Quartalszahlen bei TiVo schlagen Erwartungen

Der Hersteller von digitalen Videorekordern, TiVo Inc., meldete gestern
seine Ergebnisse des vierten Quartals und damit einem Umsatz von 1,4
Millionen Dollar. Im Quartal konnten den Angaben zufolge 63.000 neue
Kunden hinzugewonnen werden.
Der Verlust belief sich auf 2,19 Dollar je Aktie, während Analysten einen
Verlust von 2,64 Dollar je Aktie erwarteten.
TiVo, zu 30 im Besitz von AOL Time Warner, gab weiter bekannt, dass
seit Anfang 2001 17.000 neue Kunden hinzugewonnen werden konnten.
Insgesamt zählt TiVo damit einem Kundestamm von 153.000.
Weiter kündigte das Unternehmen eine Marketing Kampagne mit AOL
Time Warner an.

Verlust von 2,64 Dollar je Aktie erwarteten.

Außerdem wolle man demnächst bereits Planzahlen für das Geschäftsjahr 2003 bekannt geben.
Nachbörslich konnten die Aktien zuletzt um 37% auf 6,93$ emporschießen.

TiVo loss narrows, subscribers rise

NEW YORK, Aug 30 (Reuters) - TiVo Inc. (NasdaqNM:TIVO - news) on Thursday reported a second-quarter loss that was narrower than Wall Street
expected, on strong growth in both revenues and subscribers for its personal television recording service.
Driven by the results, shares of TiVo jumped to $6.28 in after-hours trade. That`s up from its closing price of
$5.90, off 24 cents, or 3.9 percent, in the regular session on Nasdaq.
San Jose, California-based TiVo reported a net loss of $34.5 million, or 82 cents a share, compared with a
loss of $38.9 million, or $1.09 a share, in the year-ago period.
The Wall Street consensus per-share estimate was a loss of 94 cents, while the expected loss ranged from 88
cents to $1.08, according to Thomson Financial/First Call.
Revenues for TiVo, whose personal video recording service allows viewers to customize TV viewing by
recording TV shows on a beefy computer hard drive for playback on TVs at a later time, rose to $4.1 million
from $869,000 in the same period a year ago and $3.2 million in the first quarter.
TiVo said it activated 40,000 new subscribers to the TiVo Service, up from 35,000 in the first quarter, bringing
the total subscriber base to about 229,000 as of July 31.
The company`s total subscriber base grew by 21 percent in the quarter, driven by price incentives from its consumer electronics partners and a successful advertising
campaign.
Another 40,000 to 45,000 subscribers are expected to be added in the third quarter, with revenues predicted at $4.9 million to $5.3 million, the company said.
LICENSING GROWTH SEEN, TUNER UPGRADED
Since their introduction to the market about two years ago, digital video recorders have been described as one of the catalysts that will transform the way Americans
watch TV.
But despite growing awareness of the devices, sales have yet to meet initial expectations, according to the Consumer Electronics Association. Analysts have
suggested that rapid growth may come after the recording technology is meshed into mainstream devices like set-top cable boxes.
Toward that goal, TiVo said it is actively working on boosting its licensing business, and predicts a significant revenue boost in fiscal year ending January 2003, to
above $63 million, driven primarily by its licensing opportunities.
``We are very much on track to making that happen,`` Michael Ramsay, TiVo`s chairman and chief executive, told analysts on a conference call, referring to plans to
spark software-based revenues.
``It will take us a little while to get these deals in place, (but) it is going to be significant for next year`s revenues,`` he said.
TiVo also announced that it would upgrade its service to a ``dual tuner,`` which allows certain subscribers to watch one program while taping another.
Wall Street analysts were encouraged by the results, citing the subscriber additions, which were on par with or slightly better than anticipated, and the upgraded
tuner.
``I think it was expected that they would do it (the dual tuner) at some time, but it is a real big change for TiVo and a real positive change,`` Dain Rauscher Wessels
analyst David Smith said.
TiVo earlier this week closed a $51.75 million private placement with financial and strategic investors. Three of TiVo`s commercial partners -- Discovery, NBC and
British Sky Broadcasting -- contributed a total of $22 million, consisting of cash and promotional services, to this offering.
The company, which analysts had warned might run into a cash crunch later this year, had said the deal arms TiVo with enough cash to keeping running well into
2002.
