treasury report before the bell 10-Feb-11 05:07 pm big day tomorrow (although news baked in unless they surprise us with some immediate regulatory action):
The U.S. Treasury Department plans to release a white paper on Friday morning, ahead of a conference call with Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner at 9 a.m. Geithner will then hold a Q&A session at the Brookings Institution at 9:30 a.m.

The beleaguered government-sponsored enterprises (GSEs) have become the subject of new criticism from a somewhat unexpected source: Lu Zhengwei, a senior economist at China's Industrial Bank Co., who is calling on China to sell off its holdings of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac securities.
The Wall Street Journal reports that Lu warns that the Obama administration's commitment of $134 billion in U.S. taxpayer funds to ensure the GSEs' meet their obligations to debt holders is an "empty check" because it was made without congressional support.
"Looking at the current political situation in the U.S., for the U.S. Congress to give a clear guarantee on this issue is almost impossible," Lu says.
Lu advises that the Chinese government sell its Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac holdings before the Federal Reserve ends its program of quantitative easing in June. Lu estimates Chinese holdings of GSE debt at $500 billion; China's government has never officially confirmed how much GSE debt it currently holds.
