PINE MP3 PLAYER OFFERS STYLE AND SUBSTANCE
Tiny, feature packed unit records voice memos, stores contacts 10/20/2000
By Ethan McCarty
NEW YORK, NY, October 20, 2000 -- A new MP3 player from Pine Technologies strikes a balance between fashion-forward styling and the range of advanced features that consumers demand.
Portable digital audio players come in a wide variety of sizes, shapes and flavors. Some of the most eye-catching are almost unbelievably small, and designed to be worn like fashion accessories. But in shrinking them to Lilliputian proportions, manufacturers also tend to shave features. Fitting the necessary electronics into tiny packages often means that memory expandability and full-featured LCD screens must go. Not so with Pine Technology`s latest, the Palmp-3.
The Palmp-3, to be available in the fourth quarter for $179, has an unusual disc shape that measures a mere 2.5-inches across and .77-inches thick. It isn`t the smallest MP3 player on the market or even the chicest, but it does pack a substantial feature set into its Lilliputian shell. For starters, the Palmp-3 has an LCD screen that boasts ID3 tag support. That means that the artist name and song title will scroll on the screen as the song plays.
Though the native 32MB of memory in the Palmp-3 would hardly hold enough music to last through lunch hour, the Palmp-3 is expandable to up to 64MB total memory (about an hour of music at 128 kbps) thanks to its multimedia card slot. Transferring files to and from the device should be relatively fast because it uses a USB connection instead of slower parallel port connectivity.
Beyond playback
The capabilities of the Palmp-3 don`t stop at MP3 playback. Pine Technologies also built in three features generally found on pricier portable players -- voice recording, a phonebook and an FM tuner.
A built-in microphone lets you record voice notes directly onto the internal memory for future playback; the files can be transferred onto your computer`s hard disc. The phonebook stores up to 100 personal contacts.
With the Palmp-3`s seven-band EQ, the user can customize the sound or pick from a selection of preset equalization schemes tailored for jazz, super bass, disco, rock and pop. The Palmp-3 comes in four colors, Pearl White, Fresh Green, Metallic Purple, and Gold-Rush Purple. Each player ships with a neck string, armband and a belt clip. Neckband headphones are also included in the package.
It`s attractive array of features and functions could win the Palmp-3 a following with the ever-fickle consumer electronics buying public. Other mini-players, such as Sony`s MC-P10Vaio Music Clip digital audio player, have failed the test of time because they lack amenities that MP3 fans crave. The Music Clip has no memory expansion slot or ID3 tag support, though it does have upgradeable firmware, which means that it could play new music file formats.
