COREL LINUX is terrific. Not perfect, but terrific. If you’ve been waiting to try Linux on your home computer, you’ve now run out of excuses. You put in the CD and reboot your machine and Corel does the rest. On a number of different machines I was able to install Corel Linux, hit the power switch, and boot up a running graphical version of Linux.

      Linux coverage

      • Archive of MSNBC stories

First, a little history. Corel decided to jump onto the Linux bandwagon a year or so ago by releasing Word Perfect 8 for Linux. There was a downloadable free version, and a pay-for version with a lot more features. At the same time, another Corel division was developing a Linux computer, the NetWinder. One thing led to another, and a decision was made to sell off the NetWinder, and continue on with a Linux OS of their own.
The NetWinder had run on a version of Red Hat, but after further investigation, Corel decided to base their OS on the highly regarded Debian distribution. They decided to use KDE’s desktop software (probably because it was easiest for Windows “people” to get used to), and developed their own File Manager.

      A MENU OF VERSIONS
Corel’s OS comes in three versions. You can download a 350MB file from the Internet. It’s a CD image file, which means you need a CD burner to make it useable. Upon Corel Linux’s release at Comdex two months ago, this version became the number one requested download at “download.com”. Corel will also sell you a CD of this “lite” version for $4.95 (U.S.) shipping and handling.
You can purchase a more complete version (with documentation, a “lite” version of WordPerfect 8, Netscape, Adobe Acrobat and 30-days of e-mail installation support) for a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $59.95 U.S. Or, there’s a 5-CD deluxe version ($89.95 U.S.-MSRP) that includes the full version of WordPerfect 8, eFax Plus service (3 months free), enhanced (OSS) sound drivers, a version of games “Civilization” and “Call To Power”, BRU backup software and an adorable little Linux penguin mascot (Tux). All the Linux server software that you’d expect to find in a distribution is in there too, but it’s the desktop stuff that Corel has perfected.
Corel wants you to put their OS on a Pentium machine with at least 500MB of free space and 24MB of RAM. Obviously more is better. But, even though they don’t advertise it, Corel Linux will run just fine on your 486. Netscape, and everything else will run a lot slower. But, it will run.

The Corel Linux install screen. Just fill-in the few pieces of information that you are asked then sit back and watch the software do the rest.

I tested two versions, the free download and the Deluxe. I installed both on two machines, a Pentium laptop with 64 MB memory and a Celeron mini-tower with 160MB. I’m happy to report that by using Corel’s Install Express I was able to get four nearly perfect installs. I booted from the CD and Corel did all the dirty work. The installation program recognized my hardware (nearly perfectly every time) and set all the settings. For those who’ve never had to configure a graphical interface by hand, from a script, you have no idea what level of breakthrough this really is.

      PICKING AN INSTALLATION
I also did two types of Corel Linux installations, one where the hard drive is formatted and optimized for the OS, and another where Linux is installed as a DOS file in Windows. The first starts when you turn on your computer, the other boots after a number of Windows Command Line prompts (in the Windows Safe Mode). The DOS file is especially cool for first-time Linux users who are sitting on the fence about a more “permanent” accommodation. The DOS file is also very easy to “uninstall”. The only penalty is that the DOS file method runs slightly slower than a “regular” installation.
There’s also a program that will guide you through updating your OS via the web. It also allows you to easy install and integrate new applications. I tried to see how the upgrading works, but was never really able make it do what I wanted. I promise to try again soon.

Corel has developed its own File Manager application for its Linux distribution.

A giant reason to go for Corel’s Deluxe version of their OS is their 30-day phone installation support. What the software doesn’t handle, the help desk can try to fix. I called with a stupid question about ethernet cards and network configuration. It took Corel less than 60 seconds to get me to a help desk person. The guy at the other end listened, stayed on the phone, guided me step-by-step while I worked out my problem, and then asked how the automatic configuration had done with the sound on my Celeron box. He guided me through the configuration of the OSS sound driver for my machine, and then asked if I needed anything else. (By the way: Even with the OSS drivers, the sounds stinks from the mini-tower. I’d have much better luck with a good sound card rather than a standardized chip on the motherboard.) It was at this point I told the “help guy” who I was, and promised I would tell everyone how nice it was dealing with Corel support.
But, I’m saving the best for last. Early next month at Linux World in New York City, Corel is announcing their Office Suite 2000 for Linux. I have a copy of the Alpha. I’ve seen it in action, and I can tell you that it works really smoothly and seamlessly. Seems like it’s part of the operating system. I think that’s what they were trying to do. Expect Office Suite 2000 for Linux to ship early this spring.
I’ve been living with Corel on my computers for more than a month and I still find myself marveling at how easy it is to get used to this OS distribution. I also know why other writers and reviews are giving Corel’s Linux top marks. If you’ve been waiting to see what this highly publicized Linux thing is all about, this is the easiest way I’ve found to do so. Highly recommended.

Corel wins multi-million deal with U.S. government
OTTAWA Jan 21 (Reuters) - Software developer Corel Corp (Toronto:COR.TO - news) (NasdaqNM:CORL - news) announced a multi-million dollar deal with the U.S. Department of Justice on Friday, an important win in the rich and stable government market.

Corel said it will supply software for more than 55,000 staff in a three-year agreement, but did not disclose the value of the deal.

Ottawa-based Corel will supply its WordPerfect Office 2000 Standard and Professional versions along with voice recognition software called Dragon NaturallySpeaking, and WordPerfect Law Office 2000.

``We are pleased to provide nearly all of the components within the Department of Justice with a comprehensive solution,`` said Corel`s Vice President of North American sales, Georges Sabongui, in a statement.

The contract win follows a lawsuit which Corel filed against the U.S. Department of Labor in mid-December. Corel charged the department with sole sourcing a three-year software contract, which the company had valued at around $8 million, to Microsoft Corp. (NasdaqNM:MSFT - news)

Corel claimed a win in June from a similar legal battle in Canada where it was awarded C$9.9 million ($6.8 million) in compensation from the Canadian government. Corel had complained that a eight-year supply deal for about 300,000 computers was unfairly awarded to Microsoft.
