Preliminary cost of sales, excluding depletion2 for the three month period was $7.3 million resulting in cash operating margins1 of approximately $1,383 per attributable gold equivalent ounce1 ($3.7 million and $1,541 per attributable gold equivalent ounce for the comparable period in 2021, respectively).

The Response: appreciate your inquiry regarding the financing announced yesterday. I can tell you that it was not a decision made lightly, and if you’re amenable, I’d like to share a bit more details on the rationale of the financing.

The proceeds of the financing will largely go to paying down the company’s debt facility, which was drawn on to pay for some of the transactions that closed earlier this year. Currently, Sandstorm’s credit facility balance is approx. $520 million, with a total capacity of $625 million. This balance includes the majority of the BaseCore transaction (~$425M) as well as the outstanding balance of the Nomad credit facility and a lump sum payment required for the Platreef gold stream.

With rapidly rising interest rates, Sandstorm’s management made the decision to launch the financing and pay down the debt to offset future interest costs. If the Fed follows through on its stated interest rate trajectory, our effective interest rate will become close to 8% (it used to be closer to 3.5%) and assuming all we do with the cash proceeds of this financing is pay down debt, then the interest savings alone will increase our earnings per share. Per share metrics are how we evaluate our decisions in these matters and because of interest rates, this will be accretive on a per share basis to our existing shareholders.

We also want to ensure that we have the capital available for other stream and royalty opportunities that may present themselves. Given the uncertainty of the interest rate environment, management deemed that it was prudent to fortify our balance sheet now to offset any macroeconomic headwinds, including the potential for a suppressed gold market in the short to mid-term.

If the Fed does not follow through on the path they have laid out, the cash will be available to make intelligent acquisitions at the bottom of the market, or to buy back the same shares. We have done so in the past and will not hesitate to do it in the future.

Sandstorm Gold (NYSE:SAND) said Tuesday it will renew its share buyback program to purchase up to 18.9M of its common shares, or ~10% of issued and outstanding shares as of March 31, after its plan was approved by the Toronto Stock Exchange.

At Monday's closing price of C$10.66, or US$8.54, the value of the shares intended for buyback would be worth C$201.5M.

Sandstorm has an existing normal course issuer bid which expires on April 6 with the option of purchasing up to 19.1M common shares.

In the last 12 months, the company has purchased more than 4.65M common shares pursuant to its NCIB.
