DJ Nybot Coffee Review: Surges Before Sep Notices StartNEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Arabica coffee futures sped to 2-week highs on the New
York Board of Trade on Tuesday, recovering from a morning dip and racing
through their early highs as funds covered shorts and bought. Sep-Dec rolling
was brisk before notices start Wednesday.
September ended up 120 points at $1.0820 a pound while December gained 165
points to $1.1260.
"We retraced, rallying back as speculators and managed money bought at the
end," a desk manager said. "The Sep-Dec spread widened out considerably at the
end. Futures volume was over 40,000 lots, but included more than 10,000 against
actuals.
"We'd be even higher, but ran out of time," he continued. "I've been looking
at $1.1405 as an upside objective for December and might revise my target up to
$1.20. There's no rain of magnitude in the forecast for Brazil through the end
of this month. If it doesn't rain in the first half of September, the December
contract could (be) headed to $1.50."
The Nybot September-December spread ended at 440 points, versus 395 points
Monday.
A total of 5,240 against actuals were posted in September and 5,046 in
December. Futures volume was estimated at 40,520 lots and in the options ring,
6,664 calls and 4,663 puts traded.
Temperatures in several non-coffee growing areas in southern Minas Gerias,
Brazil, fell to freezing Monday night. The nation's groves are expected to be
mostly dry through Saturday, and arid weather is being watched for any impact
on the October bloom for the next crop.
The Brazilian government plans to auction 25,000 60-kilogram bags of beans
from federal stocks in Parana state on Wednesday. Officials hold two auctions
every month.
Brazil from Aug. 1-21 exported 1,294,928 60-kilogram bags versus 888,604 bags
in the same July period, according to by the Green Coffee Exporters Council or
Cecafe.
Brazilian officials are expected to issue a third estimate of the current
crop Friday and might raise their forecast. New York traders say they've been
working with a higher number than the official view of 40.6 million bags
anyway.
North American and European roasters will start to line up beans soon to meet
peak winter needs.
Euronext.liffe on Monday suspended another 3,098 lots in certified coffee
stocks because of excess moisture in warehouses owned by Henry Bath Italia in
Trieste port. That reduction follows 2,021 lots suspended on Aug. 3 for the
same reason. The exchange said, however, that it "anticipates that a
significant number of the suspended lots are likely to be found to be undamaged
or capable of being re-piled to form new lots from the sound bags."
Nybot Sep finds support at 105.60-105.50, 105.20, 105.00 and a gap at
104.40-104.00 cents, and faces resistance at 108.25, 108.50, 108.90,
109.00-109.20 and 109.50.

DJ MARKET TALK: Nybot Coffee Gaps Higher, Follows London1023 EDT [Dow Jones]-- Sep Nybot coffee futures gapped open higher Wednesday,
amid strength in the London coffee market. Buy-stops were triggered, which
helped send Sep coffee to an early high at $1.0700. Both fund and speculator
buying was behind the early move, brokers and traders say. Trade selling then
emerged, which trimmed initial gains. Hernando de la Roche, managing director
at the Hencorp Coffee Group, points to the tight robusta supplies as a factor.
"London opened up very strong and that inspired more buying in New York." He
did note some origin selling occurred in the back months, including March and
May 2007. Overall, however, he concludes, "the market still looks very strong."
