      Thomas Cook ditches online discounts

      19 December 2012 | By Sophie Griffiths

Thomas Cook is bringing in flat pricing across all its distribution channels, with holidays priced the same whether booked online, in-store or over the phone, TTG has learned.

The move, which Thomas Cook said would “change travel retailing forever”, will begin from Boxing Day, and is the first of its kind. Holidays will be priced the same whether booked online with the operator, in one of its 1,100 stores, or through its UK based call centres.

The travel giant said the move would also enable independent agents, who have previously complained about being undercut by online prices, to compete more fairly.

Cook said it had made the decision to bring in same pricing following recent trials in store and online. It added that the initiative would “re-define what consumers can expect from the UK’s largest high street travel retailer, for evermore removing the doubt that the best price is only available online, even for identical holidays.”

Mike Hoban, marketing, sales and e-commerce director at Cook, said: “The travel industry is crying out for true multi-channel retailing, with more products, more channels and more markets than many other sectors. Clearly, a significant part of this multi-channel journey is consistent pricing across all channels.

“Following extensive trials in our stores and online, we’re revolutionising travel retail by bringing clear pricing to customers so they get the best price available at the time of booking, whether they do this online, in-store or on the phone.”

Tui also announced at the Abta Travel Convention in October that it was looking at bringing in flat pricing across its distribution channels, but would not give details as to when this would come into effect.

Meanwhile TTG understands that there will also be changes to commission levels, with independent agents seeing their levels drop “by a few per cent”.

Cook would not confirm this, but a spokesperson said: “We don’t discuss individual commercial agreements that we have with our partners - the launch of Price Parity is to ensure that our customers can get the best price for their Cook holiday, wherever they book.”

Tui rules out kneejerk reaction to Thomas Cook price move
      Dec 19, 2012 13:21PM GMT

Tui Travel has indicated that it will not be rushed into changing its pricing strategy in the wake of rival Thomas Cook’s move to single prices across its retail estate and online.

Tui has also ruled out any reduction in commission rates in the peak sales period, following speculation that Cook’s move was likely to result in changes to commercial deals with third-party agents.

Tui had previously made it clear that it intended to move to a single price strategy in the future, and was also considering service charges and changes to its commercial agreements with third-party agents. However, it was not expected to make the move until late 2014.

Cook today said it would be moving to single pricing for its own-brand charter packages with immediate effect, echoing moves by operators such as Kuoni, which earlier this year removed its 5% web discount to create level pricing on its website and shops and through third party agents.

John Boughton, director of ancillaries and commercial for Tui UK & Ireland, indicated there would not be any knee-jerk reaction to Cook’s announcement.

“We recognise that customers want great value holidays whether they book online or in retail shops. It is also clear that the industry is evolving with prices becoming much more transparent across multiple distribution channels,” he said.

“As part of our on-going modernisation strategy, we too are examining options for our future pricing approach.”

He added: “We will continue to ensure that any decision made is based on what is best for our customers and what fits with our business strategy.”

Referring specifically to commercial relationships with independent agents, he said: “We can also confirm that we have no plans to reduce or cut third party agent commission for turn of year.”

A spokesperson for Virgin Holidays said the nature of its product meant it had no immediate plans to change its pricing strategy.

“We’re not particularly surprised by this move, as flat pricing lends itself well to the charter tour product,” the spokesman said.

“We’ll follow consumer and market reaction with interest, but our channel-specific pricing strategy works well for us and we’ve no current plans to change.”

Thomas Cook introduces single pricing for charter packages
      Dec 19, 2012 09:33AM GMT

Thomas Cook is to introduce single pricing for its own-branded package holidays across its retail channels.

But there could still be variations in pricing across channels for individual components such as flight-only or room-only, a spokesman confirmed.

The UK’s largest travel retailer will offer the same price for package holidays booked online on thomascook.com, in-store or via its call centres. This will apply to its charter brands such as Thomas Cook, Airtours and Manos.

Cook said the single pricing will be introduced “from now on” following a trial in-store and online, and said it would “redefine what consumers can expect from the UK’s largest high street travel retailer”.

Mike Hoban, marketing, sales and e-commerce director at Thomas Cook, said, “The travel industry is crying out for true multi-channel retailing, with more products, more channels and more markets than many other sectors. Clearly, a significant part of this multi-channel journey is consistent pricing across all channels.”

He added: “Following extensive trials in our stores and online, we’re revolutionising travel retail by bringing clear pricing to customers so they get the best price available at the time of booking, whether they do this online, in-store or on the phone.”

Cook’s main rival Tui Travel has previously indicated it would move to single pricing in the future and is also considering charging service fees.

This is expected to have a knock-on effect for independent agents’ commission levels, but a Cook spokesman declined to comment on whether any changes to its own third-party distribution deals were being considered.
