillance system Erieye.

The Ericsson defense business, that Saab is acquiring, had sales of approximately SEK 2 b. in 2005 with good profitability. In addition to the National Security and Public Safety business, Ericsson will retain parts of the Power Systems business. The retained units employ around 300 individuals.

Saab is one of the world's leading high-tech companies, with its main operations in defense, aviation, space and civil security. In 2005, total annual sales amou nted to SEK 19 b.

Carl-Henric Svanberg, President and CEO, Ericsson, says: "We are very pleased with this agreement since it gives EMW and its employees good possibilities to expand growth through Saab's strong market presence. Also, the EMW employees will now belong to a company with this area as a core business."

A long period of co-operation and a strong future combination
Saab and EMW have co-operated closely for a number of years. The co-operation has included Erieye and JAS 39 Gripen. The integration of EMW's advanced radar and sensor systems creates new and long-term business opportunities for Saab.

Svanberg says: "The advanced radar development focusing on defense customers has today less synergies with Ericsson's core business. As a result of the a greement, we will strengthen our focus on telecommunications. We are also very confident about the future prospects for the National Security and Public Safety area, which will remain within Ericsson, where the development has just recently started to take off."

Åke Svensson, CEO, Saab Group, says: "We are delighted to welcome EMW's very talented employees to Saab. EMW makes a perfect fit into our business and we foresee good growth opportunities going forward for the strong combined product offering."

Furthermore, Ericsson and Saab intend to evaluate opportunities for a future co-operation between the two companies, within the area of National Security and Public Safety where the companies' relative strengths are complementary.

      Financial impacts
The results of EMW are currently reported within Other Operations, after the transaction, the results of the retained activities will instead be reported as part of the Systems Segment.

The expected capital gain of approximately SEK 3 b. is of similar magnitude as the previously announced restructuring costs, mainly related to the Marconi acquisition and the Career Change Offer in Sweden, giving a neutral effect on Ericsson's income after financial items for 2006.

      Other
The agreement also includes Ericsson's 20 percent ownership in the IG JAS consortia, Ericsson's shares in the joint ventures Thales EAW Systems and Ericsson Saab Surveillance Systems AB. Saab will also take over Ericsson's ownership in Saab Ericsson Space AB.

The agreement is subject to approvals from relevant competition and defense authorities.

Ericsson is shaping the future of Mobile and Broadband Internet communications through its continuous technology leadership. Providing innovative solutions in more than 140 countries, Ericsson is helping to create the most powerful communication companies in the world.

Ericsson's Mobile TV solution selected by Celcom

In an effort to further enhance its 3G services offerings, Celcom (Malaysia) Berhad has awarded Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERICY) a contract to provide Ericsson Mobile TV and Video solutions.

Ericsson will supply and integrate Ericsson's convergent streaming solution, which will provide Celcom with a single platform for packet and circuit switched mobile TV.

The channel selector will allow the mobile phone to be easily used as an interactive remote control for quick surfing between channels by just pushing the numbers on the key pad. It functions in a manner similar to a traditional television remote control, providing the users with a TV-like experience - selecting between a range of TV programs on their mobile.

With this solution in place, Celcom will be prepared to offer interactive mobile TV service that will enable its customers to interact with a show that they are watching on their mobile phone. Celcom's customers will be able to vote, chat and communicate with a television presenter while watching their favorite show - all at the same time from their mobile phones.

Another service made possible with the deployment of this solution is 3G Pocketsports, which uses advanced sports video streaming technology to allow customers to view or share sports-related video through video extraction and video highlight.

Jan Signell, President of Ericsson South East Asia and Country Manager of Ericsson Malaysia, says: "We are pleased that Celcom has chosen our Mobile TV solutions as part of its 3G offerings and we look forward to supporting them in delivering services that will enrich the mobile lifestyles of their customers."

Ericsson provides operators with a true end-to-end solution that utilizes the WCDMA and GSM/EDGE mobile networks for commercial mobile TV and video services. Today, existing 3G mobile technology enables service providers to launch high-quality and cost-efficient mobile TV services.

By the end of 2005, more than 40 operators had commercially launched mobile TV over mobile networks via unicast. As mobile TV becomes a mass-market service, mobile network broadcast technologies, such as MBMS (Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Services) will be added to mobile networks to further boost capacity.

Ericsson is shaping the future of Mobile and Broadband Internet communications through its continuous technology leadership. Providing innovative solutions in more than 140 countries, Ericsson is helping to create the most powerful communication companies in the world.

Ericsson Expander site solutions help cut rollout costs by at least 30 percent

Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERICY) has introduced new radio network site and transmission solutions for its Ericsson Expander offering that will help mobile operators to serve low-spending users profitably by cutting capex and opex by 30 percent or more in new coverage areas.

The enhanced Ericsson Expander solutions not only improve radio network performance - so that areas can be served by up to 50 percent fewer radio sites - but also address other major cost areas, such as power consumption, transmission, and network rollout.

The new Expander site and transmission solutions offer total site solutions including preconfigured radio base stations, antennas, power and installation systems, transmission solutions, and services. These reduce site, transmission, and network rollout costs, maximize radio performance, and speed up network rollout, while maintaining reliability.

Ulf Ewaldsson, Ericsson's vice president Product Management GSM RAN, says: "With these new solutions, we are not only exploiting our technology leadership to make step-wise changes in radio network performance, we are also making use of our experience in network rollout to address 'softer' issues that influence operators' total cost of ownership. We're making it possible for operators to open up the world of mobile communications for people in rural areas or those with low disposable incomes."

Jan Signell, president of Ericsson South East Asia, believes these solutions will be well received in countries such as China, India, Indonesia, and Bangladesh, where there will be tremendous growth in the number of new mobile users in the next five years. "As penetration grows, the lower-spending segment of the population becomes increasingly important. This is why we are focusing on cost-optimized solutions to help our customers grow this segment in a profitable way," Signell says.

"Seeing that this is one of the major challenges for our customers in this region, we have made cost-optimized solutions a key focus area. We are also looking at ways to leverage our strong regional presence and economies of scale to further lower costs. One step we are taking is reducing the cost of materials and build, which represents a significant percentage of total cost of ownership."

Key to achieving low total cost of ownership with the new Expander site solutions is Ericsson's latest GSM radio and microwave transmission products. These include: new antenna systems, such as Ericsson's unique modular high-gain antennas (MHGA) that provide even wider coverage; the new GSM radio base station 2x16, which improves radio performance and reduces power consumption by 20-30 percent; and the Macro Main Remote RBS 2108/2111 base stations, which provide low-cost entry solutions and fill in coverage in areas such as villages or hilly terrain where providing wide-area coverage with few sites is difficult. These solutions simplify site location and significantly reduce network rollout time.

The Ericsson microwave portfolio fully supports Expander's wide-area coverage solutions. It offers great flexibility in the choice of site location, and reduces civil works significantly when compared to copper or fiber-based transmission. The MINI-LINK TN solution enables very cost-efficient transmission networks to be built, resulting in up to 25 percent capex savings, thanks to its modern architecture designed to reduce site costs. In addition, the system cuts opex through reduced power consumption, simplified installation, enhanced reliability, and improved network management capabilities, with remote capacity upgrades and improved scalability.

Overall, Expander's optimized and preconfigured site solutions and rollout services significantly reduce total cost of ownership and cut time to market for operators, while providing a high-quality platform for future growth and development.

Ericsson is shaping the future of Mobile and Broadband Internet communications through its continuous technology leadership. Providing innovative solutions in more than 140 countries, Ericsson is helping to create the most powerful communication companies in the world.

      Ericsson acknowledges GSM's 15th anniversary

On July 1, it is 15 years since the world's first commercial Global System for Mobile communication (GSM) call was made. The network was delivered by Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERICY) and operated by Mannesmann in Germany.

Since then, GSM has revolutionized the way the world communicates. Today approximately every third person on the globe has a GSM phone in their pocket - the 2 billion GSM subscriber milestone was passed in June - equating to 80 percent of all mobile users in the world.

No other communication technology has had such a significant impact - in terms of users, GSM has surpassed the internet, personal computers and fixed telephone users.

Jan Uddenfeldt, Senior Vice President, Technology Strategy, Ericsson, says: "GSM has grown constantly during its 15 years of commercial life. In the past 10 years this growth has been exponential and I am proud to be able to say that Ericsson has been instrumental in the development of this technology.

"Looking to the future, evolved GSM technology, such as 3G, could double internet usage within a few years. In emerging markets especially, 3G technology is often the only way to reach the information available on internet - this is one way Ericsson supports its vision of being the prime driver in an all-communicating world."

Later this year, Ericsson will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the mobile phone.

SingTel selects Ericsson for ultra-high speed broadband trial in Singapore

Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERICY), will deliver an ultra-high speed fixed broadband trial network to SingTel. Based on Ericsson's EDA VDSL2 (Ethernet DSL Access Very-High-Bit Rate Digital Subscriber Line 2) broadband technology, the trial network will enable SingTel to deliver ultra-high speed broadband services deployed over existing copper lines.

This will make SingTel the first operator in South East Asia to deploy VDSL2 broadband technology in its network, providing access speed of up to 100 Mbps on copper, powered by Ericsson's VDSL2 equipment and solutions.

VDSL2, the most advanced standard of xDSL broadband wireline communications, will benefit operators with large-scale deployment of triple play services (voice, video and data) as it has inherent features enabling optimal user experiences for broadband services. Ericsson's ADSL fallback functionality also enables the re-use of existing Customer Premises Equipment (CPE), resulting in cost savings.

Tan Kah Rhu, Vice President, Core Engineering, SingTel, says: "SingTel, as the technology leader in broadband, is constantly on the lookout for new technologies that will enhance our customers' broadband experience. About VDSL2
Within the VDSL2 standard, features such as dual latency enable quality to be built into the network in all layers, which will be needed to handle all aspects of providing upcoming services such as IPTV (Internet Protocol Television). Ericsson is actively participating in the industry efforts to make VDSL2 fully interoperable as quickly as possible.

The consolidated financial summary for Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB (Sony Ericsson) for the second quarter ended June 30, 2006 is as follows:

      Q2 2005 Q1 2006 Q2 2006
Number of units shipped (million) 11.8 13.3 15.7
      Sales (EURO m.) 1,614 1,992 2,272
      Income before taxes (EURO m.) 87 151 211
      Net income (EURO m.) 75 109 143

Units shipped in the quarter reached 15.7 million, a 33% increase compared to the same period last year, and generated an increase in market share both on a year-on-year and sequential basis. Sales for the quarter were Euro 2,272 million, representing a year-on-year increase of 41%. Income before taxes was Euro 211 million representing a year-on-year increase of 143%. Net income was Euro 143 million.

Sony Ericsson continued the momentum of the first quarter by shipping three new Walkman® branded phones, the W300, W700 and W42S as well as announcing two new stylish Walkman models: the W850, a tri-band/UMTS slider phone, and the quad-band EDGE W710, the first sports Walkman® with pedometer and jogging applications. The quad-band EDGE W810 Walkman® phone, a follow-up to the popular W800, became a big success during the quarter and continued to build the company's position as a leader in mobile music. This was further enhanced by the shipment of the W42S for KDDI, the first Walkman® branded phone for the Japanese market.

Following the successful introduction of the Walkman® brand to the mobile phone market last year, the company started shipping the K800, Sony Ericsson's first Cyber-shot(TM) branded 3.2 Megapixel camera phone, bringing an instantly recognisable Sony camera brand to its high-tier imaging products. In Japan, Sony Ericsson increased its line up of FOMA(TM) phones for NTT DoCoMo to three, with the shipment of the SO702i and SO902iWP+.

"The second quarter has seen Sony Ericsson both announce and start to ship a wide variety of products confirming the company's ability to compete, capture market share and profitably grow the business. With a product line-up that includes a broad range of both basic and feature phones, Sony Ericsson is now in a position to broaden its customer base in all market regions and customer segments," said Miles Flint, President of Sony Ericsson.

R&D investment continued to increase to support further expansion of the portfolio in 2007 and marketing expenditure also increased as new products, such as the K610, K800 and the eagerly awaited M600 Symbian OS messaging phone entered the market towards the end of the quarter. Average Selling Price (ASP) declined slightly sequentially, due to a greater proportion of low-priced models, such as the J100, J220 and J230 shipping in volume.

Growth in the global handset market continued to outpace expectations, and Sony Ericsson now forecasts the global market outlook for 2006 to be above 950 million units, up from the previous estimate of "above 900 million units".

FOMA is a trademark of NTT DoCoMo, Inc. in Japan and other countries.

NTT DoCoMo's FOMA service is only available to subscribers in Japan.

WALKMAN® and Cyber-shot(TM) are trademarks or registered trademarks of Sony Corporation.
