Metso Outotec has been awarded a landmark contract by PJSC MMC Norilsk Nickel to modernize one of the company’s two existing smelting lines at their Nadezhda Metallurgical Plant in Norilsk, Russia.
The contract value is approximately EUR 90 million, and the order has been booked in Metso Outotec’s fourth-quarter 2020 order intake.Metso Outotec’s contract includes engineering and delivery of a nickel flash smelting furnace and a heat recovery boiler with related automation and advanced digital products.
Replacing the existing smelting line with the latest process technology and furnace structures will significantly increase the line’s capacity and availability, reduce metal losses and ease maintenance. The new line will also allow for the easy connection and efficient operation with potential future sulfuric acid production and neutralization projects. The delivery of the equipment will take place during the first half of 2022.
“Metso Outotec is a long-term partner of Norilsk Nickel, supplying state-of-the-art equipment and technologies. Our cooperation allows us to solve the most important production and technological issues, such as increasing the reliability and efficiency of production,” says Sergey Dubovitsky, Senior Vice President, Strategy, Strategic Projects, Logistics & Procurement at Norilsk Nickel.

Metso Outotec is reorganizing its Metals business as part of the earlier announced turnaround program. The target is to create an operational model for Metals capital and services that suits the scale and nature of the business today and meets the specific demands of the Metals refining segment customer base.
”The restructuring and turnaround program aims to improve Metals’ competitiveness and financial performance as well as ensure more granular management of the various businesses and resources. The restructuring will enable us to size and scope our offering and resources in a more efficient way,” says Jari Ålgars, President, Metals business area at Metso Outotec.
Approximately 1,100 employees working with the Metals capital and service business around the world are within the scope of the restructuring program. According to the plans, restructuring is estimated to lead to a maximum 160 redundancies in the Metals operations globally, corresponding to targeted savings of EUR 15 million.
These figures include personnel working in Finland, where the number of redundancies is estimated to be 60 employees at most. The impact of the restructuring on different employee groups will be determined during the first quarter of 2021. Actions will be taken in compliance with local employment legislation in the countries in question.

Metso Outotec supports the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) emergency program in Beirut, Lebanon, in collaboration with UNICEF Finland, by donating equipment which will be used in the reconstruction of the disaster area in order to secure clean water, sanitation and healthier living conditions for thousands of children and families. The donated equipment is expected to arrive in Beirut in December 2020.
The explosion in August caused massive destruction of buildings and infrastructure. The equipment that Metso Outotec donates will be used to clear up the explosion waste, such as concrete from buildings and asphalt from roads and paving. The equipment is also used in recycling and production of aggregates for reconstruction. “When UNICEF approached us for financial support, we realized our equipment could help the people and the destruction area in a very concrete way,” says Eeva Sipilä, the CFO at Metso Outotec. “We are happy that through collaboration with UNICEF, we can offer our expertise and do our share in the enormous effort to rebuild the city.”
