Sehr geehrte Boardteilnehmer,

habe gerade erfahren, daß wohl eine Behandlung gegen Aids per Spritze entwickelt
wurde.
Spritze gegen Aids und die Krankheit kommt dadurch nicht zum Ausbruch.
Weiß jemand etwas näheres?

Neue Hoffnung auf Aids-Impfstoff

Washington/New York (dpa). Ein Gen-Impfstoff, der an zwei Fronten gegen den Aidserreger vorgeht, stimmt US-Forscher hoffnungsvoll. Ihr Impfstoff, den sie "Vakzin-plus" nennen, kann eine Infektion mit dem HI-Virus, oder dem ähnliche SI-Virus bei Affen, zwar auch nicht verhindern. Doch er schafft es, die Abwehrkräfte so weit zu stärken, dass sie den Aidserreger danach in Schach halten und auf eine nicht mehr nachweisbare Zahl reduzieren.
Eine entsprechende Studie mit 20 geimpften Rhesusäffchen und einer Gruppe von Kontrolltieren stellt das Wissenschaftsmagazin "Science" (Bd. 290, S. 486) vom Freitag vor.

Der federführende Autor ist Dan Barouch von der Medizinischen Fakultät der Harvard Universität in Boston. Die kleinen Rhesusaffen (Macaca mulatta) wurden mit dem Gen-Vakzin plus zusätzlichem Immun- Protein geimpft und anschließend mit einem besonders gefährlichen Stamm von Aidserregern infiziert. Auch nach 140 Tagen zeigten sie noch keine Anzeichen einer Aids-Erkrankung. Von den Kontrolltieren ohne Impfschutz war nach der gleichen Zeit nur noch jedes Zweite am Leben.

Ich glaube, es kommt nicht so sehr auf die Spritze, sondern auf ihren Inhalt an. Haben sie den auch mit entwickelt?

Bevor man in Merck investiert, sollte man vielleciht erst das lesen:

THE NEW MERCK AIDS VACCINE/THERAPY WON`T WORK - AND IT
COULD SPAWN A NEW PLAGUE
Both in Science this week and in the Wall Street Journal
today, there`s talk of a new AIDS vaccine being developed
by Merck. Unfortunately, this particular vaccine model is nearly a
total failure. It`s untestable in humans and the way that
Merck is planning to deploy it could potentially spawn a
deadly hybrid virus - a super bug.
But let`s start with the economics of it all, before we get
into world devastation. Merck`s vaccine is no threat at all to VaxGen`s
primacy in the AIDS vaccine race. VaxGen has always been the
front-runner to develop a preventative AIDS vaccine. They
are already in stage III trials, and may get a vaccine approved by
November 2001. Nothing that Merck has reported can change this. In the
first place, the Merck vaccine isn`t a vaccine at all, but a therapy.
The monkeys in the Dr. Letvin/Merck study got HIV, even after they
received the "vaccine." They just didn`t die. In any case, the drug is at
least 8-10 years away from being an FDA approved human therapy.
That should be long after VaxGen has finished vaccinating the world.
The excitement in the mainstream press seems to be one of the
overreactions that happen occasionally in medical reporting. Hardly
anyone in the press knows anything about drug development. They
don`t know what 75% of the words in the journal Science mean. All they
hear is "Merck and AIDS vaccine" and then there`s a mad rush to write the
most provocative headline.
So let me lay out the facts for your. First, the Merck
study was done on monkeys -- presumably rhesus monkeys --
which have a radically different course of HIV infection
than humans. Monkeys die within about 200 days, not 7 to
12 years. They are known as being "very fast progressors,"
because their immune systems are very different from our
own. So how monkeys` immune systems perform with a
modified virus and a modified vaccine is not an indicator
of what will happen in humans. (Celera and Gizmo are
developing ways to model the comparisons to humans, but
this is still a long way off). And what`s dangerous about the Letvin
vaccine is that it apparently risks mixing genetic material, which could
cause devastating mutations. Here`s how the Wall Street Journal
describes it: "Merck`s new vaccine would piggyback HIV genes onto a
harmless virus." Well, there`s no such thing as a harmless virus,
particularly a recombinant one. More to the point, by including HIV
genes, and not just HIV proteins, like VaxGen does, Merck risks the
"harmless" virus exchanging these genes with another virus or bacteria
one which might not be so harmless. This is the most important point.
If the wrong genes from HIV get mixed up with a dangerous bacteria or
virus, it could make a super-bug which is invisible to the human
immune system. Imagine if influenza suddenly became invisible. It
would be an airborn infection that you couldn`t get rid of. You`d keep a
high fever until you died. Even worse, you could spread it. And this isn`t
just a theoretical possibility -- such a germ already existed. There was
an epidemic in 1918 through 1921, called the Spanish Influenza epidemic,
which killed 20 millions people worldwide, and 500,000 Americans.
In fact, the epidemic killed more people than the First World War.
No one`s willing to risk this again, so unless the Wall Street Journal made
a serious mis-statement about Merck`s plans, I`m quite sure this therapy
will never be tested in humans.
