IBERDROLA AND THE BARCELONA SUPERCOMPUTING CENTER DEVELOP THE SEDAR PROJECT

This new software has been developed with the collaboration of the National Centre for Renewable Energies (CENER)
This R&D&I project aims to create an innovative IT model which will improve current studies for estimating onshore and offshore wind production, and which may be applied throughout the whole operational life of these facilities
The Sedar Project (High Resolution Wind Simulation) is a significant contribution to the technological development of wind power, as it will pave the way for the construction of new windfarms with greater guarantees of investment
Both the development of the project and its subsequent application will take place in the facilities of Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), using software run by MareNostrum, one of the most important supercomputers in the world.

IBERDROLA and the Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS), are jointly developing a major R&D&I initiative known as the 'Sedar Project (High Resolution Wind Simulation)'.

SEDAR is an innovative project aimed at developing a new computer model to improve estimates of electrical energy production in windfarms before their construction.

Current models have a significant limitation in their calculation times, and this project has succeeded in overcoming this shortcoming through the use of supercomputing techniques. Furthermore, the project will develop improvements for the resolution of physical models which, so far, have been constrained by computing times.

In the initial stage, already being tested, the project will design new windfarms that can be deployed with greater guarantees, as it will provide the most suitable locations for installing the wind turbines and reduce the uncertainty involved in investing in this type of study. This phase of the project, which is done using Alya Green software, can be applied in future onshore and offshore wind farms.

For the Sedar Project, IBERDROLA and the Barcelona Supercomputing Center are using Spain's most important supercomputer, the MareNostrum, one of the most powerful in the world. Both organisations have agreed to carry out the development of the model and its subsequent deployment in IBERDROLA's new windfarm projects in the facilities of the BCS-CNS.

The Barcelona Supercomputing Center – Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) is the leading supercomputing centre in Spain, and specialises in high-performance computing. It performs a dual function, offering supercomputing infrastructures and services to Spanish and European scientists, and generating knowledge and technology to be transferred to society.

The BSC manages Spain´s Supercomputing Network (RES) and is a “Severo Ochoa” centre for excellence, a top tier element of Europe´s research infrastructure PRACE (Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe).

Since 2004, the BSC has been developing Alya, a software for resolving multi-physical problems with a wide range of industrial applications. One of the best known is the Alya Red project which simulates the operation of the human heart.

The INNPACTO SC-OPENFOAM project is part of the SEDAR initiative and is supported by financing from the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness within the INNPACTO programme, together with the National Centre for Renewable Energies (CENER), which has contributed its prior experience in developing these wind power models.

      Contribution to wind power technology

This initiative will mean an important technological advancement for the wind industry which is essential in the short term. It also represents yet another decisive contribution by IBERDROLA to the development of this energy source.

The first was the establishment of the Renewable Energy Operation Centre (CORE) in Toledo in 2003, where for the very first time the control and operation of all the renewable facilities were integrated within a single company. The inauguration of this control centre represented a turning point for wind power, as it ceased to be an energy source that was difficult to operate and control and became easy to manage.

IBERDROLA subsequently developed the Meteoflow project to forecast daily windfarm production, thereby enabling wind power to take its place in the electrical power market, and representing a decisive step in facilitating the work of operating and maintaining windfarms.

With the Sedar Project, IBERDROLA has consolidated its benchmark position in the development of renewables research projects, as it allows windfarms to be designed so as to present lower risks for investment.

IBERDROLA is currently at the forefront of developing R&D&I projects in the sector in both onshore and offshore wind power as well as in wave, tide, biomass and biogas power.

Moreover, for over 15 years the Company has been leading the industry project pipeline with investment worth over €25 billion, brining current installed capacity to 14,000 MW and being a market leader in countries such as Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Was die geplanten Veräußerungen betreffe, so seien bereits etwa 1,2 Milliarden Euro erlöst worden.

IBERDROLA RECORDS €1,728 MILLION NET PROFIT IN FIRST HALF, DOWN 2%

Ebitda was stable at €4.05 billion, a slight decline of 0.9%
Taxes and levies rose 79% over the same period last year to €863 million
Cost reduction enabled Group efficiency to improve by 7.6%
Continued progress in meeting 2012-2014 strategic outlook goals: divestments surpass €1.2 billion
Lower investments and sales of non-core assets helped reduce debt by €3,225 million and improve gearing to 45% compared with 48.3% at the end of June last year

      | Event connection through webcastOpen in new window. |

IBERDROLA recorded net earnings of €1,728 million in the first half of 2013, down 2% on the same period last year. Gross operating profit (Ebitda) held at levels similar to last year, standing at €4,051 million, a slight decline of 0.9%.

Gross margin improved 5.8% to €6,676.4 million, with increases across all businesses and countries where IBERDROLA operates, except in Brazil which was negatively impacted by a tariff review at Elektro and excess energy costs resulting from adverse climate factors.

Recurring net profit rose 2.8% to €1,402 million, with strong business performance offsetting a sharp increase in levies and taxation that rose 79% during the period to €864 million compared to the €481 million corresponding to the first half of 2012. This amount includes taxes on generation in Spain, amounting to €252 million, and the impact of €95 million from energy efficiency programmes in the UK.

The Company continued to improve operating efficiency with a 7.6% gain compared to the same period last year. Net operating expenses declined 2.2% to €1,762 million driven by efficiency programmes in effect.

IBERDROLA recorded the best operational ratios among the leading European utilities by market capitalization and thereby strengthened its position as a benchmark for the sector. At the end of 2012, the ratio of installed megawatts (MW) to workforce was 1.5 for Iberdrola compared to 0.9 MW for the average of European utilities. The Company was also first in the ranking of installed MW to renewables workforce at 7.2 and in points of supply to networks workforce at 1,650 against 2.3 and 805, respectively, for the average of the other major 5 European utilities.

Net operating profit (EBIT) was 65.3% down at €881.7 million due primarily to writeoffs of development costs related to the renewables project portfolio, reflecting uncertainty arising from current market conditions as well as an adjustment of asset values in the US and Canada. These adjustments are reflected in provisions which stand at €1,657 million.

Financial costs were 15.2% or €568 million lower mainly as a result of a reduction in the average outstanding balance of net debt and a positive impact from currency hedging.

Corporate taxation registered a positive €1,460.5 million, a consequence of the Law 16/2012 offering the option of effecting a balance sheet adjustment that allowed a revaluation of assets for tax purposes in line with pre-determined coefficients that incorporate inflation.

Some of IBERDROLA's subsidiaries in Spain have opted to take this option and revalue certain assets. According to norms governing balance sheet adjustments, the amortization of revalued amounts is tax deductible from 2015 and throughout the remaining life of those assets. It also establishes payment of a 5% tax on the amount revalued in the financial year of the adjustment in order to be eligible.

As a result of this balance sheet adjustment, IBERDROLA increased the value of some assets for tax purposes in Spain by €6,323 million. The amount tax deductible against this revaluation came to €1,854 million while the 5% tax represented €316 million. As a result, the net amount under Corporate Taxation came to €1,538 million. Under IFRS norms both the 5% tax and the entire fiscal savings accruing from the asset adjustment should be incorporated into this year's accounts, independently of whether the savings are realised from 2015 and over the remaining life of the revalued assets.

Net earnings were 2% lower at €1,728 million, but improved business performance enabled the Company to maintain shareholder remuneration levels in 2013.

IBERDROLA contributed a total of €5.3 billion to public finances in 2012 in the countries where it operates through taxes and other levies, of which 49% was in Spain even though the country accounted for only 30% of Group net earnings last year.

This sum is likely to increase by the end of 2013 with the Company having already contributed €2.7 billion in the first six months, a rise of 23% over the same period last year with a significant increase in outlays in Spain which now accounts for 56% of the total.

Strategic Outlook goals achieved, solid finances

During the period, IBERDROLA made further progress in strengthening its balance sheet, enjoying liquidity of €11,945 million by end June, enough to meet financing needs for 36 months.

Net Group adjusted debt came to €28.8 billion, a reduction of €3,225 million against the same time last year, not taking into account €2,153 million pending repayment from the tariff deficit. Including this amount, debt stood at €26.65 billion against €29.32 billion in the first six months of 2012.

IBERDROLA also continued to advance in its non-strategic asset divestment plan, with €1.2 billion sold to date of which €800 million has been received. Gearing, including the tariff deficit, stood at 45% at the end of June compared to 48.3% in June last year, and excluding the tariff deficit, it was 43.1% and 46.1% respectively.

This progress has enabled the Group to improve its financial ratios, with the relation of funds from operations (FFO) to net debt and that of retained cash flow to net debt standing at 21.1% and 18%, respectively – both including the tariff deficit.

Key operating aspects of the period

      1. Networks business: growth in all areas except Brazil

Ebitda from IBERDROLA’s networks businesses in the first six months was 0.8% lower than the same period last year at €1,965 million. Of this total, 62% came from outside Spain with all regions except Brazil growing in the first half.

Gross margin for this business was 1.5% lower at €2,855.6 million. By countries, relevant factors included a tariff adjustment in Spain and higher revenues in the UK resulting from a larger asset base. In the United States, revenues rose with a contribution from the electricity transmission line in Maine. In total, gross margin from these areas rose 5.3% to €2,315 million.

In Brazil, however, gross margin was down 22.9%, with a 5.8% increase in demand offset by a tariff adjustment for Elektro producing a negative impact of €70 million in the first half, as well as the effect of extra energy supply costs of €43 million that are expected to be recouped through tariff adjustments.

      2. Generation and retail: levies increase 144.8%

Generation and retail recorded Ebitda of €1,172 million in the first six months, a decline of 6.1% impacted by a 144.8% rise in levies and taxation from €327 million to €552.7 million.

This sharp increase in levies and taxation, which rose 2.4 times in the period, absorbed a strong performance from this business where gross margin rose 12.4% and costs were reduced by 5.9%.

By countries, production rose 5.1% in Spain helped by increased rainfall benefitting hydro, but the result suffered a €208 million negative impact from new taxes on generation in Law 15/2012.

In the UK, performance was helped by increased production plus improved results from retail where the customer base rose 7.3% and colder temperatures also led to increased demand. Nonetheless, energy efficiency programmes had a negative impact of €95 million.

      3. Renewables: ebitda rose 10.5%

Gross margin from renewables rose 12.5% in the first half of the year to €1,32 million, driven by a 10.1% rise in production reflecting a 3.5% increase in operating capacity to 14,028 MW and a high average load factor of 30.6% compared to 28.7% in the same period last year.

Ebitda from renewables was 10.5% higher at €937.5 million, while a 0.4% reduction in net operating costs also helped the improvement in gross margin.

Tax and levies rose to 142.2% or €58.7 million, due principally to fiscal measures approved in Spain under Royal Decree 2/2013.

IBERDROLA AND PORT OF SASSNITZ SIGN OFFSHORE TERMINAL LEASE FOR WIKINGER WIND FARM

The company reaffirms its commitment to Germany’s renewable energy market
Around 100,000 m2 of storage and pre-assembly area have been secured for the foreseen installation period
Key activities to be hosted in the port include load-in from transport vessels, storage and load-out to installation vessels of the main components of the project
The development of Wikinger offshore wind project is progressing quickly, with construction scheduled to begin in 2015 and full commissioning in 2017

(Jürgen Blume, in charge of IBERDROLA in Germany and Erwin Sellering,Prime Minister of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.)

IBERDROLA, through its Berlin-based subsidiary IBERDROLA Renovables Offshore Deutschland, and Fährhafen Sassnitz GmbH have announced the signature of a lease agreement for the Port’s Offshore Terminal South, which will be used for storage and pre-assembly activities of the Wikinger project installation. The contract was signed last Friday at a ceremony presided over by Mr. Erwin Sellering, Prime Minister of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

After assessing nearby port facilities, the Offshore Terminal South (OTS) at the Port of Sassnitz (FHS) has been selected as the optimum alternative for warehousing, assembly, storing, and transportation of components and wind turbines to the site. An area of approximately 100,000 m2 has been secured for the foreseen installation period.

Key activities to be hosted in the port include load-in from transport vessels, storage and load-out to installation vessels of the main components of the wind farm, such as foundations, piles, jackets, wind turbines and cable.

Under the terms of the contract, offices for the project installation management, marine coordination and transfer of staff to the site will also be based at the terminal.

Wikinger wind farm project contemplates installation of up to 80 offshore wind turbines, founded on pre-piled jackets, in an area located approximately 30 km NE of Rügen Island, in the German Exclusive Economic Zone in the Baltic Sea.

With an investment of up to €1.5 billion, the project will generate €650 million in local and regional taxes through a 20 year period and will create around 100 direct and indirect local jobs. Once in operation, the wind farm will produce stable, safe and clean electricity equivalent to the consumption of more than 400,000 German households.

Development of the Wikinger offshore wind project is progressing quickly, with construction scheduled to begin in late 2015 and commissioning in early 2017, counting on the current feed-in-tariff system.

A full geological survey of the seabed in an area of some 34 square kilometres on the project site was successfully concluded in early May, representing a key result to achieve further consenting steps by the Bundesamt für Seeschifffahrt und Hydrographie (BSH).

The tender process for the procurement and installation of foundations, inter-array cable and key components of the offshore substation, totaling some €900 million, has already been launched.

Also, to secure the availability of the turbines, a preferred turbine supplier agreement was signed by IBERDROLA and the German Areva Wind in November 2012. The contract includes foundation and tower design optimization, project logistics, installation concept and project certification.

If everything goes according to plan, including grid connection being secured by 2016 or early 2017 and also keeping a satisfactory feed-in tariff, the first procurement contracts should be awarded in early 2014. In this respect, IBERDROLA welcomes investor reassurances expressed by senior German authorities about the need for long term stability of the regulatory framework. Nevertheless, grid connection availability, a stable tariff mechanism and a streamlined consenting process are essential to avoid unnecessary costs and risks and meet investors’ expectations.

IBERDROLA’s offshore wind project pipeline in Germany stands at over 2,000 MW out of which 1,000 MW could be installed in the German Baltic Sea by 2019. Towards the end of 2013 over €70 million will be invested in the development of Wikinger alone.

IBERDROLA BEGINS EXTENSION OF SAN PEDRO HYDROELECTRIC POWER PLANT

Following commissioning of Santo Estevo II, in operation since February
The Company will invest €52 million in the construction of the new plant
During the next three years of construction, IBERDROLA will generate up to 190 direct jobs

IBERDROLA has initiated the main construction phase at San Pedro hydroelectric plant extension project, located in the river Sil, in the municipality of Nogueira de Ramuín (Ourense).

The new phase, San Pedro II, will add 25 megawatts (MW) to the existing facility which has an installed capacity of 32 MW. IBERDROLA will invest €52 million to deliver the new power house that will be partially located underground.

During the next three years of construction, IBERDROLA expects to create up to 190 direct jobs.

In order to ensure security and progress at the construction works, the Company has closed a private access road linking Peares village and Santo Estevo power plant, located upstream of San Pedro. Both plants can be reached via the A Rasa main road.

Construction of San Pedro II comes a month after IBERDROLA chairman, Ignacio Galán, and the President of Galicia’s Regional Government, Alberto Núñez Feijoo, inaugurated the Santo Estevo II power plant, in operation since February.

San Pedro hydroelectric plant acts as a reservoir for Santo Estevo, controlling the Sil river flow. Once extension of the latter was completed, it was necessary to also extend the former.

With 441 MW installed capacity and a €127 million overhaul, Santo Estevo has become the largest hydroelectric complex in Galicia, able to produce 1,000 gigawatt hours (GWh) annually, enough clean power to meet average energy demand of approximately 285,000 homes.

Built completely underground, the extension of the original plant, now referred to as Santo Estevo II, is perfectly integrated into the surroundings: the Sil river canyon.

Once construction of San Pedro II is finished and with Santo Estevo II already commissioned, IBERDROLA would have fulfilled the objectives these extension projects set to achieve: sluice control, balancing flows downstream and optimizing exploitation of an indigenous, renewable energy source.
