US Pacific Hegemony vs. a Rising China
      Column: Politics
      Region: Eastern Asia
      Country: China

7856543The complexity and history behind the current tensions in Asia Pacific are belied by simplistic narratives underpinned by superficial nationalism. China’s portrayal across the Western media as a regional “bully” versus its victims across Southeast Asia is dividing the general public down two sides of a predictable line.

On one side are those who welcome the rise of China as a counterbalance for longstanding Western hegemony across Asia Pacific, on the other are those that fear China will simply replace a “benevolent” Western hegemony with its own brand of regional domination.

Somewhere in the middle lies the truth, but to arrive there, one must understand the true nature of the unfolding, and very unnecessary tensions in the South China Sea.

...We have noticed that a lot of rumors and reports have appeared about China's involvement in Syria. As far as I know, there are no such plans. For instance, the Liaoning aircraft carrier is still being used for scientific purposes," she said during a daily news briefing.

Several Chinese media have refuted claims concerning Liaoning's involvement in military operations in the war-torn country.

Liaoning is generally classified as a training ship, intended to allow the Navy to practice with carrier usage.

The Chinese yuan became the fourth most-used currency for cross-border payments in August, according to global transaction services organization SWIFT. It’s the first time, the yuan has moved ahead of the Japanese yen.

There was a “substantial” increase in the use of the Chinese currency in the final week of August, and came on the back of market volatility, according to a report by SWIFT. This was caused by concerns over the Chinese economy slowing down and Beijing’s devaluation of the yuan, the report added.

      — RT (@RT_com) January 28, 2015

Data shows the yuan was used far less in global payments than the US dollar, the euro and the British pound. In August 2012 the yuan was twelfth on SWIFT's list.

The yuan was used in 2.8 percent of global payments in August, compared with 44.8 percent for the dollar, 27.2 percent for the euro and 8.5 percent for the British pound.

More than 100 countries used the yuan for payments in August, with over 90 percent concentrated in 10 countries. Most of those payments have been processed in Singapore (24.4 percent) and the United Kingdom (21.6 percent). Worldwide payments in the yuan were up 14 percent from a year earlier, and have been provided by more than 1,700 financial institutions....

Since the Las Bambas acquisition, buyers in China and Hong Kong have proposed or completed about $700 million of deals for copper assets, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The Democratic Republic of Congo this month approved Zijin Mining Group Co.’s purchase of a 49.5 percent stake in country’s Kamoa copper project, while the Chinese company was said in June to have been among those to show interest in Barrick Gold Corp.’s sale of a stake in its Zaldivar mine in Chile.

      Rußland kauft weiter entschlossen Gold:

Russia rapidly increases its gold reserves

      tweet

Russia’s appetite for gold accelerated last month, with the country adding the most to its reserves since at least March.

The nation increased holdings to 42.4 million ounces from 41.4 million ounces in July, the central bank said on its website Friday. The amount bought was about the same as the 30.5 metric tons that Russia purchased in March, then the highest amount in six months.

Russia, the sixth-biggest holder of the metal, more than tripled its hoard since 2005 and holds the most metal since at least 1993, International Monetary Fund data show. It’s been steadily buying bullion even as international sanctions over the Ukrainian conflict and a plunge in oil prices contributed to a collapse in the ruble. Gold priced in rubles jumped 60 percent in the past year.

“Russia has been building its holdings for a long time now for very political reasons,” Adrian Ash, head of research at BullionVault, said by phone from London. “It shows the emerging-market bid remains strong for gold, which is proving supportive.”

      Russia gold reserves

Russia added about 13 tons in July and 24 tons the month before that. China, Kazakhstan, Ukraine and Belarus are among other nations that have been accumulating gold
