Cisco's $28 bln Splunk deal set for March 13 EU antitrust decision
BRUSSELS, Feb 8 (Reuters) - EU antitrust regulators have set a March 13 deadline to decide whether to clear Cisco Systems' $28 billion bid for cybersecurity firm Splunk , according to a European Commission filing. The technology deal, which was the biggest of last year, will help to reduce Cisco's reliance on its networking equipment business, which has faced supply chain issues and slowing demand in the post-pandemic period.
The EU competition watchdog can clear the deal with or without remedies after its preliminary review or it can open a full-scale investigation as the next step if it has serious concerns.

Cisco Defeats Centripetal Patent Case That Led to $2.75 Billion Award
Dec 12 (Reuters) - A federal judge in Virginia has rejected cybersecurity company Centripetal Networks' patent infringement claims against Cisco Systems in a multi-billion-dollar fight over network-security technology.A different judge in the same court, U.S. District Judge Henry Morgan, had awarded Centripetal $2.75 billion in the case in 2020, marking the largest patent damages award in U.S. history. A federal appeals court later overturned that award on ethics grounds because Morgan's wife owned Cisco stock.
Morgan had died in the interim, and the appeals court directed that the case be heard by a new judge. U.S. District Judge Elizabeth Hanes held new hearings in the case and ruled on Monday that Cisco did not infringe the patents.

Cisco's $28 billion Splunk deal may ignite software deal frenzy
NEW YORK, Sept 26 (Reuters) - Cisco Systems' (CSCO.O) $28 billion deal for Splunk (SPLK.O) is likely to prompt other technology giants to splash out on similar acquisitions of software vendors with predictable subscription revenue, investment bankers and analysts say.
Splunk, a cybersecurity and data analytics firm, was in the process of shifting its business model from licensing its software to charging for subscriptions when it announced an agreement last week to sell itself to Cisco, making it the third-largest software acquisition of all time.
Cisco CEO Chuck Robbins, who has been expanding his company's services offerings to compensate for its moribund telecommunications equipment business, told analysts that the $4 billion in annual recurring revenue that Splunk would bring from its subscriptions was a key driver behind the deal.

Auszüge aus: Cisco makes largest ever acquisition, buying cybersecurity company Splunk for $28 billion in cash
...
Splunk’s technology helps businesses monitor and analyze their data to minimize the risk of hacks and resolve technical issues faster. Cisco has long been the world’s largest maker of computer networking equipment and has been bolstering its cybersecurity business to meet customer demands and fuel growth.
Cisco CEO Chuck Robbins emphasized the importance of artificial intelligence and using the power of AI that comes with Splunk’s technology to protect networks.
“Our combined capabilities will drive the next generation of AI-enabled security and observability,” Robbins said, in a statement. “From threat detection and response to threat prediction and prevention, we will help make organizations of all sizes more secure and resilient.”
...
The purchase price is equivalent to about 13% of Cisco’s market cap, a big number for a company that has historically avoided blockbuster deals. Prior to Splunk, Cisco’s biggest deal ever was the $6.9 billion purchase of cable set-top box maker Scientific Atlanta in 2006. At the time, Cisco’s market cap was just over $100 billion.
But as the public cloud has gobbled more of Cisco’s traditional back-end business, the company has needed to find new and big revenue streams. Cybersecurity has been the biggest bet.
In fiscal 2022, Cisco changed the name of its core switching and routing business from Infrastructure Platforms to Secure, Agile Networks, focusing on the need to have security built into networking gear. The company has a separate reporting unit called End-to-End Security, consisting specifically of security products.
Revenue in the core business climbed 22% in the fiscal year ended July 29, to $29.1 billion, and the security unit saw sales rise 4% to $3.9 billion.
....
“Together, we will become one of the largest software companies globally,” Robbins said in a conference call with analysts.
...
In 2023, Cisco has acquired four companies focused on security: Armorblox, a threat detection platform; Oort, which does identity management; and Valtix and Lightspin, both in cloud security.
