Where are North America’s battery anode plants being built?

Zitat von Oginvest: The electrification of the global transportation system doesn’t happen without graphite. That’s because the lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles are composed of an anode (negative) on one side and a cathode (positive) on the other. Graphite is used in the anode.

The cathode is where metals like lithium, nickel, manganese and cobalt are used. Depending on the battery chemistry, there are different options available to battery makers. Not so for graphite, a material for which there are no substitutes.

      ...

      Natural vs synthetic

Given that several of the above plants are proposing to make anodes from synthetic versus natural graphite, it’s important to know the difference.

Natural graphite is mined whereas synthetic or artificial graphite is produced by heating petroleum coke feedstock in a special furnace. Because synthetic graphite must be baked at 3,000 degrees Celsius, this method is costly and very energy-intensive. Battery Power Online states the graphite anode is responsible for 50% of the CO2 emissions from battery production, and that synthetic graphite is often processed with coal power in Mongolia.

Last year, Fastmarkets wrote that Producing spherical graphite out of natural mined flake material requires less energy than the Acheson furnace process employed in synthetic graphitization.

The latter is obviously reflected in a significant cost savings for natural graphite, which is priced around half that of synthetic.

Moreover, natural flake graphite exhibits a much higher crystalline structure than synthetic, and is therefore more electrically and thermally conductive. According to Canada Carbon, natural graphite’s ability to be exfoliated and then pressed into sheets make it the preferred structure for heat sinks, fuel cells and gaskets.

While the current graphite mix in China is about 80% synthetic and 20% natural (most anode technologies employ a blend of both), the surging costs related to graphitization of synthetic have Chinese battery manufacturers considering a shift to using more natural graphite.

      Conclusion

Graphite market outlook: Five key factors to watch - August 15, 2023

Graphite demand and prices enjoyed phenomenal growth last year, largely supported by expansion in the electric vehicle (EV) lithium-ion battery sector, where graphite is the key raw material consumed in EV battery anodes. While the long-term outlook for graphite remains strong, the industry is facing near-term obstacles. Here are Fastmarkets’ five key factors to watch in the graphite market.

      1. The graphite long-term outlook remains strong

Natural graphite flake prices are forecast to rise significantly over the coming decade, propelled higher by exponential growth in the EV battery sector and underlying changes to global graphite supply. This is centered on the industry’s desire to diversify supply away from China, while also localizing supply in areas such as Europe and North America. As the industry targets local, diversified supply, the industry will also face a push for more environmentally friendly production and processing and utilization of green power sources. We expect to see this combination of factors increase the underlying natural graphite cost base, contributing to higher prices.

      Market Outlook

Amid a context of near-term macroeconomic uncertainty, the prices (FOB China) of essential battery materials such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, and graphite experienced significant downward pressure in H1-2023. With cathode and anode manufacturers reducing existing inventories or exercising caution with new orders, critical battery material prices dropped between 20% and 40% – 22% in the case of graphite – reported Benchmark Mineral Intelligence. The decline can be partly attributed to a slowdown in Chinese demand, new production capacity as well as the U.S. and Europe’s efforts to establish their own critical minerals supply chains.

Despite a slower start to EV sales in 2023, the market saw a year-over-year increase of 36% and is expecting growth in H2-2023 (Rho Motion, June 2023). The adoption of EVs in North America is currently being stimulated by the introduction of multiple new models by leading market participants and structuring partnerships to accelerate the deployment of charging networks.

Hence, analysts foresee a rise in graphite demand and an upward correction in pricing (Benchmark Mineral Intelligence, July 2023). NMG believes there is a disconnect between supply and demand dynamics in North America versus China and that the long-term price in this market should namely reflect lower geopolitical risk, compliance with the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act requirements, a “greenium” price premium based on improved carbon footprint of North American graphite, as well as the simplified logistics and inventory costs.

To meet the increasing demand for EVs and cleantech applications, the lithium-ion battery industry is now targeting the development of 8,930 GWh of global production capacity by 2030 through 399 gigafactories (Benchmark Mineral Intelligence, July 2023). Accordingly, the projected demand for battery materials is set to increase up to fivefold, with graphite outpacing the other metals at 10,537,000 tpa by the end of the decade (Benchmark Mineral Intelligence, July 2023).

NMG’s turnkey ore-to-battery-materials production model and its strategic advantages, such as its localization, proprietary ecotechnologies, proven production capacity, carbon-neutral profile, and favorable jurisdiction benefits including clean hydropower, flexible logistics, and stability in fiscal and political environments, ideally position the Company to serve Western markets seeking to reduce their reliance on Chinese supply chains.

Automakers seek supply from new Western graphite miners
Graphite biggest component by weight in EV battery

LONDON, June 21 (Reuters) - Automakers, including Tesla and Mercedes, are rushing to lock in graphite supply from outside dominant producer China, as demand for electric vehicle (EV) batteries outpaces other uses for the mineral for the first time due to soaring EV sales.

Auto firms have been slow to plan for graphite shortages, focusing mainly on better-known battery materials lithium and cobalt, even though graphite is the largest battery component by weight.

Now, car makers are knocking at the doors of new producers, such as Madagascar and Mozambique, as this year EVs are forecast to account for more than 50% of the natural graphite market for the first time, according to consultancy Project Blue.

Shortages of material produced outside of China will be even more acute as legislation in the United States and Europe aims to cut reliance on China for critical minerals.

"Automakers are in a real bind because there's been no investment in Western graphite," said Mark Thompson, founder and managing director of Australia's Talga Group Ltd (TLG.AX), which plans to launch production next year in Sweden.

Each EV on average needs 50-100 kg of graphite in its battery pack for the anodes, the negative electrodes of a battery, about twice the amount of lithium.

Zitat von Oginvest: Aus dem "Flyer" "Is all graphite created equal? Not all graphite is created equal"

Automakers are seeking supply from Western graphite miners

Reuters reports that EV manufacturers are actively seeking alternative graphite sources outside of China. The demand for graphite in EV batteries has surpassed all other uses for the mineral, due to the skyrocketing EV sales.

Graphite holds the distinction of being the largest battery component in terms of weight. Unfortunately, the automotive industry has been slow to address potential graphite shortages. Anticipated graphite shortages range around a global supply deficit of 777,000 tonnes by 2030 according to Project Blue projections.

Currently, China dominates the global natural graphite industry, producing 61% of the world's flake supply and 98% of the final processed material used for battery anodes, according to Benchmark Mineral Intelligence. This Chinese control of the market makes it difficult for automakers who want to qualify for EV subsidies under the US Inflation Reduction Act bans critical minerals that are mined, processed, or recycled in a "foreign entity of concern".

Hence, EV manufacturers are accelerating the pace in securing volumes to limit their exposure to China's dominance, ensure their eligibility to Western cleantech incentives and cut their carbon footprint thanks to greener natural graphite sources.

NMG's Matawinie Mine and Bécancour Battery Material Plant are set to provide the US and European markets with green active anode material, produced with sought-after natural graphite.
