SAUDI ARABIA, JEDDAH — Saudi Arabia will need some $50 billion USD worth of investment in its power and water sectors over the next few years, according to participants at the Saudi Water and Power Forum (SWPF), held in Jeddah this week.
"The government strategy that places emphasis on partnership with the private sector will increase investment in these sectors in a very short period," SWPF head Adel Boshnaq said after the forum’s conclusion on December 4.
"Demand on water and power in Saudi Arabia is grows by 10 percent annually. The region will suffer from water scarcity and droughts," he warned.
The kingdom is currently implementing $32 billion USD worth of water and sanitation projects. According to Saudi Minister of Water and Electricity Abdullah al Hussain, the kingdom is building some 80,000 kilometers of water pipelines and 23,000 kilometers of sewage pipelines.
Khaled Solaiman, deputy chairman of the Renewable Energy Department said: "Our aim is to provide 50 percent of the country’s desalinated water and power supply using renewable and atomic energy."
"The kingdom seeks to manufacture 60 percent of the components of nuclear energy and renewable energy stations within the next 20 years," he added.
"We have identified the sites suitable for building nuclear plants in different cities of the kingdom. The kingdom plans to export electricity to other Gulf countries, North Africa and Europe."
Saudi Arabia currently produces 4.6 million cubic meters of desalinated water daily. Most of its desalination plants use traditional technologies that consume large amounts of fuel, and around 52 percent of its desalination plants are outdated.
Experts say that replacing old facilities will require large investments, which opens the door for involvement of private companies.
The Saudi government is looking to develop more desalination plants in order to transform the country from an importer of desalination technologies to an exporter, according to officials.

RIYADH — ItN Nanovation AG finalized contracts with Juffali to form a joint venture, Saudi Water Nanovation LLC. ItN Nanovation will initially hold a 17.5 percent stake in the joint venture, but will have an option to increase the stake to 40 percent by 2015. Saudi Water Nanovation will distribute ceramic flat membrane systems and accessories in the Middle East & North Africa region, produced at its own facilities in Saudi Arabia. The products will be used for prefiltration in reverse osmosis. The joint venture should start production in 2013.
