Freedomland: Making the Internet available to all with the
      Netgem Solution

Ever since the Internet revolution hit Europe, one factor has slowed its
phenomenal growth: computer and access costs for average users. Some
consumers balk at spending the money to buy a computer and get on line.
This has been especially true for parts of southern Europe, where the
number of Internet-connected households still lags behind the rest of the
      continent.

      But for Freedomland-ITN (Internet Television
Network), an Italian firm, this situation represents
an historic opportunity. Starting in April, 1999,
Freedomland has been offering subscribers a
unique solution that it calculates will boost
Internet use and put the company at the forefront of the hotly-disputed ISP
      market.

Freedomland`s approach centers on the Netgem netbox, a set-top box that
provides full Internet functionality over TV. For subscribers, the advantage is
obvious: there is no need to buy a computer and rates are kept affordably
low. In Italy, they amount to 30,000 Italian liras (15.50 Euros) * per month.
And even that reasonable rate plunges to one half, or 15,000 liras monthly
(7.75 Euros) * if the subscriber opens a Web@bank account offered by the
Banca Popolare di Milano, one of Freedomland`s partners.

In addition to circumventing the need for computer equipment, the
Freedomland-ITN service also provides subscribers with services not
normally available with a personal computer. The innovative Netgem device
thus makes it possible for users to browse the Internet while watching
      regular television programmes.

Freedomland`s venture has taken a healthy flying start. Some 80,000 * of
the set-top boxes pioneered by Netgem have already been shipped in the
Italian firm`s initial merchandising zone-Italy and Spain. The success is no
accident. It results from careful planning. Freedomland`s ambition is simple:
to provide Internet access to all homes, no matter how modest.

The simplicity of Freedomland`s business model underscores its appeal.
Subscribers receive - free of charge - the set-top box which is connected to
the TV much like a video recorder, as well as to the telephone network.
With each access, subscribers are automatically taken to the Freedomland
portal, a parameter that cannot be changed.

This portal offers wide-ranging services including news, on-line auctions,
private sales and remote training. Users also benefit from a text and voice
      e-mail service. Furthermore, Freedomland`s own on-line community - known
as Galassia - offers a direct chat service, forums and games.

Freedomland forecasts sales of 140 billion Italian liras for 2000 (more than
72 million Euros) and 246 billion liras (127 million Euros) in 2001. These
results are based on a total investment outlay of some 250 billion liras (129
      million Euros).

By 2001, the access provider estimates it will have signed up 500,000
subscribers in five nations. In the context of its international development,
the Italian company has already begun its European expansion in Spain,
where operations are under way. In future months, the company will begin
offering its service in Britain, Germany and France.

The access provider`s ambitions are decidedly goal-oriented: it aspires quite
simply to become the leader for Internet over the television.
