FTSE in-depth: ARM boosted by Apple bid gossip
Geoff Foster, Daily Mail
21 April 2010, 8:27am
Chip-maker ARM's tenure in the Footsie as the only representative of the technology hardware sector could be brief.
Geoff Foster
Foster: Rumours of an imminent mega-bid helped the Footsie shrug off fears of a hung parliament
Recently promoted after chocolate giant Cadbury was controversially swallowed by Kraft, rumours now suggest its days of independence are numbered. Its shares rose 4.2p to 243p on hot gossip that its biggest customer, American multinational corporation Apple, could be lining up a £5.2bn or 400p-a-share cash bid for the company.
As many as seven chips based on ARM designs are deployed in top-end iPads, which can connect to the internet via the mobile phone network. Apple's new all-singing, all-dancing touch-screen tablet computer sold north of 500,000 units when they went on sale in the US on April 3. Analysts expect Apple to sell roughly 5m iPads this year.
Consumers in the UK can't wait to get their hands on them and ARM stands to pocket an estimated 30p in royalties for every iPad forecast to be sold between now and Christmas.
Apple bosses know that over the next five years or so ARM's technology will be found in all manner of laptops, portable personal computers and internet servers, so it is keen to get the Cambridge-based group on board. A 'friendly' deal could very well soon be on the cards.
Rumours of an imminent mega-bid certainly helped the Footsie shrug off fears of a hung parliament and worries that the Goldman Sachs SEC fraud charge could escalate and drag other major US banks into similar investigations. It jumped 55.78 points to 5,783.69, while Wall Street initially rose 30 points in the early stages after the 'vampire squid' reported forecast-beating first-quarter profits of $3.46bn.
