500th Gen2(TM) Elevator System On Order / Fastest Selling New Product in Otis History
Farmington, Conn. (ots-PRNewswire) - Otis Elevator Co. announced
today it has booked its 500th order for the revolutionary Gen2(TM)
elevator system, making it the fastest selling new elevator product
in the company`s history. Otis is a unit of United Technologies Corp.
(NYSE: UTX).
Otis announced the arrival of the Gen2(TM) elevator system at
press conferences around the world on February 2. The system is the
first ever to use a flat, polyurethane-coated steel belt to lift the
elevator car, replacing the steel cables that have been the industry
standard for more than a century.
Otis began actively selling Gen2(TM) elevator systems in March in
three countries: the Netherlands, Austria and Switzerland. The 500th
unit was booked by Otis Netherlands last week, and will be installed
in the Centre Court project, located in The Hague. The customer,
Provastgoed Nederland B.V., ordered a total of 22 elevator systems
from Otis, 16 of which are Gen2(TM) elevator systems.
"Gen2 is a breakthrough system, with inherent customer advantages
in space utilization, reliability, and performance," said Otis
President & CEO Stephen F. Page. "We were confident it would be a
winner in the marketplace, but the historic speed of initial orders
has been a very pleasant surprise."
Page noted that the ramp-up to 500 orders surpassed the
introduction of the Otis 2000 line of elevators in Europe in 1994,
until now the most successful product launch in Otis history.
Because of the unique design and traction of the coated steel
belt, Otis has reduced the size of the machinery required to power
the elevator by about 70%. The smaller machine and a redesigned
computer control mechanism both fit easily inside the elevator
hoistway, eliminating the need for a costly separate machine room in
the building.
The largest single order for Gen2(TM) elevator systems was for 28
units for an apartment complex in Linz, Austria. The buildings are
now undergoing extensive renovations, and the elevators will be
installed in new steel-and-glass hoistways attached to the outside of
the each building. The (US) $2 million contract includes the
materials and construction of the new hoistways.
The product will be formally released for sale across Europe at
the end of May. Otis will introduce the Gen2(TM) elevator system to
markets in Asia later in the year, and to the balance of the world in
2001.
Otis Elevator, with headquarters in Farmington, Connecticut, is
the world`s largest company manufacturing, installing and servicing
elevators, escalators, moving walkways and shuttle systems. Including
the recently-formed LG-Otis Elevator Co. in Korea, Otis has more than
60,000 employees and revenues exceeding $6 billion. Otis products are
installed in more than 200 countries and territories worldwide.
