      Cloudy Debut For ReneSola
Carl Gutierrez, 01.31.08, 2:25 PM ET

The latest Chinese solar company to go public in the U.S. encountered stormy weather Tuesday.

ReneSola (nyse: SOL - news - people ), a two-year-old company based in Jiashan, China, manufactures silicon ingots and wafers for solar modules. It opened at $13 on the New York Stock Exchange but closed the day effectively flat at $12.99. The offering raised $130 million.

The ReneSola sale was a secondary offering for the company, which already trades on London's Alternative Investment Market, or AIM, a sub-market of the London Stock Exchange. Its shares have risen 19.8% during the past 12 months, although its performance has been volatile during that period.

"I think the anticipation was the [ReneSola] deal was going to be oversubscribed, but it wasn't," says Cantor Fitzgerald analyst Sal Morreale. "This is also an indication of how the market has been acting in general."

Last year was a standout time for solar companies, particularly those in China. JA Solar Holdings (nasdaq: JASO - news - people ) launched on the Nasdaq Composite Index at $15 a share, rising 18.7% its first day to close at $17.80. By the end of last year, JA Solar had risen fourfold, to $69.81. Other high-flying Chinese solar companies racking up great returns for the year include Trina Solar (nyse: TSL - news - people ) (up 184.7%), Solarfun Power Holdings (nasdaq: SOLF - news - people ) (179.3%), Suntech Power Holdings (nyse: STP - news - people ) (up 142%) and LDK Solar (nyse: LDK - news - people ) (74.1%).

U.S. solar companies also had a shining year. The big winner among them was First Solar (nasdaq: FSLR - news - people ), a nine-year-old company that opened on the market Nov. 17, 2006: It shot up almost tenfold in 2007, from $28.50 in January to $267 by year's end. SunPower (nasdaq: SPWR - news - people )--up almost fourfold--and Evergreen Solar (nasdaq: ESLR - news - people ), which more than doubled over the year, brought their shareholders joy too.

But 2008 has thus far been an entirely different story. Macroeconomic pessimism and uncertainty have led solar investors to cash out their profits. Big players have all seen their shares drop in value even more steeply than the Dow Jones industrial average's 6.9% drop. Suntech Power is down 35.6% so far in 2008, now trading at $50 a share. Trina, Solarfun Power, LDK and JA Solar have sunk 39.2%, 50.7%, 25.4% and 25.8%, respectively.

American companies have fared slightly worse: First Solar, SunPower and Evergreen shares have sunk 34.5%, 47.7% and 26.5%.

In spite of the slow start, fans say ReneSola is growing. In the first nine months of 2007, the company's revenues rose to $153 million, from $52 million from the same period a year earlier. Earnings grew to $25.5 million for the first nine months, from approximately $16 million in the same period a year earlier.

ReneSola has said it will use the money from the offering to expand its wafer manufacturing and to invest in a polysilicon manufacturing lines. ReneSola has a peak ingot manufacturing capability of about 378 megawatts and wafer manufacturing capacity of about 305 MW. During the first nine months of last year, it shipped 62 MW worth of solar wafers.

NEW YORK (Dow Jones) - ReneSola, the China manufacturer of silicon wafers for solar power cells, priced its U.S. stock offering at a discount Tuesday and the shares rose in the open market.
The company debuted in the U.S. in the wake of recent weakness in alternative- energy shares.

ReneSola (SOL) offered 10 million American depositary shares at $13 each, raising $130 million via underwriters Credit Suisse and Deutsche Bank Securities. The stock closed at $12.99, down a penny, in its first day of trades.

The IPO priced at a 9.7% discount to the company's closing price Monday on the AIM market on the London Stock Exchange, according to Renaissance Capital.

The Jiashan, Zhejiang company supplies thin sheets of crystalline silicon to customers including JA Solar Co., (JASO) Motech Industries Inc., (MIDIL) Solarfun Power Holding Ltd., (SOLF) Suntech Power Co. (STP) and Topco Technologies Corp.

The IPO comes despite weak performances this year from many alternative-energy stocks after a big run-up in 2007.

Suntech Power, for example, has fallen to $50 a share from near $90 a share just in the past month. First Solar (FSLR) is well below $200 a share after nearing $300 a share during the same time. SunPower (SPWR) is now in the $70s range after trading at $140 about a month ago.

"We believe we are well positioned to address the challenges presented by the current industrywide shortage of silicon raw materials," ReneSola said in its prospectus. \

"Aiming to enhance our competitive advantage as a low-cost producer and to secure a reliable long-term supply of feedstock, we have taken steps to expand into upstream polysilicon manufacturing."

Profit from operations grew to $25.5 million for the nine months ended Sept. 30 from $16 million in the year-ago period.

Revenue increased to $84.4 million in 2006 from $5.1 million in 2005. For the 2007 nine months, revenue nearly tripled to $153 million from $52.1 million in the year-ago period.
