Hedge Funds’ Disputed ESG Strategy Gets a Thumbs Down From MSCI

There’s no proof that shorting a company with poor ESG metrics will raise its cost of capital, according to Rumi Mahmood, vice president of ESG and climate fund research at MSCI. What’s more, shorting is counterintuitive as a tool for aligning investor interests with good corporate conduct and may lack the kind of transparency that’s generally sought after in ESG investing, he said in an interview.

It’s not a matter of “trying to be anti-hedge fund in saying this,” Mahmood said. “But it’s just the way ESG investing has evolved over the past few years.”

"maintaining peace, stability and social goods"
      ...
In a survey by Bfinance published Monday, 39% of investors said “recent geopolitical developments” were grounds for adjusting their approach to ESG. Among areas investors said needed to be reviewed were exposures to emerging markets, controversial weapons and fossil-fuel companies. :D
      ...

Yet some ESG investing clients are being advised to take another look at weapons. In a March note, analysts at Citigroup Inc. said there’s a good likelihood weapons will make it into the next chapter of Europe’s ESG rulebook, known as the social taxonomy.
In light of the war, the European Union looks set to define the arms business as crucial to “maintaining peace, stability and social goods,” they wrote.

In a similar vein, analysts at Jefferies said ESG clients who have historically avoided defense companies may shift course as regulators take another look.

Auch Allianz und Deutsche Bank: Globale Finanzkonzerne investieren hohe dreistellige Milliardensumme in fossile Energie
      https://www.finanzen.net/nachricht/aktien/trotz-klimazielen-…
      ...

ESG Pioneer Expects Shakeout for Funds Hyped by ‘Fairy Dust’
      https://finance.yahoo.com/news/esg-pioneer-expects-shakeout-…
      ...
After attracting trillions of dollars, the ESG fund industry is headed for a “shakeout” over the next five years, according to the man who coined the acronym.

The finance sector has “sprinkled ESG fairy dust” on products that do little to account for environmental, social and governance risks, said Paul Clements-Hunt, adding that ESG funds in jeopardy include those that track benchmark indexes, some of which invested in Russia.

“Anybody who uses ESG, sustainability or green purely as a marketing device is really heading for trouble,” Clements-Hunt said in a telephone interview from Nairobi where he runs an advisory firm called Blended Capital Group. “You’ll see a developing queasiness from marketing departments where, perhaps, ESG funds aren’t all what they’re cracked up to be.”

The warning comes as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine exposes some of the dubious choices money managers selling ESG investments have made. Such funds held about $8.3 billion in Russian assets just before the war, including holdings in state-backed energy giants, as well as bonds sold by Vladimir Putin’s government, data compiled by Bloomberg show.

That’s on top of a growing list of ESG products that hold oil, coal and weapons.

Europe Moves Closer to Enforcing ESG Rules on Foreign Firms
      https://www.bnnbloomberg.ca/europe-moves-closer-to-enforcing…
      ...
European lawmakers have agreed to force roughly 28,000 foreign subsidiaries to comply with the bloc’s ESG rules, marking a blow to representatives for U.S. corporations who had lobbied for the opposite outcome.

In a wide-reaching revamp of the EU’s reporting requirements for non-financial firms, the bloc’s parliament has dropped a planned exemption that had been backed by the American Chamber of Commerce to the European Union, according to draft documents seen by Bloomberg. An announcement is expected on Wednesday, as part of a wider package of corporate reporting proposals.

Europe has been working for years to ensure its rules for environmental, social and governance standards become a global benchmark. The latest proposal means the local operations of giant corporations such as McDonald’s Corp. and General Motors Co. would all be required to live up to the same ESG reporting requirements as their European peers.

The plan put forward by EU lawmakers, which will now be negotiated with member states, seeks to make it impossible for foreign companies to gain any competitive advantage via less rigorous ESG standards, according to Pascal Durand, the lawmaker overseeing the introduction of the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive.

U.K. Exploring Using Coal to Help Keep Lights on Next Winter

The U.K. held exploratory talks with Electricite de France SA about the possibility of keeping the West Burton A coal-fired power plant generating beyond the end of September, when it’s due to close.

The talks are at a very early stage, according to a person familiar with the matter. As things stand, EDF is running down stockpiles at the plant, which is located in the north east of England.

Drax Plc said it hasn’t been asked to keep open its two coal units that are scheduled to shut in September.

ESG Funds Had $8.3 Billion in Russia Assets Right Before War
      https://www.bnnbloomberg.ca/esg-funds-had-8-3-billion-in-rus…
      ...
Fund managers touting environmental, social and governance standards held at least $8.3 billion in Russian assets right before President Vladimir Putin launched a war on Ukraine.

The figure is based on an analysis by Bloomberg of roughly 4,800 ESG funds representing more than $2.3 trillion in total assets. Of those, about 300 were directly exposed to Russia, though the figure may be higher.

After almost two weeks of war, those assets are likely to be close to worthless. Investment managers who stayed out of Russia say ESG funds should never have been in the country in the first place. Philippe Zaouati, chief executive of Mirova, the $30 billion sustainable-investing unit affiliated with Natixis Investment Managers, said ESG fund managers need to stick to democracies, and avoid autocracies.

There is no responsible investment if there is no democracy,” he said.

“We have always thought that ESG was a question of having a sincere intention to use finance for something good; if it’s not this then it’s a management technique or investing style,” he said in an interview last week. “With the Ukraine crisis, we see very clearly that some ESG funds and managers have sincere intentions, and others just apply a technique.”

ESG Funds Managing $1 Trillion Are Stripped of Sustainable Tag by Morningstar
      https://finance.yahoo.com/news/esg-funds-managing-1-trillion…
      ...
Hortense Bioy, global head of sustainability research at Morningstar, told Bloomberg that sustainability tags were taken off “funds that say they consider ESG factors in the investment process, but that don’t integrate them in a determinative way for their investment selection.”

Bioy said funds that used “light or ambiguous ESG language” were targeted in the purge.

The correction marks something of a line in the sand for an investment trend that has enjoyed stratospheric growth, much of which took place before regulations were in place. It also offers a glimpse of the scale of potential greenwashing as the ESG label goes from niche to mainstream.

In such periods of turmoil, ESG investing can end up taking “a back seat,” said Victoria Greene, chief investment officer at G Squared Private Wealth.

“It’s all well and good to be an ESG investor until you start losing money,” Greene said. “Your first priority is protecting your portfolio, then your second priority is your investment strategy, including ESG.”

Overall interest in ESG topics tend to taper off when markets face steep declines, as investors turn their attention to performance. Alongside each recent drop for the S&P 500, media mentions of ESG have tumbled.
