Globe says Goldcorp halts construction at El Morro

The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday, May 1, edition that Goldcorp has halted construction on the potentially massive El Morro gold and copper project in Chile after the Andean country's Supreme Court suspended approval of an environmental permit. The Globe's Pav Jordan writes that Goldcorp said construction work on the mine would be suspended until environmental authorities address deficiencies identified by an appeals court in Antofagasta. Environmental concerns are increasingly gaining traction in Chile, the world's largest copper miner, and major mining and energy projects have come under the scrutiny of local and international groups. Goldcorp had planned to start construction on El Morro in September, spending about $3.9-billion over a five-year period on a mine that will represent the company's re-entry into Chile, one of the world's most mineral-rich countries. Once built, the mine is projected to produce an average of 210,000 ounces of gold and 200 million pounds of copper per year to Goldcorp's account for 17 years. Goldcorp owns 70 per cent of the project, with New Gold owning the balance. Project managers expect to meet with Chile's environmental permitting authority soon.

aha ok das erklärt das minus.
bei den gurken hat sich insgesamt trotzdem dem ende hin einiges bewegt.
heut 8 aktien mit 5% plus und besser in meinem depot.
mein bester tag seit monaten... Zeckenalarm

PERMIT DECISION SUSPENDS EL MORRO CONSTRUCTION

The Supreme Court of Chile issued a decision on April 27, 2012, suspending the approval of the environmental permit for Goldcorp Inc.'s El Morro copper-gold project. The approval was issued on March 14, 2011. The ruling states that the permit is suspended until such time as certain deficiencies specifically identified in a paragraph of the Antofogasta Court of Appeals decision are corrected by the Chilean environmental permitting authority (SEA).

Sociedad Contractual Minera El Morro, which is owned 70% by Goldcorp and 30% by New Gold Inc., immediately suspended all project field work being executed under the terms of the permit. Safety and security staff will continue to work to protect the public, project equipment and facilities under construction. Activities not related to site construction, such as detailed engineering, design work and architectural planning, will remain underway.

El Morro will meet with SEA officials to confirm the scope of permitted activities pending SEA's compliance with the court's decision. Until the SEA advises El Morro how it intends to proceed, the specific actions to be taken and time required to complete those actions cannot be determined. However, El Morro expects the process will include additional meetings with the Comunidad Agricola Los Huasco Altinos, who requested the permit review, to consult on the potential impacts of the project on the Comunidad Agricola Los Huasco Altinos and to identify mitigation measures for those impacts. El Morro will co-operate with the SEA to ensure that deficiencies are fully and appropriately addressed.
