SCIENTIFIC ADVISOR WINS MAJOR AWARD
(Aurora, Ontario) - Dr. Paul Walfish, a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of Helix’s
proteomics subsidiary, Sensium Technologies Inc, has been awarded the prestigious 2001 Jonas
Salk Prize for his pioneering research efforts and contribution to science and medicine.
Dr. Walfish was recognized for his outstanding achievement in pioneering the development of a
newborn screening program for congenital hypothyroidism which led to the prevention and early
treatment of mental and physical disabilities that would have developed otherwise.
As an internationally acclaimed scientist, Dr. Walfish has been actively involved in medical
research at the Department of Medicine, University of Toronto and Mount Sinai Hospital, where
his field of expertise included the study of protein interactions related to thyroid hormone function
and the role of proteins on the activation of target DNA. In addition, Dr. Walfish maintains a
clinical practice to treat thyroid disease.

AURORA, ONTARIO--Klean-Prep®, Helix BioPharma Corp.`s niche specialist product, has seen unit sales growth of 10% in calendar 2001 according to Helix`s Swiss-based licensee, the Helsinn Group.

Higher European sales were led by an increase of more than 15% in each of Germany, Greece and Portugal. In addition, product growth in Latin America was led by a 47% increase in Colombia. Helsinn has indicated that it anticipates that sales of Klean-Prep will continue to grow as Klean-Prep® is launched in Italy in the second quarter of this year.

Klean-Prep® is a specialist product for the preparation of the colon prior to colonoscopy and X-ray examinations. Klean-Prep® is a balanced mixture of polyethylene glycol 3350 (PEG 3350) and electrolytes which, when added to water, produces a clear, colourless, iso-osmotic solution.

AURORA, ONTARIO--Anika Therapeutics Inc and Helix BioPharma Corp`s drug distribution subsidiary, Rivex Pharma Inc., have signed an exclusive multi-year distribution agreement for ORTHOVISC (R) in Canada.

ORTHOVISC(R) is a therapy for osteoarthritis of the knee and is used as a treatment alternative when systemic drugs and lifestyle modifications are ineffective. An ultra-pure, highly viscous product based on hyaluronic acid, a natural component of healthy synovial fluid, ORTHOVISC(R) is injected into the knee to replenish synovial fluid and help lubricate, cushion and protect the joint. An estimated 3 million Canadians suffer from osteoarthritis according to The Arthritis Society.

Helix Signs Agreement With NRC`s Biotechnology Research Institute
AURORA, ONTARIO--Helix BioPharma Corp.`s subsidiary, Sensium Technologies Inc., has entered into a 2-year agreement with the Biotechnology Research Institute (BRI) of the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) to further develop and validate Helix`s proprietary drug discovery technology.

The agreement will see a close collaboration between Helix and BRI bringing together Helix`s Heterodimer Protein Technology and BRI`s membrane protein receptor expertise. This collaboration will enable the transformation of insoluble membrane bound proteins into a soluble form that is more amenable for high throughput drug screening. Irregularities with membrane bound receptors are implicated in a broad range of diseases including cancer. It is anticipated that the new technology will facilitate the discovery of new drug candidates.

Vor kanpp zwei Wochen wurde eine erfolgreiche Tour durch Deutschland abgeschlossen, deren Erfolge ab Ende Mai Früchte tragen sollen.

In diesem Jahr wird es noch kräftige Umterstützung geben.

Ist aber wirklich nervig, dass der Kurs auf Grund der Unbekanntheit auf keine der postiven Meldungen reagiert.

HELIX APPOINTS VICE-PRESIDENT, CORPORATE DEVELOPMENT
Helix Biopharma has appointed John Docherty, MSc, to the position of vice-president, corporate development at Helix. Since joining Helix in 1999, Mr. Docherty has played an integral role in implementing the development plan for the company`s lead product, the patented injectionless Interferon-alpha cream.
In his new role, Mr. Docherty will liaise with strategic partners, and seek and develop new opportunities for in-licensing and out-licensing of technology.
Mr. Docherty brings 10 years of experience in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries to Helix, including experience in international clinical and regulatory affairs with major pharmaceutical companies. HELIX BIOPHARMA CORP.: NEW HEAD OF TECHNOLOGY APPOINTED
Helix BioPharma has appointed Dr. Heman Chao, PhD, to the newly created position of vice-president, technology, where he will be responsible for overseeing the technology currently under development by Helix and its subsidiaries, and with its collaborators.
Dr. Chao has been promoted from his former position as manager, in Helix`s subsidiary, Sensium Technologies Inc.
Dr. Chao`s research has been published in Science and Nature, and he is associated with a number of filed and pending patents for the company. Prior to joining Sensium, he was a research fellow in the Canadian government-financed protein engineering network of Centres of Excellence (now PENCE Inc.) where he co-ordinated multicentre research in protein chemistry.
Dr. Chao earned his doctorate in biochemistry in 1994 from Queen`s University.
