US$.
The company’s products include blue, green and ultraviolet (UV) light emitting diodes (LEDs), near UV lasers, radio frequency (RF) and microwave devices, power switching devices and SiC wafers sold for production and for use in research and development. Targeted applications for these products include solid state illumination, optical storage, wireless infrastructure and power switching.
US$ (641 Mio. Gewinn).

Naja, MK derzeit knapp 1.5 Mrd.

@blockmalz,

@5: hier etwas aktuelles bzgl. Helligkeit von weissen LED´s:
"Lumileds setzt neuen Maßstab"
"Weißlicht-LED schafft 130 lm"

We designed a screen to identify fast-growing companies in this index that are also reasonably priced. Our key metric: the price-to-earnings-growth ratio, or PEG. In the numerator of the PEG is the expected price-to-earnings multiple, here calculated using next 12-month-earnings estimates. The denominator is the integer representing the rate of annualized earnings growth projected by analysts over the coming three to five years.
If you find a PEG ratio below 1, you may have come across a potential bargain, in that the company looks inexpensive relative to Wall Street`s growth forecasts. We looked for PEGs below 0.9 and narrowed the field further by requiring that current multiples of price to cash flow (net income plus depreciation) stand below their five-year averages.
These companies also carry long-term debt representing less than half of their total capital and have posted annual sales growth better than 5% over the five years, as well as positive free cash flow (net income plus depreciation less capital expenditures) on a trailing 12-month basis.

Many companies have announced recent progress in their blue laser development program. What progress has Cree made in this area?
Cree was the first U.S.-based company to publicly announce demonstration of a nitride-based continuous wave blue laser diode. We believe that SiC substrates have key advantages over competing substrate materials for nitride-based laser diodes including a closer match in lattice constant and thermal expansion coefficient to the nitride materials, as well as a natural cleave plane. These attributes will be important in Cree`s efforts to produce a commercially viable product. Our research and development efforts with our high performance LEDs have been beneficial to our laser program. Cree recently aligned with Microvision, Inc. to aggressively expand development efforts of blue and green lasers utilizing SiC and gallium nitride materials. Microvision is funding Cree $2.6 million for laser development with an option, by Microvision, for an additional year period that could provide another $2.5 million in funding. Our researchers have been making considerable advances in this area, and we expect to see significant progress during the next fiscal year.

"Cree Reports Financial Results For The Third Quarter of Fiscal Year 2005
Revenue of $96.7 Million
Earnings Per Share of $0.27
Durham, NC, April 14, 2005 – Cree, Inc. (Nasdaq: CREE) today announced revenue of $96,710,000 for the third quarter of fiscal 2005 which ended on March 27, 2005, representing a 25 percent increase over the Company’s comparable year ago period revenue of $77,223,000. Net income for the third quarter increased 37 percent to $20,683,000, or $0.27 per share, compared to $15,089,000, or $0.20 per share, as reported for the third quarter of fiscal 2004. Gross margin for the third quarter of fiscal 2005 was 53 percent of revenue and compares to 49 percent in the prior year period and 50 percent in the second quarter of fiscal 2005.
During the third quarter of fiscal 2005, net income included approximately $25,000 of net adjustments for changes in estimates to the Company’s sales return provision to better reflect product return history and tax adjustments that did not change reported earnings per share. The adjustments included a $1.2 million after-tax benefit to gross profit related to the change recorded to the Company’s sales return provision which increased third quarter gross margin by two percentage points. The sales return provision benefit was mostly offset by non-operating adjustments, which negatively impacted net income by $1.2 million. The non-operating adjustments were related primarily to tax adjustments associated with the decline in the value of the Company’s marketable securities and offset partly by a gain on the sale of a portion of these securities.
For the nine-month period ended March 27, 2005, Cree reported revenue of $290,181,000, an increase of 34 percent over the $216,497,000 reported for the comparable period in fiscal year 2004. Net income for the nine-month period rose 90 percent to $70,132,000, or $0.91 per share, compared to $36,975,000, or $0.49 per share, in the year ago period.
“The fact that our LED business grew sequentially in what is normally a seasonally down quarter for the industry is a testament to the strength of our product offering,” stated Chuck Swoboda, Cree President and CEO. “As we enter the final quarter of our fiscal year, I believe that we are in a favorable competitive position. Based on current orders and customer forecasts, we are optimistic that our revenue should grow sequentially in the fourth quarter.”
Today the Company also announced that as part of its ongoing stock buyback program, it had repurchased 1.45 million shares in the third quarter at an average price of $24.32.
Business Outlook:
For its fourth quarter of fiscal 2005, Cree currently targets revenue in a range of $98 to $102 million with earnings of $0.25 to $0.28 per share."

Cree (CREE) recently announced a licensing deal with several other chip manufacturers, allowing them to build and sell white LEDs using Cree`s high-brightness LED technology. I see these deals as a very positive shift in Cree`s strategy, as well as demonstrating that there is growing demand in the high-brightness LED market.
Cree`s strengths have always been research and development, not manufacturing. If this announcement means a shift toward emphasizing intellectual property licensing instead of go-it-alone trail blazing, then Cree is an even more attractive investment today than last week.
The recent licensing deal follows up Cree`s announcement back in February of a cross-licensing agreement with Nichia for a number of patents held by both companies. (Nichia holds a patent on the manufacturing process for blue LEDs that is more efficient than Cree`s process.) The deal combined Cree`s innovation with Nichia`s manufacturing efficiency.
The manufacturers announced in the most recent licensing agreement include: Stanley Electric, Rohm, and Cotco Holdings. All three are major manufacturers, with Stanley and Rohm`s production facilities based in Japan, while Cotco is based in Hong Kong.
Strategically, these deals amount to an outsourcing manufacturing capacity without having any capital outlay. If the market for white LEDs takes off . . ., these manufacturing licenses will give Cree a very leveraged business model.
And a leveraged business model is what you want . . . -- high margins and low fixed costs gush earnings and cash flow when a transformational new technology hits mass market stage.
The potential for white LEDs is enormous, with possible
applications that include:
* Backlighting for large screen LCD TVs using
high-brightness white LEDs as the backlight.
* Large screen TVs using high-brightness LEDs of all
colors, including white, red, green and blue.
* Solid-state illumination, providing ordinary white light
for applications where fluorescent and incandescent light
bulbs are currently used.
* Public signaling and signs, including traffic lights,
railroad crossings, roadway intersections, advertising
signs for businesses, etc.
LEDs are useful in these applications because of the greater efficiency offered by the technology. LEDs have lower power requirements with greater efficiency, primarily meaning less heat because less power is used, and used more efficiently, LEDs have a longer lifespan and thus provide much lower maintenance costs.
The U.S. Energy Administration figures that IF we replaced
Edison`s light bulbs with Cree`s white LEDs, the U.S. could cut its energy consumption by 19% -- yes, 19%!
Considering where we stand in the world`s energy consumption statistics (5% of the world`s population, consuming 25% of the world`s energy), I believe white light LEDs will become an economic imperative.

Cree inks new deal with top-five customer
Wednesday June 29, 3:01 pm ET
Cree Inc. has forged a new, three-year agreement to sell its light emitting diodes to Osram Opto Semiconductors GmbH, one of the Durham-based firm`s top five customers.
The agreement, announced Wednesday, covers Cree`s entire LED product line, including standard, mid-bright and XBright LED families. Cynthia Merrell, Cree`s chief financial officer, declined to release financial terms of the deal, announced Wednesday, or the amount of chips involved.

LEDs are semiconductors used to light everything from automobile dashboards to digital camera flashes.
Osram Opto Semiconductors is a Germany-based LED packager. Essentially, it takes Cree`s semiconductors and uses them in other products, such as cell phones and outdoor displays, according to Merrell.
Sales to Osram Opto Semiconductors accounted for about 13 percent of Cree`s revenue in the 2004 fiscal year, Merrell says.
A previous deal between the companies was set to expire this month and Cree made the announcement Wednesday so investors would know that a new deal was in place. The new agreement between Cree (Nasdaq: CREE - News) and Osram Opto Semiconductors will expire in June 2008

Cree Reports Record Revenue and Earnings for Fiscal Year 2005
Fourth Quarter Sales Highest in Company History
DURHAM, N.C., Aug. 11 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Cree, Inc. (Nasdaq: CREE) today announced revenue for its fiscal 2005 of $389,064,000, representing a 27 percent increase over the $307,359,000 reported for the year ended June 27, 2004. Gross margin increased from 47 percent to 52 percent of revenue year- over-year and operating profit increased 51 percent to $119,868,000, or 31% of revenue, as compared to $79,349,000, or 26% of revenue, in fiscal 2004. Net income for the year rose 57 percent to $91,143,000, or $1.18 per share, compared to $57,960,000, or $0.77 per share, in fiscal 2004. For fiscal 2005, cash flow from operations was also a record at $175,579,000.
For the fourth quarter of fiscal 2005, Cree reported revenue of $98,883,000, an increase of 9% over the $90,862,000 reported in the comparable prior year period. Gross margin was 51 percent of revenue for both the fourth quarter of fiscal 2005 and 2004. Operating profit was 25 percent of revenue for the three-month period ended June 26, 2005 and included approximately $6.7 million in write-downs and expenses for the planned closure of the Cree Microwave California facility. Net income for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2005 was $21,010,000, or $0.27 per share, compared to $20,985,000, or $0.28 per share, as reported for the corresponding period in the prior year. The $6.7 million in pre-tax charges for the planned closure of Cree Microwave`s California facility, or $4.6 million after tax were partly offset by favorable tax adjustments of $2.9 million that resulted from a tax benefit associated with the company`s investment in a public company and other tax adjustments. As a result, net income was reduced by $1.7 million, or $0.02 per share, for these adjustments during the three-month period ended June 26, 2005.
"We are delighted to report that Cree again delivered record revenue and earnings during fiscal 2005," stated Chuck Swoboda, Cree Chairman and CEO. "On top of finishing the year with our best quarter ever for revenue, recent sales data suggests that Cree`s revenue grew faster than our top competitors in both Japan and Taiwan during the year. By continuing to introduce new products with industry-leading performance, Cree is positioned to capitalize on the excellent opportunities for growth in front of us. With over 85 percent of our Q1 sales target already booked, we believe the company is positioned for a strong start for fiscal year 2006."
Business Outlook:
For its first quarter of fiscal 2006, Cree currently targets revenue in a range of $101 million to $104 million with earnings of $0.22 to $0.24 per share, including $0.04 per share for our estimates for the cost of expensing of stock options and other equity compensation and $0.01 per share for severance costs associated with the wind down of Cree Microwave.

Wall Street analysts, on average, expected a profit of 27 cents a share on revenue of $100.6 million for the quarter, according to a Thomson First Call survey.
Shortly after the company issued its results, Cree said Chief Financial Officer Cynthia Merrell had resigned.
In a statement, Merrell, who served as the company`s CFO and treasurer since 1998, said she decided to leave the company "due to the changes in the public corporate environment in recent years and my desire to spend more time with my family."
Merrell will remain with the company, which makes light-emitting diodes for dashboard lights, market tickers and video screens, among other products, until her successor is named. The outgoing CFO will assist in the company`s transition to a new finance chief, but will leave by mid-February.
Analyst Hans Mosesmann at Moors & Cabot Capital Markets said the timing of Merrell`s resignation "is not ideal."
In a note to clients, he reiterated his advice to sell the stock, cutting his target price to $17 from $20 previously.
Further adding to depressed sentiment surrounding the company, Cree issued a sales forecast for the current quarter that fell short of some analysts` hopes.
Cree predicted a fiscal first-quarter profit of 22 cents to 24 cents a share, excluding charges totaling 5 cents a share for stock-option and severance costs. The company, whose LEDs light a giant video screen in New York`s Times Square, pegged revenue at $101 million to $104 million for the quarter.
Analysts, on average, had expected earnings of 29 cents a share on revenue of $106.6 million.
Cree shares crumble as CFO quits
Company`s outlook also disappoints
By Michael Paige, MarketWatch
Last Update: 4:29 PM ET Aug. 12, 2005
LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) -- Shares of Cree Inc. tumbled 13% Friday as investors digested news that the company`s chief financial officer resigned as well as a disappointing financial outlook.
Shares of the Durham, N.C.-based semiconductor materials and devices company (CREE: news, chart, profile) closed down $3.64, or 13%, at $23.70 on heavy volume of 9.7 million shares.
Shares have ranged from $20.68 to $42.44 over the last 52 weeks and had an average daily volume of 1.7 million over the last 10 trading sessions.

Gibt es Calls als Cree?
Gibt es Calls als Cree?
Hier eine Meinung von Tobin Smith (ChangeWave, 30.000 US-Abonnennten) zu CREE (13.8.):
"CREE INC. (CREE)
The situation at Cree is very similar to Alvarion -- we are
investing a year or two AHEAD of the huge transformational wave to
LED white lights (and the gradual replacement of 100-year-old
incandescent bulbs).
One day your grandkids will ask you, "What`s a light bulb?"
Cree reported fiscal fourth-quarter net income of $21 million, or
27 cents a share, compared with year-ago net income of $20.9
million, or 28 cents a share. Quarterly net income was reduced by
2 cents due to charges from the closure of its microwave facility
in California and other items. Profit was flat in its fiscal
fourth quarter despite higher sales, and the company predicted
first-quarter results that just barely met Wall Street estimates,
causing shares to fall 7.5%.
The lumpy earnings that seem to come every other quarter MUST be
used to start or add to a position in CREE. This is how we will
make the most profit when white LEDs take off.
Cree also announced that Cynthia B. Merrell, the company`s CFO and
Treasurer since 1998, has submitted her resignation to the
company. The resignation will be effective when a successor CFO
takes office, but not later than mid-February 2006. Merrell has
agreed to assist in the transition to a new CFO."

LED light bulbs to hit the mainstream in 2010, says iSuppli
Press release; Emily Chuang, DigiTimes.com [Thursday 25 August 2005]
How many years does it take to replace a light bulb? The answer is 131, because that is the number of years that will have elapsed from the time of Thomas Edison’s invention of the light bulb in 1879 until LEDs achieve significant use in general-illumination applications in 2010, according to iSuppli.
Driven by the rising availability of new high-brightness LED (HB-LED) and UHB (ultra-high brightness) products, LEDs are beginning to find limited use in general-illumination applications now dominated by incandescent and fluorescent light bulbs. iSuppli defines general illumination as the interior and exterior lighting of homes, enterprises and public venues.
However, at costs at least two orders of magnitude higher than traditional light sources, HB and UHB LEDs presently are far too expensive to achieve widespread use in general illumination.
But with the arrival of companies dedicated to commercializing HB and UHB LED technology, this situation is changing, iSuppli believes.
For most highest-brightness LEDs, upfront costs are too high and brightness is too low to compete effectively with traditional light sources, said Jagdish Rebello, Ph.D. principal analyst for iSuppli. But companies like Lumileds, Nichia and Osram are continuing to advance the capabilities of HB-LEDs, making them more suitable for use in general illumination.
The market for LEDs for general illumination applications will expand to US$875 million in 2010, rising at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 52.3 percent from US$94 million in 2004, iSuppli predicts. By 2010, LEDs will have grown to account for a significant portion of the worldwide general illumination market, which amounted to $12 billion in 2004.
While LEDs will not aggressively penetrate the home and general illumination markets before 2010, clearly the future of most lighting applications belongs to LEDs, Rebello said.
http://www.digitimes.com/NewsShow/20050825PR202_files/image0…
The bulk of LEDs used for general illumination will be UHB parts, although some HB devices will be employed as well. While the long-term outlook for the LED market is bright, sales growth is decelerating in 2005 as existing applications expand at a slower rate. Following 26 percent growth in 2004, LED sales in 2005 will rise by only 11 percent to reach US$5.2 billion.
New suppliers in Taiwan, China and South Korea have entered the LED manufacturing and packaging supply chain, and they are aggressively eroding average selling prices as they compete for market share, Rebello said. Furthermore, growth in the single dominant application for HB-LEDs – the backlighting of LCD displays in mobile phones – is beginning to slow as shipments of wireless handsets begin to decelerate. Finally, many of the new lighting applications for the next generation of UHB LEDs have not been commercialized yet, slowing near-term growth, he added.

In diesem Sinne Gruß

- 109 Mio.) in Aussicht gestellt.

Cree 1Q Profit Slips, but Beats Street
Thursday October 20, 6:03 pm ET
Cree First-Quarter Earnings Fall 11 Percent, but Top Wall Street Expectations
DURHAM, N.C. (AP) -- Cree Inc., a maker of light-emitting diodes and semiconductors, said Thursday that profit fell 11 percent in its fiscal first quarter, but the drop was smaller than Wall Street expected and its shares rose after-hours.
For the three months ended Sept. 25, Cree earned $21.7 million, or 28 cents per share, down from $24.4 million, or 32 cents per share, a year ago. Excluding a benefit from an investment, Cree said it would have earned 25 cents per share.
Revenue grew 8 percent to $103.9 million from $95.9 million. Sales were up 5 percent from the immediately preceding quarter.
Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial expected adjusted profit of 23 cents per share on sales of $102.8 million.
The company`s shares rose 70 cents, or 3.1 percent, to $23 in recent after-hours trading.
"Our strategy to win share in white LED cell phone backlight applications has been gaining momentum," Chairman and Chief Executive Chuck Swoboda said in a statement.
For the second quarter, Cree expects earnings of 24 cents to 27 cents per share, or 27 cents to 30 cents per share after excluding the cost of expensing stock options and other equity compensation. The results also include a charge of about half a cent per share for the wind down of its Cree Microwave Sunnyvale operations.
Revenue will range from $106 million to $109 million, Cree said.
Analysts are looking for first-quarter earnings of 24 cents per share on sales of $108.1 million.

Entrepreneurs Create Company to Develop Next Generation Lighting Fixtures
DURHAM, N.C., Oct. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Today Neal Hunter announced he has co-founded, with a group of former Cree scientists and engineers, a company to develop LED-based lighting fixtures. The company`s principle officers are Gerry Negley, Antony van de Ven, and Tom Coleman. Hunter will serve as the company`s Chairman.
"I am excited about the opportunity to team with such a talented group of inventors to bring a truly evolutionary product to the market," Hunter stated. "We believe the time for LED lighting for general use has arrived. Our goal is to integrate Cree`s chip and lamp products into finished fixture assemblies targeting high-volume consumer and industrial applications. Industry sources estimate the domestic market for lamps, lighting fixtures and lighting controls is about $12 billion annually and $40 billion globally," Hunter continued.
The team`s background includes Gerry Negley`s expertise an LED chip and packaging technology. Negley has compiled nine issued patents for Cree along with numerous other pending applications and filings. Antony van de Ven was the technologist behind Cree`s Real Color Display before forming Lighthouse Technologies Ltd. in Hong Kong. van de Ven adds a wealth of expertise to color management and LED systems. Tom Coleman, a co-founder of Cree, contributes with a creative background of equipment, systems and LED Delectronics.
The world faces challenges in meeting the increasing task of energy production. Deployment of LED lighting technology would radically reduce the world`s power demands. Today, about 22 percent of the nation`s energy is used for lighting. When LED-based lighting is fully employed, a net saving of 30 power plants or $17 billion could be realized annually.
Traditional lighting companies have been slow to adopt LED technology in mainstream applications. The lifetime of LEDs would virtually eliminate the need for replacement bulbs, and the replacement bulb market represents a significant portion of profits.
The company, temporarily named LED Lighting Fixtures Inc., plans to open offices in North Carolina and Hong Kong and is currently being funded by the founders. Hunter expects additional funding from private investors on an as-needed basis.

Semiconductor maker Cree (CREE:Nasdaq - commentary - research - Cramer's Take) signed a five-year supply agreement with Seoul Semiconductor, a Korean light emitting diode maufacturer.
Seoul Semiconductor will buy at least $40 million of LED products during the first five quarters of the agreement extending till the fiscal year ending June 2011. The agreement may be extended up to five additional years if certain sales conditions are met.
Cree also entered into a license agreement with Seoul Semiconductors pursuant to which the parties have cross-licensed certain patent rights relating to white LED technologies and have agreed to cooperate in defending these rights.
"We are pleased to announce these agreements with Seoul Semiconductor, which are the results of several years of strong cooperation between our two companies to win market share for white LEDs. Our success to date has been mostly focused on design wins in the Korean market and we look to further expand this success on a worldwide scale over the next several years," the Durham, N.C.-based company said.

Hallo zusammen,

Cree Shares Drop on Weaker Sales Order

Shares of Cree Fall After Reporting $180 Million Order, 10 Percent Drop From Last Year
NEW YORK (AP) -- Shares of Cree Inc., which makes light-emitting diodes, fell in morning trading Thursday after the company announced product orders from Japanese distributor Sumitomo Corp. that were 10 percent lower than last year's orders.
After market close on Wednesday, Cree announced that Sumitomo agreed to buy $180 million worth of products, a 10 percent increase over its forecast for fiscal 2006 sales to the company. The stock rose about 1.5 percent in after-hours trading.
Thursday morning, Needham analyst Pierre Maccagno issued a report to investors saying this time last year, Cree announced $200 million in orders from Sumitomo. While the orders announced Wednesday would represent a 10 percent rise in sales transactions completed, the size of the order is in fact a drop of 10 percent from last year's order. Maccagno estimated sales to Sumitomo for the fiscal year totaled $160 million to $165 million because of lower demand from Japanese consumers.
Shares of Cree fell $2.25, or 8.8 percent, to $24.40 in morning trading on the Nasdaq. The company's shares have traded in a range of $21.68 and $35.30 in the past year.

Cree Lowers 4Q Outlook, Analyst Downgrades Company
NEW YORK (AP) -- Shares of Cree Inc. plunged in premarket electronic trading, the day after the semiconductor product maker slashed its guidance for the fourth quarter, prompting an analyst downgrade.
Late Wednesday, the company, citing production challenges, warned it expects sales to be about $106.7 million for the quarter ended June 25, compared to previous guidance of $106 million to $110 million.
Earnings will also fall below earlier guidance of 22 cents to 24 cents per share. Analysts predict earnings of 23 cents per share on sales of $107.3 million, according to a Thomson Financial poll.
ThinkEquity Partners analyst Mike Burton downgraded Cree to "Accumulate" from "Buy" and lowered his price target to $18 from $30, noting that the company's September quarterly revenue is expected to decline sequentially from weakness in mobile products.
"We believe that this slowdown is industrywide due to an inventory build in the June quarter," Burton said.
Burton expects Cree to be poised to gain next year as it rolls out new products.
"We are not expecting to see these new product sales beginning to provide any leverage until the March quarter," Burton said.

Wo er recht hat, hat er recht.
Der billige Jakob war das nicht mehr. Gottseidank hatte

bringen?
Cree war halt in jeder Hinsicht echt überpowert.
Wer sehen wollte sah.

Cree (CREE - commentary - Cramer's Take) said Thursday that its fourth-quarter earnings slid 37% from the year-ago period.
The semiconductor maker earned $13.2 million, or 17 cents a share, in the fourth quarter ended June 30, compared with $21 million, or 27 cents a share, last year. The results included 3 cents a share related to option expenses and 2 cents a share in tax costs related to an investment.
Analysts polled by Thomson First Call were expecting earnings of 14 cents a share, including options costs.
Fourth-quarter revenue rose 8.7% from the year-ago period to $106.7 million, compared with analysts' expectation of $106.6 million.
For the first quarter of fiscal 2007, Cree sees earnings of 14 cents to 17 cents a share, including stock options expenses of 3 cents a share, on revenue of $102 million to $106 million. Analysts had forecast earnings of 18 cents a share and revenue of $106.3 million.
"Although the fourth quarter was more challenging than we expected, we remain optimistic that we can expand our business by leveraging our strengths in LED chip and SiC materials technology to broaden our product line with higher-value, component-level products for the emerging markets in LED lighting and power," the company said. "While this strategy may limit our operating results in the near term, we believe these investments are critical to put Cree in position to increase shareholder value over the next several years."

Cree Now Waits for Next Market:
17.98 -0.13 Cree's fourth quarter results reported last night might look good on the surface, but the real story is not in the numbers. The company beat earnings estimates by three cents, reporting non-GAAP EPS of $0.19, versus the $0.16 consensus estimate. These results came on revenue that almost exactly matched the consensus revenue estimate, with revenue at $106.7 million versus the $106.6 million estimate. Ordinarily this might be viewed as good results.
However, Cree's guidance, combined with comments about the status of the market for high-brightness LEDs used in TVs and for commercial lighting, puts the results in the shadows, instead of letting them serve as a beacon. With most companies, continual progress towards a visible goal is how the stock price rises. CREE, on the other hand, has doubled earnings in the past three years while growing revenue by 50%, yet the stock price is now back to where it was 36 months ago. The reason? Cree's success in selling their silicon-carbide based LEDs into the cellular phone handset market appears to be over. The company simply cannot compete effectively with low-cost Asian suppliers in the commodity end of the marketplace. That's the only portion of the market that is robust, however.
However, Cree's potential is still "bright." The big potential for the company is to leverage their intellectual property behind white-LEDs by licensing that technology to low-cost manufacturers. Last summer, we felt that market might be approaching, as Cree was able to sign numerous licensing deals. When - or if - the market for white LEDs as a source of commercial lighting ever develops, Cree might become the next Qualcomm and see their revenue stream driven by "zero-cost-of-costs-sold" royalty payments. That's the potential for Cree and most in the market are aware of it. The only question is, when is that market coming?
The company had no real answer to that question, frankly, which leads most analysts to believe it is too far in the future to be invested in now. We tend to disagree, as waiting often causes the investor to miss the first 30% jump in price when it finally becomes clear that the future is coming. In addition, stocks waiting for a market to arrive sometimes slowly and gradually increase over time, as the gathering crowd of "believers" begins to form. Cree's statements about their weakening presence in the handset market and their inability to set any timetable for the "next big wave" that will drive white-LED sales, means that the price of CREE is likely to flounder for a long time. The failure of the stock to drop very much on the disappointing outlook leads us to believe, however, that the downside-risk is now as low as it has ever been for Cree, making it a good time to begin building a position. It is sort of like going out on a surfboard when the ocean is calm - and just waiting. When the wave finally does come, the only ones who catch the really great ride are the ones already in the water. More analysis of Cree can be found in today's Ahead of the Curve column.

10.07.2007
Cree profitiert vom Klimawandel

Cree profitiert vom Klimawandel

inventory as part of the COTCO purchase accounting, which
resulted in an additional $3.0 million of costs of goods sold
during the fourth quarter.
* Cash flow from operations was $26.7 million.
* Cash and investments equaled $294.3 million.
Business Outlook:
For its first quarter of fiscal 2008 ending September 23, 2007, Cree currently targets revenue in a range of $110 million to $115 million with GAAP earnings of $0.15 to $0.18 per diluted share and non-GAAP earnings of $0.09 to $0.12 per diluted share. Non-GAAP earnings per diluted share exclude expenses related to the amortization of acquired intangibles, an expected gain from the sale of marketable securities, stock-based compensation expense and the related tax effects.
Cree will host a conference call at 5:00 p.m. Eastern time today to review the highlights of the fourth quarter fiscal 2007 results and the first quarter fiscal 2008 business outlook, including significant factors and assumptions underlying the targets noted above. The conference call will be available to the public through a live audio web broadcast via the Internet. Log on to Cree's website at www.cree.com and go to "Investor Relations -- Overview" for webcast details. The call will be archived and available on the website through August 21, 2007.

DURHAM, N.C., Aug. 7, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- Cree, Inc. (Nasdaq:CREE), a market-leading innovator of semiconductors that enhance the value of solid-state lighting, power and communications products, today announced revenue of $111.2 million for its fiscal fourth quarter ended June 24, 2007. This represents a 23% increase compared to the fiscal third quarter and a 4% increase compared to revenue of $106.7 million reported for the year-ago period. GAAP net income for the fourth quarter was $6.4 million, or $0.08 per diluted share, compared to net income of $13.2 million or $0.17 per diluted share for the fourth quarter of 2006.
The remainder of this press release highlights the company's financial results on both a GAAP and a non-GAAP basis. The GAAP results include certain costs, charges, gains and losses in accordance with GAAP, which are excluded from non-GAAP results based on management's determination that they are not directly reflective of on-going operations. The schedules attached to this press release include a reconciliation of the GAAP financial information to the non-GAAP results.
GAAP EPS of $0.08 per diluted share includes a net expense of $1.0 million or $0.01 per diluted share due to certain items. These items consist of a gain from the sale of marketable securities of $0.09 per diluted share, expenses related to the COTCO acquisition of $0.07 per diluted share, stock-based compensation expense of $0.02 per diluted share and certain tax adjustments that reduced earnings by $0.01 per diluted share. On a non-GAAP basis, adjusted to exclude these items, net income for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2007 was $7.4 million, or $0.09 per diluted share. On a non-GAAP basis, adjusted to exclude similar items as in fiscal 2007, net income for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2006 was $17.2 million, or $0.22 per diluted share.
For fiscal year 2007, Cree reported revenue of $394.1 million, which represents a 7% decrease compared to revenue of $423.0 million for fiscal 2006. GAAP net income was $57.3 million, or $0.72 per diluted share, compared to $76.7 million, or $0.98 per diluted share for fiscal 2006. On a non-GAAP basis net income for fiscal year 2007 was $35.4 million, or $0.44 per diluted share, compared to $83.2 million, or $1.06 per diluted share, for fiscal 2006.
"Fiscal 2007 was a challenging but successful year for Cree as we made great strides in our transformation from an LED chip and SiC materials technology company into a components company positioned to lead the LED lighting revolution," stated Chuck Swoboda, Cree chairman and CEO. "In the fourth quarter, we again delivered financial results that were in line with our previously announced targets, and the COTCO integration is off to a good start. We believe the combination of growing XLamp(r) LED sales, our new high-brightness, packaged LED product line and a more stable LED chip business has put Cree in a strong position for growth in fiscal 2008."
Recent Business Highlights:
* Completed the acquisition of COTCO, a leading supplier of
high-brightness, packaged LEDs in China, for consideration valued
at approximately $204 million.
* Announced commercial availability of XLamp LEDs with minimum
luminous flux of 100 lumens at 350 mA, a performance increase of
almost 70% in the last year. XLamp LEDs are the first LEDs to be
available in volume with this level of performance.
* Announced that Toronto is joining Raleigh, N.C. in a city-wide
initiative to install LED lighting throughout its infrastructure.
As part of the LED City(tm) program, Toronto intends to evaluate,
deploy and promote the use of LEDs across multiple lighting
applications because LEDs provide an energy-efficient,
mercury-free solution helping to preserve the environment, while
delivering more flexible and longer-lasting lighting than
traditional lighting technologies.
Q4 Financial Metrics:
* On a GAAP basis, gross margin was 29%. On a non-GAAP basis, gross
margin was 32% of revenue and excludes $0.5 million of
stock-based compensation expense and the write-up of the acquired
inventory as part of the COTCO purchase accounting, which
resulted in an additional $3.0 million of costs of goods sold
during the fourth quarter.
Log on to Cree's website at www.cree.com and go to "Investor Relations -- Overview" for webcast details. The call will be archived and available on the website through August 21, 2007.

The schedules attached to this release are an integral part of the release. This press release contains forward-looking statements involving risks and uncertainties, both known and unknown, that may cause actual results to differ materially from those indicated. Actual results, including with respect to our targets and prospects, could differ materially due to a number of factors, including our ability to complete development and commercialization of products under development, such as our pipeline of brighter LED chips and packaged products; our ability to lower costs; potential changes in demand; increasing price competition in key markets; the risk that, due to the complexity of our manufacturing processes and transition of production to larger wafers, we may experience production delays that preclude us from shipping sufficient quantities to meet customer orders or that result in higher production costs and lower margins; risks associated with the ramp-up of our production for our new products; risks resulting from the concentration of our business among few customers, including the risk that customers may reduce or cancel orders or fail to honor purchase commitments; the rapid development of new technology and competing products that may impair demand or render our products obsolete; the potential lack of customer acceptance for our products; risks associated with our recent acquisition; risks associated with on-going litigation; that the possibility that the pending acquisition of Color Kinetics by Philips may not be completed or may be delayed; and other factors discussed in our filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission, including our report on Form 10-K for the fiscal year ended June 25, 2006, and subsequent reports filed with the SEC. Antwort auf Beitrag Nr.: 32.883.535 von AdHick am 27.12.07 22:16:57"Cree shares shoot up on CNBC nod
Wednesday December 26, 3:06 pm ET
Shares of Cree advanced in trading Wednesday after an analyst praised the company during an appearance on business news television channel CNBC.
Richard Prati, the CEO of American Technology Research, told CNBC that he thinks the Durham company is poised to make a big splash in the consumer lighting market.
Cree (Nasdaq: CREE - News) makes the chips that go into light-emitting diodes, or LEDs, as well as some lighting fixtures for household use. LEDs use little energy and last much longer than traditional lights, but for the most part, they've been used in devices such as cell phones and haven't caught fire as household items.
Prati, however, told CNBC that Cree - which has increasingly been trying to position itself as a manufacturer of household LEDs - should have success in that market.
"This is a company that we think is really misunderstood," he told CNBC. "This is one of the few companies that we can find that can save people 90 percent on their energy consumption, will last for about 20 years, as far as the LEDs that they install, and it's environmentally safe."
Prati also claimed that LED lighting technology is much closer to commercial acceptance than most analysts think.
The CNBC exposure sent shares of Cree up as much as 15 percent on Wednesday. Shares were up about 10 percent in afternoon trading, to $25.92.
It's not the first time American Technology Research has given Cree a bump in the markets. The firm has been bullish on the company since initiating coverage of its stock earlier this year with a "buy" rating and a 52-week price target of $50.
Analyst Andrew Huang now has a $55 price target on the stock - nearly 60 percent above the shares' 52-week high of $34.87.

Antwort auf Beitrag Nr.: 32.883.579 von AdHick am 27.12.07 22:20:54Gib es ein Monopol auf LEDs?
So weit ich weiß nicht.
Was also sollte Konkurrenten von einem Markteintritt abhalten?

"SiC transistors drive solar inverter efficiency

MUNICH, Germany — The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (Freiburg, Germany) claims it has achieved a record efficiency for its inverter designed for PV generators. Key to the high efficiency are Silicon Carbide (SiC) power transistors from US vendor Cree, Inc.
Fraunhofer ISE is so far the first user for these innovative power transistors, explained Bruno Burger, head of the power electronics group at Fraunhofer ISE. "SiC transistors switch faster and show less forward resistance, compared to conventional components", Burger said. Hitherto, SiC components were used mostly to produce white LEDs.
The inverter, designed for a power range of up to 5 kilowatts, is characterized by an efficiency of 97.5 percent, the institute claims.
Besides the SiC MOSFETs, a novel inverter topology dubbed Heric was responsible for the high efficiency. Heric, for which a patent is pending, improves the efficiency by an additional percentage point, Burger said.
The institute plans to license the technology to industrial customers, Burger explained. However, the production will depend greatly on the availability of the semiconductors which presently are only in the prototype state."
