Apple (AAPL) is likely to add a second U.S. mobile carrier for the iPhone by the first half of calendar 2011, and perhaps sooner, Kaufman Bros. analyst Shaw Wu asserts in a research note this morning. And he thinks the most leading candidate is T-Mobile, rather than Verizon Wireless or Sprint.
“While the general consensus is around Verizon (which we believe will happen eventually), we continue to believe that T-Mobile USA is the most likely candidate given its use of similar cellular technology as AT&T,” he writes in a research note. “Also, we are picking up that T-Mobile views the iPhone as key in winning back lost customers and as such could be more likely to agree to AAPL’s terms.”
Wu writes that it is his understanding that the technical hurdles to supporting the T-Mobile network are minor compared to the challenges of developing CDMA technology, which would be required to move the phone to Verizon or Sprint.
“While we believe iPhone 4, as a significant upgrade, will likely see great success at AT&T driven by upgrades, we believe AAPL ultimately needs to sign an additional U.S. carrier to sustain its high growth rates,” he writes. “Today, VZ is the largest U.S. wireless carrier with 93 million subscribers; AT&T comes in at 87 million, Sprint at 47 million, and T-Mobile USA at 34 million. Adding an additional U.S. carrier would expand iPhone’s TAM by 40%-107%. It is notable that signing up both T-Mobile and Sprint would almost be the equivalent of signing VZ.”
Wu says his sources indicate one reason Apple is open to adding another carrier is to attack Android more directly. “Today, Android remains a niche platform with only 9% U.S. market share despite strong efforts by VZ and several hardware vendors including HTC, Motorola, Samsung, Dell, etc.,” he reports. “Looking at industry data, Android’s wins have been where iPhone isn’t available and that could change dramatically if the iPhone were available on more carriers.”
