Stock markets soared in Tokyo after the shock resignation of Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, as investors expressed hope that a new leader would lift the cloud of uncertainty that has depressed sentiment in equities for months.
Despite high polling numbers when he took over from Shinzo Abe a year ago, Suga has become deeply unpopular with the Japanese public. While Japan largely escaped the pandemic last year, Tokyo and many other regions have been under a state of emergency for most of 2021, as the country has battled successive waves of Covid-19.
Suga’s low approval rating has weighed on Japanese equities, said Hiroshi Namioka, the chief strategist at T&D Asset Management Co. Investors and ruling party politicians feared the consequences if he led the party into a forthcoming general election.

Japanese shares rose sharply on Monday, with both Nikkei and Topix hitting 30-year highs, as strong corporate earnings lifted investor confidence for an economic recovery from pandemic lows.
The Nikkei share average jumped 2.09% to 29,380.12 by 0210 GMT, the highest level since August 1990, while the broader Topix rose 1.75% to 1,923.96, the highest since June 1991.
“With the vaccine rollouts and the fall in the number of daily COVID-19 infections, expectations for normalization of the economy is rising,” said Soichiro Matsumoto, chief investment officer Japan at Credit Suisse Private Banking.
“Better-than-expected corporate performance in this environment is also lifting sentiment. Many U.S. firms have reported upbeat results and Japanese companies, particularly those sensitive to overseas demand, are following suit.”

Bei ihrer Ratssitzung bestätigte die Bank of Japan (BoJ) sowohl das Renditeziel von 0 Prozent für die zehnjährige Staatsanleihe als auch den negativen Einlagensatz von 0,10 Prozent. Zudem gehen die Währungshüter davon aus, dass die japanische Wirtschaft in dem Fiskaljahr bis Ende März 2021 um 5,6 Prozent schrumpfen wird.
Diese Erwartung liegt 0,1 Prozentpunkte unter der im Oktober genannten Prognose. Für das darauffolgende Jahr erhöhte die BoJ aber ihre Prognose von den im Herbst vorhergesagten 3,6 Prozent Wachstum auf 3,9 Prozent.
Es wird erwartet, dass sich die wirtschaftlichen Aktivitäten im ersten Quartal verlangsamen werden, nachdem die Regierung Anfang Januar den zweiten Ausnahmezustand für Tokio und die angrenzenden Präfekturen ausgerufen und die Maßnahmen in der darauf folgenden Woche auf sieben weitere Präfekturen ausgeweitet hat.

man sollte auch einen Plan haben, wenn man seine Nuklear-Kraftwerke - warum auch immer - stillegt bzw. außer Betrieb nimmt und hält.
