Kuannersuit: Report on social consequences is now ready for approval
Politics · Business · Environment ·3 April 2019 · 12:20by Merete Lindstrøm
It is a step on the way to delivering the final application to establish a mine with extraction of rare earths and uranium in South Greenland.
The English-language version of the VSB report on the mining project at Kuannersuit has been accepted by the Department of Business and Energy. They believe that it now meets the legal requirements.
Greenland Minerals writes on the company's website that the report on social consequences - the so-called VSB report - at the mine project at Kuannersuit is now ready for public consultation. And it is a step on the way to delivering the final application to establish a mine with extraction of rare earths and uranium in South Greenland.
- It is a very important and positive step in the work of getting the final approvals, says CEO of Greenland Minerals John Mair to KNR.
The Ministry confirms
The head of department in the Department of Business and Energy, Jørn Skov Nielsen, confirms to KNR that the department has said good for the English version of the VSB report:
- We have given our comment that the report, in our opinion, now contains what it must be in law, he says.
Jørn Skov Nielsen explains that from here you must have the Greenlandic and Danish version for reading before you can send the reports to Naalakkersuisut, who must approve them, so that they can come in public consultation.
John Mair says that the two translations are ready in a few days.

He emphasizes that the work must now be directed at the public hearings, where the population and other parties have the opportunity to ask questions to the report:
- I look forward to coming back to South Greenland. Our relationship with the population and the authorities down there is very important to us as a company and in relation to our social responsibility regarding the mining project, he says.
The EIA report is also well under way
The most discussed issue in connection with a possible mine at Kuannersuit is the question of how much the mine wants to affect the environment. The EIA report, which deals with the issue, is still not ready for approval by the Greenland Government.
The director of the Danish Environmental Protection Agency for the Minerals and Minerals Area, Najaaraq Demant-Port, states that a number of corrections and updates from Greenland Minerals are still awaiting the EIA report before the report meets the requirements of the legislation. According to John Mair, the last things are ready to be delivered within a few weeks.
