Overpriced automation
Too ambitious growth prospects seems priced in
With this note, we reinstate coverage on Kuka with a sell rating post
restriction. We believe the company is well set to benefit from an increased
level of automation and is one the few existing small and midcap plays on this
scheme. However, a) robotics revenue growth underperformed the global
robot growth in the last 2 years, indicating market share losses b) CAPEX
spending of Kuka's auto customers (50% of sales) is peaking out & c) we see
the Swisslog take-over as well as Kuka's current multiples reflecting too much
optimism in particular after the recent move in the CHF.
End market diversification achieved but a big price for a low growth business
In our view, the key rationale for the Kuka/Swisslog deal is to become a holistic
automation solutions provider with some hardware being produced by Kuka
while previously sourced from 3rd parties. We believe the deal fits some of
Kuka’s announced M&A targets such as a diversification from the cyclical
automotive industry (now 50% down from 70%). However, it does not help to
further internationalize the business as the regional footprint is hardly different.
Further, we see the acquisition multiple of 17x EV/EBIT as quite rich
considering Swisslog’s sales declined with a CAGR of 4% from 08-13 and the
company’s margin is ~30% below the ‘07 peak at only 3%. Additionally, we
believe the recent move of the CHF will weigh on Swisslog’s, and therefore the
group’s, profit (DBe: Swisslog has 5% of sales in CHF but ~10% of the cost
base plus the obvious translation impact).
Latest channel checks confirm our scenario of peaking auto capex
We also note that automotive is the key robot market accounting for ~50% of
robotics sales in the last 3 years. We expect Kuka to be hit by a) less exposure
to the still largest market in absolute terms as well as b) reduced growth rates.
An aging workforce in developed countries and a shifting global tide in growth
towards EMs fueled OEMs to ramp up automation. However, as growth rates
in several EMs are slowing down and capacity is still being ramped up, we
believe incremental growth will slow down. As OEMs also face significant
other cost burdens from the regulatory side (FITT ’Pricing the car of tomorrow’,
15 Dec ‘14) and need to cut back on costs, we expect capex to flatten out.
Valuation and Risks – incorporating Swisslog
Kuka now trades in line with the capital goods 2016E EV/EBIT multiple while
the profit margin is still only ~half of the universe and with a ~15% premium to
comparable auto names. We derive our TP on an equally-weighted mix of SotP
analysis with 2016E EV/EBIT multiples of relevant peers and an EV/IC model
((ROIC - g)/(WACC - g), with g of 0%). Main upside risks: auto CAPEX numbers,
demand for automation as well as risks associated with M&A.
