Apple to Introduce iPhoto Studio & Studio in a Bag

      By Kasper Jade (Kasper@AppleInsider.com)

      April 17, 2001

Apple will soon be adding another application to their "i" line of digital media editing products that will fall alongside iMovie, iDVD, and iTunes.

The new product, iPhoto, will continue to expand on Apple`s goal of transitioning to a greater software company instead of a purely hardware based operation. This, in turn, allows the computer maker to more effectively market Macintosh PCs as there are more readily available predefined solutions for industry professionals. Solutions that are built from the ground up, for the Macintosh Operating System.

Said to be based on core Apple technologies such as QuickTime and ColorSync, iPhoto will interface seamlessly with the company`s FireWire In/Out technology, allowing the application to instantly rip and process images from many of the latest professional digital cameras, sources said.

According to sources, iPhoto, along with a second Apple-branded digital image solution called "Studio in a Bag," will present an Apple scriptable workflow environment that incorporates ColorSync technology to easily process photos with color clarity for digital media or print.

A sneak preview of both new Apple software products is scheduled during an Apple sponsored Digital Workflow For Photographers Seminar to be held in New York city this Friday.

OS X iMac May Contain Widescreen

      By Kasper Jade (Kasper@AppleInsider.com)

      April 17, 2001

Sources tell AppleInsider that Apple is scheduled to introduce the next generation of their iMac personal computers in July with availability in time for the late educational buying season.

Apple introduced the iMac personal PC in May of 1998, but the product line has seen very little cosmetic alterations in its three year life span. The computer maker has relied on increases in component speed and size, such as faster processors and larger hard drives, to sustain significant revenue intake over that time.

Sales of the iMac have successively become less impressive over the past year. The consensus among industry analysts is that the PC maker needs to do something radical to spice up interest in the iMac line, as the once revolutionary innovation of a compact and translucent all-in-one desktop machine is no longer pulling the demand that it did 3 years ago.

That much is indeed true, say sources employed by Apple, who claim that changes to the next line of the company`s iMac computers will be "bigger and more apparent than ever before."

Though it is unconfirmed by sources who can be considered reliable, its been said that the new line of iMacs are being designed with some of the same ideals as the company`s new Power Book G4. One of the highly rumored features is said to be a wide-screen display, ideal for home video editing in iMovie.

Aside from the rumored wide-screen, sources say the iMac will acquired a 133MHz bus, sport processors with speeds of 533 and 633MHz, and finally pack a NVIDIA GeForce2 MX graphics processor for superior gaming performance.

Sources are referring to this revolutionized line of iMacs as the OS X iMacs, as they say these will be the first of the units to ship with Mac OS X pre-installed as the core system.

      iTunes 1.2

Ever since the release of iTunes 1.1, the development team has been working on yet another release that will increase stability and add additional support for third party peripherals.

According to sources, version 1.2 of the software, which will be released around the same time that Roxio releases Toast 5.0.1, will now work flawlessly with the updated version of Toast and vice versa.

      Apple Network Assistant 5.0 Beta

Apple has been working on a new release of Apple Network Assistant, according to reliable sources. The release, which began its seeding process in February, is version 5.0 and is written for Mac OS X.

The final feature set has yet to be determined.

      Imation 2 in 1 FireDisk

Imation is apparently getting ready to market a new series of pocket-sized "FireDisk" drives in the United States. The drives are hybrid USB and FireWire and come in 10GB and 20GB capacities. They perform at 400Mb per second and 12Mb per second under FireWire and USB, respectively, and operate at 4200 rotations per minute.

According to sources, the drives may operate without the assistance of a power adapter when using a genuine 400Mbs FireWire port. The larger 20GB drive will apparently cost around $340 in the states.

      QuickTime 5.0 Turns Beta 19

QuickTime 5.0, or as it is now referred to as QuickTime 5.0.1, turned beta 19 last Monday. According to sources, Apple will apparently required all users of QuickTime Pro 5.0 to purchase a new "Pro" registration key, regardless of whether they have paid for registrations previous to QuickTime 5.0 This will apparently be in effect for both Classic and Mac OS X versions of the QuickTime software.

Additionally, there are apparently still some issues with sound input and audio capture under the Mac OS X version of QuickTime 5 that need to be ironed out before its release.

      Neue iBooks Dualprozessor-Macs Anfang Mai?

Was uns also Steve Jobs in die Mai-Bowle geben wird, bleibt abzuwarten. pm

      Sehr, sehr interessant!

      Quelle: www.macwelt.de - Morgenmagazin vom 25.04.2001

      Guten Morgen!

Two "totally new" Apple products out this year -- and not at Expos Rumor

New reports from long-time sources close to Apple`s hardware marketing efforts have confirmed that Apple is reaching the beta stage with two new products described as completely unlike its existing computer models -- while they are both based around complete computer motherboard architectures, these Digital Hub devices are reported to blur the line between computer and entertainment appliance.
Neither is referred to in the company documents Rumors has acquired by its shipping name -- only by obscure product codes which sources have asked us not to release as yet. But a few details are known about their common heritage:

      * Both will ship with Mac OS X preinstalled, at least one of the two with significant customization to the new Finder interface to accomodate the computer-illiterate consumer by dramatically simplifying the process of running simple applications like iTunes, QuickTime, iDVD, Mail, and the like.
      * One will be desktop-oriented and one portable-oriented, but both are intended to be lightweight and comfortable to pick up and move with the same ease one would portage a small stereo or mini-television. Interestingly, one third-party report suggests both devices use new high-tech hinges designed to last longer than the lifetime of the computers; the desktop device in particular apparently uses the hinge to adjust the angle of its display, bolstering the rumor that both of these machines will employ flat-panel displays.
      * Both devices are targeted at price points below the iMac, but Apple prominently mentions "cost uncertainties" in more than one document relating to them. Apparently, flat-panel TFT LCD prices still aren`t dropping as quickly as Apple has predicted last year when these designs had begun to really take shape...and similar problems with the present global economic slump`s impact on computer component prices appear to be playing a part as well. If Apple is able to meet its price targets, however, the desktop device will be in the $500-$600 range and the portable in the $700-$800 region.
      * Both devices are reportedly based on a greatly simplified motherboard architecture including some form of system-on-a-chip technology, but there have been sufficient contradictions between documents and reports from different stages of their development that it is not clear whether they will employ Motorola`s Thunderbird G3-class SOAC, or a more recently developed competing technology from IBM that would offer much better CPU performance by adding a more up-to-date 750CX-class G3 core but would probably not be available soon enough to ship both machines at full volume in 2001.
      * One of the key means to keeping costs down for these machines is restricting the kinds of applications that are run on them by default; by creating a Classic-free environment and not running a large number of complex apps simultaneously, RAM requirements of Mac OS X drop to about 64MB and smaller hard disks can be accomodated as well.
      * Complete feature specs are not yet available, but the basics appear to mirror current UMA-1.5 specifications: 100MHz main bus, 4X AGP graphics, 10/100Mbps Ethernet, USB 1.1, Firewire, 56Kbps modem, AirPort slot, etc.

Slimmer Titanium-like iBook Due Next Week

      By Kasper Jade (Kasper@AppleInsider.com)

      April 27, 2001

Apple has been refining the next generation of its consumer laptop, which the computer maker calls the "iBook," ever since sales of the units began to dwindle last year. The iBook currently sports an ice and translucent colored enclosure, and is quite bulky by today`s standards.

But if sources are to believed, on May 1st Apple CEO and co-founder Steven P. Jobs will introduce an iBook that is much more compact and about as thin as the titanium G4 PowerBook. In fact, rumor has it that the unit may feature the same color and make of titanium shell as the current PowerBook G4s, with what sources are calling a `tight cover` that reads `iBook.`

Inside the units are G3 processors ranging up to 500MHz running on a 100MHz system bus, sources said. The unit, which goes by the codename "Marble" or "P29", will feature a new thin 12.1" TFT flatscreen display with a standard resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels; the current iBooks only support a maximum of 800 x 600 pixels.

2 USB and 1 FireWire ports are said to be standard on the new unit, with the addition of a non-composite S-video out port. An Ethernet/Modem jack is also included, as well as an unknown port resembling a USB type A port.

A 10GB hard drive and 128MB of RAM are said to be standard on the high-end 500MHz models of P29 test units, though lower end models may ship with 64MB of RAM.

According to sources, P29`s graphics are powered by an 8MB ATI RageM3 (model P29s) graphics card. A hybrid CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive is standard on test units of the high-end 500MHz models, with single CD-RW drives expected in lower-end units.

Prototypes of some P29 units are said to contain an unknown expansion slot in addition to the slot under the unit`s standard portable keyboard.

The units identify themselves as iBook/PowerBook G4s and sport custom ROM files. Sources say the units will ship with Apple`s AppleWorks, iMovie and iTunes, and Pangea`s Cro-Mag Rally, Nanosaur and Bugdom.

Additional information may be posted before the unit`s debut, so keep that dial tuned to AppleInsider.com

      Noch mehr aus der Geruechtekueche.

Several sources who have provided spot-on reports about prototype Macs (including the original iMac, the first iBook, and the PowerMac G4) are now reporting that proof-of-concept PowerMacs with developmental G5-class PowerPC processors from Motorola have been demonstrated to at least two of Apple`s strategic partners.

The enclosures, motherboards, and components are all based on Apple`s UMA-2 chipset -- which will ship with next-generation PowerMac G4s later this year -- sporting up to 200MHz Double Data Rate (DDR) SDRAM memory, 8X AGP graphics bus, 800Mbps Firewire, and an ATA-100 IDE storage bus. These features have been seen in prototypes for over a year, however with the exception of 8X AGP, which is a much more recent development and probably won`t be seen in shipping Macs until some time in 2002)....the big surprise is the reports that a functional PowerPC 7500 (G5) prototype chip is being tested in these latest prototypes.

As previously reported on Rumors, Motorola`s version of the next-generation PowerPC architecture, called Book E, is embodied in the 7500. The G5 is a true 64-bit processor, with deeper pipelines for higher clock rates (up to 2GHz+), twice the on-chip Level 2 cache memory of the latest G3 and G4 processors, an enhanced memory architecture, added processing units, and one killer feature -- the ability to produce up to four CPU cores on a single chip, reducing the cost and complexity of powerful PPC multiprocessing configurations.

These first developmental 7500s are single-core, and do not include all of the features intended to be in the final version -- not all reports agree, but more than one suggest that the prototypes only include a 256K on-chip L2 cache, as opposed to the 512K cache specified in Motorola plans for the processor; apparently this greatly reduces the total transistor count of the chip and makes it easier to produce prototypes.

According to the reports, these prototypes are for demonstration and development only; they do run a complete version of Mac OS X, but are highly unstable even when downclocked to their most reliable speed, 900MHz. Reportedly, at least one prototype was booted and ran several tasks such as Photoshop filters and browsed the web with a 7500 running at 1,333MHz -- 1.33GHz! Unfortunately, within minutes that configuration was crashing, a clear indicator that there is much more work to be done before the machines are ready to ship.

Apple to Supply 23,000 iBooks to Henrico County Public Schools

Largest Portable Computer Sale to Education Ever

CUPERTINO, Calif. and HENRICO COUNTY, Va., May 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Apple® (Nasdaq: AAPL - news) today announced an agreement with Henrico County Public Schools to supply 23,000 iBooks(TM) to the district. This initiative will give every middle and high school student and teacher access to their own laptop computer with plans to eventually provide every teacher and student throughout the district with an iBook.

``This is the mammoth -- the single largest sale of portable computers in education ever,`` said Steve Jobs, Apple`s CEO. ``Apple is thrilled to partner with Henrico County Public Schools in their revolutionary initiative because when every student and teacher has access to wirelessly-networked mobile computing, learning reaches far beyond the classroom.``

``Students, teachers, parents and the community will now have the best technology tools in the world at their fingertips every day,`` said Dr. Mark Edwards, superintendent of Henrico County Public Schools. ``We chose Apple`s iBook because our experience has shown that it costs significantly more to support other platforms. Apple`s iBook is the best product available to meet our instructional needs.``

According to leading market research firm International Data Corp. (IDC), Apple was the leading supplier of portable computers to the U.S. education market for calendar year 2000. In 2000, Apple captured an 18.2% share of the U.S. education portable market and had the largest annual growth in this segment of any vendor. From 1999 to 2000, the portable growth in the U.S. education market was 37%, more than twice that of desktops (15%). In 2001, IDC forecasts that the rate of portable growth in the U.S. education market will continue to significantly outpace the rate of growth for desktop computers.

      NACHRICHTEN

      Morgenmagazin vom 02.05.2001

      Guten Morgen!

Apple rises from the flames -- again

      May 02, 2001 12:00 AM ET
      by Michelle RushloRELATED STORIES

The headlines said it all: Apple (AAPL) was bruised.

It had bushels of inventory and not enough buyers. Investors had soured on the flashy computer maker.

Whatever the Apple analogy, it was clear the computer maker`s performance had been downright dismal late last year. So, when its most recent quarterly conference call rolled around on April 18, the bar was low.

Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial/First Call only expected the company to earn 1 cent per share. But Apple, helped by brisk laptop sales and falling component costs, reported 11 cents, and investors did a double-take.

The miraculous turnaround was nothing new. Just when it seems the niche computer maker is on the ropes, sales rebound and investors are wooed back -- again. (Its stock is up roughly 14 percent since it earnings report, running roughly double its year-low.)

      Boom and bust

"Apple will always work on boom and bust cycles based on new products," said A.G. Edwards analyst Brett Miller. "I don`t think you`ll ever really see Apple become a stable long-term player. I would love to see them become that. But they are a great niche player, a great alternative to the beige box."

He and other analysts say the worst, at least this time around, seems to be over for the colorful computer marker.

"The worst is really behind Apple. They had their trough in earnings in December," said WitSoundview analyst Andy Preikschat. "Fundamentally, we like this stock."

Analysts credit Apple`s ability to get its bloated inventory down a quarter earlier than expected. They say the combination of slimmer inventory and a famously loyal customer base that is anxious to buy new products is helping bolster the company`s earnings and setting expectations higher.

"Without the new products and new applications, it would be a pretty bleak situation right now," Miller said. But the new products should mean a "long smoother upcycle" for the company in the coming months, he said.

      Keep `em coming

Since the first of the year, Apple has introduced its much-anticipated new operating system, a flashy PowerBook aimed at professionals and an updated line of Power Macs, including one that writes DVDs.

The Titanium PowerBook G4 was such a hit, the company had difficulty keeping up with demand last quarter.

"We are enjoying phenomenal sales of our notebooks," CEO Steve Jobs said at a news conference Tuesday.

He made the comment at the company`s Cupertino, Calif., headquarters as he introduced another new laptop for Apple`s line-up. Apple updated its consumer laptop, the iBook, by making it look more like the Titanium PowerBook.

      Loyalty counts

The new product introductions stand to be such a boon to Apple, in part, because of its loyal fan base, analysts say.

"They have a group of customers that are devoted to them. Those people are so loyal, they stick with them in tough times," said Stephen Baker, an analyst with the research firm NPD Intelect. "Apple is full of really smart people who come up with really good stuff, and they have this customer base that`s waiting anxiously when they have this really cool stuff."

Very few companies, especially in the computer and electronics world, can brag of that kind of customer devotion, he said. "People have these ingrained things in their stomach about what they should support," and Apple benefits from that.

What Apple needs now, analysts say, is a recovery in consumer demand and a rebound in its education sales.

Preikschat said consumer demand is probably the biggest catalyst for Apple, and after months of declining interest from computer buyers, "we`re seeing some signs in early April that demand is improving."

Consumers seem to be responding to price cuts from Apple and other computer vendors indicating the environment has stabilized, he said.

      Juicing education

The other key for Apple, he said, is its plans to juice education sales. "The summer season is a pretty key buying season," Preikschat said.

On Tuesday, Jobs said the company had reinforced its education efforts, which have suffered pressure from Dell (DELL) and other computer makers recently. He promised that in the next several months, other Apple education announcements would join the iBook introduction.

While he was not specific, Jobs did say the company is pumping research, sales and marketing efforts into its education market.

"Apple has been helping teachers teach and students learn since 1977," he said. "It`s in the DNA of our company. We care deeply about this."

      Hallo!

      OS X: They`re Baack!
      By Matt Johnston, www.osOpinion.com

A couple of years ago I would have thought it impossible but businesses -- small, mid-sized and enterprise -- are coming back to the Mac.

I`m not talking about a bunch of LCIIs in dusty storerooms running ancient terminal programs or a forgotten Powerbook in the drawer of a manager who harks back to the heady Mac days. I`m talking about G3 Powerbooks running Mac OS X (news - web sites) and rooms filled with Power Mac G4s being used to build code. But to succeed, the Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL - news) Mac OS X needs to step beyond the classroom and the little computer table under the stairs.

The best feeling is when you`ve worked hard for something and everything starts to work out. Years of work and the end result proves that you were right, completely justified in everything you did. Extremely satisfying.

I`ve worked on over a dozen platforms now and I`ve decided that each of them is good for certain tasks and certain people. I never thought, for example, there could be a single platform that would service both the needs of the seasoned code monkey as well as the needs of my techno-phobic parents. I`ve seen that platform now, and its name is Mac OS X.

      It`s Happening

I started out in IT with DEC UNIX while studying for a degree in genetic engineering. I`d see the odd little boxy Macs, but didn`t pay attention to them. After all, the Internet was the "great new thing" and I was busy with this new icon that appeared upon my workspace one morning. It was called Mosaic.

I didn`t get into the Mac until my final year, when a Mac Classic allowed me to write up my entire final-year project in three days and make it look the way I wanted it to. At that point I`d begun a romance that eventually took me into the depths of IT working for a very large telecommunications company, discarding my biology training, and ensuring I`d have enough moolah to put a roof over my head.

I was seduced by Solaris and hung out with HP-UX, but always eyed the PowerMac 7100 my colleague had on his desk and even had gadget-envy looking at the Mac SE/30 that sat discarded on a shelf. We both moved on, but the 7100 always had a place in my heart as a workhorse.

When my employer moved to Windows, I gathered as much Mac stuff as I could, saving them from a cruel disposal in a big hole somewhere in Wales, and took it all home. I was heartbroken, but the moolah kept me working.

I`ve changed jobs a couple of times since then, but I still remember feeling a terrible woe as I saw those poor machines heading out the door. Something was wrong.

      Macs to the Max

      Anyway, they`re back.

And like I said, I`m not talking about LCIIs in dusty storerooms running ancient terminal programs or a forgotten Powerbook in the drawer of a manager who harks back to the heady Mac days. I`m talking about G3 Powerbooks running Mac OS X and rooms filled with Power Mac G4s being used to build code. The glassy door on the server room hides a lot, but it does not hide the silvery sides and crystalline plastics of the G4s. I`m there to build the network, to add in multi-gigabit links for some new servers they have.

These are servers with Apple logos, networked via gigabit ethernet to incredibly fast RAIC file-system clusters. These machines are cutting build times to one-sixteenth of the time it previously took. Apple`s WebObjects is also pulling people back as they realize the best platform for Web development and deployment will be on Mac OS X.

I allow myself a little smile of satisfaction as my old boss, a self-confessed PC freak, paws my Pismo and starts to grill me on the version of UNIX installed on it. Is it Linux (news - web sites)? It`s not Solaris. It must be Linux, but it looks so good!

I took him aside and told him that it`s a Mac, then proceeded to show him the logo.

"They`re baaack! But, shhhhh ... no one is supposed to know."

Author`s background: Matt Johnston is a network engineer, IT trainer, lecturer and Mac evangelist from Northern Ireland working for a rather excellent dot-com company. He divides his time between work, his local Mac user group, teaching, writing and training people about networks and Mac OS X. He does not sleep.

      Guten Morgen!

Mac OS 9.2 update Beta Software

According to developers familiar with Apple`s Moonlight project, soon to ship as Mac OS 9.2, a fifth final candidate has been seeded to beta tesers. The latest build is very stable, according to the reports, and there is only one more externally seeded build on the schedule before 9.2 is to be declared Golden Master and readied for distribution.
One notable new component in the latest 9.2 builds is CarbonLib 1.4, designed to bring the Classic Mac OS up to parity with the Carbon functionality now in development for Mac OS X 10.1 (code-name Puma) as well as fixing a number of OS 9-specific bugs that cropped up in CarbonLib 1.3.1, the most recent released version.
If Apple is able to adhere to its schedule for Moonlight, the OS update should be available for download in the last week or so of this month with Full Install and Update versions of the CD available for order at the same time - then actually beginning to ship a few days later.

Apple beginning to clear out existing iMac inventory in preparation for Macworld? Rumor

Numerous reports from Apple sources and retailers are now pointing to the early stages of a classic Apple hardware inventory clearance for the current crop of iMacs. The Apple Store is already including several promotions (50% instant rebate on memory, free or discounted printers, special financing or a free RIO 600 MP3 player) to move the existing models out the door quicker, and retailers are being told to plan their next two months` orders now because of anticipated shortages as we approach Macworld New York in late July.
There have been numerous rumors as to what the next-generation iMac will be like; the consensus seems to be that a flat-panel display will enable a new, super-slimline form factor that retains some of the exsting models` funky styling while also adopting many of the elements of Apple`s new "2001" design scheme as seen in the Powerbook G4 Ti and 2001 iBooks. Cost is not expected to go down significantly as Apple is working on new entry-level Digital Hub devices that will take over the sub-$800 price brackets....but features are expected to jump significantly (combo DVD-ROM/CD-RW drives for all but the low-end model, for example).

      Market News : Analyst Actions
Sanford Bernstein Raises Estimates on Apple Computer
      By Eric Gillin
      Staff Reporter
      6/14/01 12:50 PM ET

Sanford Bernstein`s Vadim Zlotnikov has taken a shine to Apple (AAPL:Nasdaq - news - commentary), raising his third-quarter and full-year earnings estimates above Wall Street`s consensus due to strong notebook sales. The analyst kept the company at market perform, however, citing the uncertain long-term outlook.

"Recent channel surveys indicate strong initial iBook sales and continued success of Power Book, consistent with overall strength in notebooks. Notebooks should drive 60% of Apple`s sequential revenue growth," Zlotnikov wrote. As a result, the analyst took his third-quarter earnings target up to 17 cents a share and his 2001 estimate to a loss of 21 cents. The analyst didn`t reveal his previous estimates. Sixteen analysts expect the company to make 15 cents a share in the third quarter and lose 23 cents for the full year, according to Thomson Financial/First Call.

AOL TIME WARNER, Napster, EMI teilnehmen langfristig wohl sehr

      Apple At Expo: Carpe Desktop

By Matthew Rothenberg Special To Interactive Week

While Mac enthusiasts generally relish their reputation for nonconformity, the semiannual Macworld Expo gatherings on either U.S. coast have imposed a time-tested rhythm on major Mac news.

Like kids popping open the paper shutters of an Advent calendar, Mac fans spend the days leading up to the next big show speculating about what tasty new treats Apple Computer may be about to spring.

Regular readers of this column know that my own susceptibility to this variety of Mac sweet tooth has resulted in a bewildering scatter of hits and misses when it comes time to Expo predictions.

Thanks to my association with the folks who do the real heavy lifting in this industry, I`m sometimes able to nail Apple`s next moves despite the company`s best efforts to keep them hidden - or to make an utter fool of myself if my Expo forecasts turn out to bear little or no resemblance to the products Steve Jobs actually unveils.

With that time-tested caveat in mind, I`d like to field my best guesses for next week`s Macworld Expo/New York. Let`s meet back here next week and compare notes on how they bore out.

In general, I`m betting that the most significant pyrotechnics at the Javits Center will involve desktop hardware.

The current iterations of the professional PowerBook G4 and consumer iBook - both introduced within the past six months - wrought profound engineering and design changes on both sides of Apple`s portable line.

By comparison, enhancements to the newest Power Mac G4 and iMac systems were minor ones. While improvements in processor speeds, graphics acceleration and removable-storage options were all welcome, Apple hasn`t shaken up its desktop hardware in quite some time. The one exception? The Power Mac G4 Cube, which Apple unveiled at last year`s New York Expo and retired in June after its innovative, compact stylings failed to carve out a third desktop niche between the G4 tower and G3 all-in-one.

I`m predicting that a new crop of Power Mac G4 and iMac models at the coming show will adopt engineering lessons learned from the Cube while at the same time forging a far more successful connection with Apple`s core markets of graphics professionals and discerning consumers.

      Power Mac G4

On the professional front, I`m putting my money on a sleek new Power Mac G4 system that closely resembles the alleged spy photos that appeared this week on MacOSX.org before being unceremoniously yanked under orders of Apple`s tireless legal department. What I saw on the site matches up nicely with what I`ve heard is in the pipeline: a system - code-named Titan - that features a slimmed-down chassis, new drive bays and an improved speaker. While I`d love to see Apple break the 1-gigahertz mark, I`m going to wager that processor speeds of these new machines will be 733, 800 and 867 MHz. And while we`re on the subject of G4 Macs, I`ve been closely following my friend Nick dePlume`s speculation on Think Secret that Apple is on the verge of unveiling a full-blown server strategy that features rack-mounted, hot-swappable hardware with a plethora of PCI slots. I`ve heard some of these server rumblings myself, and I think that the recent upgrade to Mac OS X Server adds fuel to reports that Apple is thinking seriously of its new OS as a server platform. Personally, I`ll bet that Apple holds any such rollout for an event tailored more closely to a pro audience - possibly September`s Seybold San Francisco 2001 convention and expo.

      iMac Redux

Turning to the consumer side of the equation, I`m going to stick my neck out about a quarter-inch and join the throng predicting that this show will finally see major changes to Apple`s three-year-old iMac line.

It`s worth noting that some reputable Mac observers--most notably the good folks at MacMinute.com--are wagering that flat-panel iMacs won`t hit the street until the next generation, and that this summer`s stock will stick with the traditional CRT displays. Nevertheless, from what I hear, Apple isn`t even purchasing the tubes that shaped the current all-in-one systems. I`m voting with the hoi polloi that this summer`s model will bring the iMac up to speed with the flat-panel display technology deployed across the rest of Apple`s hardware lines. I believe that the new system`s form will follow function with a radically altered profile.

While I bet that processor speeds will rise a bit - to a top speed of 700 MHz, at any rate - I assume that the new system won`t make the leap from the PowerPC G3 to the G4. This distinction remains the primary differentiator between Apple`s professional and consumer systems.

Unless I miss my guess, all these new systems will come garnished with a complement of new peripherals, including a redesigned optical mouse and keyboard, new external speakers courtesy of Harman Kardon, and perhaps even a Webcam.

File under "Miscellaneous": I`d be astounded if Jobs doesn`t use his keynote presentation to initiate the next wave of grand openings of brick-and-mortar Apple stores and put his imprimatur on the company`s third-quarter results, which Apple is slated to announce the day before Jobs` Wednesday-morning appearance.

And what about Apple`s next software moves? Amid all the hardware hosannas, I`m betting that while Apple will by no means keep silent about Mac OS X, it will remain relatively soft-spoken; I predict the first major revamp to the new OS - code-named Puma - won`t be ready until sometime in August.

Meanwhile, I`m confident that the latest upgrade to the classic Mac OS - Mac OS 9.2, a k a Moonlight - will slip under the Expo radar with the same stealth that Mac OS 9.1 evinced during its launch at January`s Macworld Expo/San Francisco. Survey says that while Moonlight will ship pre-loaded on the new generation of desktop Macs, this penultimate version of the traditional OS won`t see a general release.
