MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif.- Looking to get started paying for goods with your new iPhone?
Apple Pay is now live.
Apple Pay is the new mobile payments system that lets consumers pay at retail with the iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus phones (sorry, old iPhones don't work) or via online with the new iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3, which will be released Friday.
With Apple Pay, you use the fingerprint sensor ("Touch ID") on the iPhone to act as your password to connect the iPhone to the bank and approve the transaction.
To start with Apple Pay:
• Go to Software Update (in Settings, General) on your iPhone and update to iOS 8.1
• In Settings, open "Passbook & Apple Pay," and set up with your credit or debit cards.
• You can use the iPhone camera to photograph your credit card information, and keyboard to enter the security code.
• If asked to choose between "Credit" or "Debit," Apple recommends choosing "Credit" to get "the most consistent Apple Pay experience." Choosing "Debit" may not always work successfully with some older merchant payment terminals and back-end systems, Apple says.
Besides the three major credit card companies, Visa, MasterCard and American Express, Apple says over 500 banks have signed on — but not all will be live immediately. Apple says they will be participating "by the end of this year and early next year."
At launch, banks include Bank of America, Capital One Bank, Chase, Citi and Wells Fargo.
(Apple notes that consumers will still get their rewards and benefits when they pay via credit card and Apple Pay.)
