"How many brands can China take?
      Commentary | Ash | February 27, 2012 at 1:55 pm
      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
      What brand is it?
How many car brands does China actually have? Nobody actually knows the true figure but guesses have been put in the 100 range, making China the country with the most auto brands, however this has not stopped other brands from entering China or even Chinese companies from making more brands. In recent weeks we’ve seen the rise of the Beijing and Shanghai brands but where will they be in the next two to three years? There can’t possibly be enough space in the market for all of these brands and models.

In the next few weeks we will see yet more brands hit the road and the media have not been shy in reporting on it, Chang’an-PSA will launch their DS range, VW will launch the Seat Leon, Beijing will launch the E-series hatchback in early March and FAW will launch the Olay brand at the same time, afterwards we can expect Chery’s Qoros brand, Guangzhou Mitsubishi, Guangzhou Fiat, Nissan’s Venucia brand, Hyundai’s Shou Wang sub brand, and of course Kia’s own Dian Yue Sub brand. In the next few months, consumers are going to see a barrage of new brands in a market that is slowing down, will any of them see any sales?

When compared with the more mature markets in the Eurozone and North America, the Chinese market seems almost chaotic. America has three strong passenger car companies, GM, Ford, Chrysler which each have their own subsidary brands, Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Ford has Lincoln, and Chrysler have Jeep, Dodge and RAM. Korea has two brands – Hyundai and Kia, of course Ssangyong helps us round it up to three, four if you include Samsung. Europe has VAG which controls the lions share of brands (Seat, VW, Audi, Porsche, Lamborghini) but PSA, Renault and Fiat are not behind at all in the brand department. Over in Japan things are more clear cut, the Japanese three have their regular run of the mill brands and of course their luxury brands.

Although China has been the world’s biggest market for two years now the years of explosive growth that propelled it to the no 1 spot have ended. 2011 saw growth of less than 3% which shows that the market is aiming for slower growth that should potentially make the market mature, but with brands blooming overnight it appears that the room for brand growth has also ended.

According to statistics from CAAM, the biggest car sellers in 2011 were Shanghai Auto, Dongfeng, FAW, Chang’an, Beijing, Guangzhou Auto, Chery, Brilliance, JAC, and Great Wall which accounted for 87% of the cars made and sold in China, of course the majority of these being via joint venture companies rather than via independent brands.

Looking over the A and B segments it appears that certain models take the top selling crown by a long shot every single month, the VW Passat, Chevrolet Cruze, and Buick Excelle continue to be strong sellers months after they have hit the market and continually outsell their nearest rivals by large factors. The new VW Passat cleared sales of 30,000 units in January, the next best selling B segment sedan was the Toyota Camry which had sales of barely over 11,000 followed by the Buick Lacrosse which scored sales of 9,000. In the luxury segment, the German three of Audi, BMW and Mercedes have a virtual monopoly on the market, Lexus may try to get a look in but Chinese consumers clearly like their Bavarian offerings. Why Chinese manufacturers are eager to introduce more brands is still a mystery, on one side we can see why introducing a new brand to cover your new generation of higher quality vehicles is a smart step forward if your core brand has become sullied by years of being labelled as an economy car (see Chery’s introduction of Riich and Geely’s Emgrand brands) but for companies such as FAW and SAIC to introduce more brands when there current range of brands is perfectly suitable is the greater mystery, SAIC’s revival of the Shanghai brand should have been done instead of Roewe and FAW’s introduction of Olay seems laughable at best, especially when they already have Xia Li as a basic bare bones car brand.

New brands as well as existing brands that want to expand in the Chinese market are going to have to bring with them a Unique Selling Point to gain any traction with local consumers, Jeep has done so with its recent introduction of the facelift Compass and Patriot models and will likely gain strong market share in 2012, but for other brands that are content on making A, B, C segment cars they are going to have to bring something fresh to the party, otherwise they will have to join the great car names in heaven."

Hier ein Beitrag zu den Gedanken der chin. Regierung....

"Chinese government announce official car list, auto makers shares surge aheadIndustry News | Ash | February 27, 2012 at 2:39 pm
      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Chinese government put forth a list of cars that government departments will be limited to buying in 2012 over the weekend, it was good news for Chinese car makers but bad news for staples for companies such as Audi who have long seen their cars as being government staples.

According to the list issued by the Ministry of Information and Technology the government has authorized 412 different models for Chinese party cadres to buy with government money, every year the government spends some 80 billion RMB on bringing new cars into the government fleet, for the longest periods of time these cars were of course foreign and Chinese cars but going forward they will all be Chinese cars from Chinese brands.

Four pure electric cars have made it into the final list of 412 vehicles, 78 SUV’s have entered as well as 64 ‘multi purpose vehicles’ (likely pick up trucks), 265 gasoline and diesel sedans have been entered as well. On the branding front it, Hong Qi, Xia Li, Dongfeng’s Fengshen sedan range as well as Feng Xing MPV range, Chang-an’s mini van range, Guangzhou Auto’s Trumpchi, and SAIC’s MG and Roewe vehicles have all become official government vehicles for this year. Lifan, BYD, Chery, Geely, Great Wall, Brilliance and Zotye have all won places in the list. However it should be pointed out that the vast majority of cars are 1.5L or 1.6L with the larger sedans coming in at 1.8L and as mentioned, MPV’s and SUV’s are able to become 2.0L and 2.4L models.

For example, a mid level cadre for example is limited to a car of 1.8L or less and spend around 180,000rmb on that vehicle. One point that the government has made very clear is that manufacturers that do take part should invest around 3% of their earnings back into R&D.

Foreign manufacturers have been closed out of the system for now with Chinese manufacturers planning to reap the most of the rewards in the short term. Government staples such as Audi, VW Santana, Passats and various Buick’s are likely to receive a short term shock when the government tap turns off but these companies are big and smart enough to turn to other markets and segments to offset losses. The biggest long term worry from China Car Times is that Chinese manufacturers will fail to innovate as they will always have a strong customer base in the government fleet, thus offsetting the need to challenge foreign manufacturers with Chinese consumers and also in overseas markets."

Herr Jacoby sieht das kommende JV Geely/Volvo als recht efektiv an......

"Geely and Volvo wait for approval for joint venture in China
Published on February 27, 2012 by Tycho de Feyter

Even though it was sold to a Chinese automaker in 2010, Volvo Cars will have to form a 50-50 joint venture with new owner Geely to meet government requirements on local production, according to a senior executive of the Swedish carmaker.

Volvo has applied as a foreign brand for permission to build cars locally, so it must meet prerequisites that include a local partner, R&D facilities and developing a new brand owned by the joint venture, said Freeman Shen, senior vice-president of Volvo Cars and chairman of Volvo’s China operations.

More details about the joint venture will be released in the next two months, the company said.

Volvo CEO Stefan Jacoby said the joint venture between Volvo and Geely will be more efficient than other Sino-foreign partnerships because both companies are “in the same boat going in one direction”.

Both senior executives recently spoke to the media in the island resort of Sanya in Hainan province as the Volvo Ocean Race stopped over on its way to Auckland, New Zealand.

The nine-month around-the-world yacht race held every three years is co-owned by Volvo Group – which builds trucks, buses and engineering machinery – and Volvo Cars.

The race first made landfall in China in 2009 when it stopped at Qingdao. The decision to again call at a Chinese port was mainly driven by Li Shufu, the new Chinese board chairman of Volvo and head of Geely, who expects the move to improve understanding of the Nordic brand among Chinese consumers.

Pending government approval, Volvo’s local blueprint includes plants in the southwestern city of Chengdu and Daqing in northeastern China as well as an R&D center in Shanghai. Shen said that the company is developing two new models in Shanghai for future local production, the first of which will be a mid-sized sedan that is expected to roll out next year.

Despite the unexpectedly long period to gain government approval, Shen said the company is sticking to its original plan to sell 200,000 cars a year in China in 2015, when it expects local production to play a decisive role.

Leading German luxury brands Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz together have about 80 percent of the premium car market in China mainly due to their successful strategy to build cars locally.

Volvo now imports the C30 and C70 coupes, S60 sedan, V60 wagon and the XC60 and XC90 SUVs to China. It also makes a small number of S40 and S80L models in the country at a Ford joint venture under contracts that will expire in 2015 and 2018.

Volvo’s China sales surged 55 percent last year to more than 47,000 cars, making the country its third-biggest market globally. Its worldwide deliveries last year totaled nearly 450,000 cars, with the US and Sweden the top two markets.

According to the Swedish newspaper Dagens Industri, CEO Jacoby said the company expects to deliver about 60,000 cars in China this year, a 25 percent increase year-on-year.

But Shen noted that the most important milestones in 2012 will be building plants and a dealer network for locally made products.

He added that the company will nearly double its number of employees in China to about 1,700 to 2,000 by the end of this year
      .

Volvo’s new Universe concept car that made its debut at the Shanghai auto show last April was brought to Sanya for display together along with some hybrid and electric models.

The carmaker’s first full-sized luxury saloon – positioned to compete with top-of-the-line counterparts like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class – is likely to hit the market in 2015, Shen said."
