Microsemi (MSCC: news, chart, profile), which makes circuits and semiconductors, could fall Monday after Alan Abelson suggested in his column in Barron`s that the stock may be overvalued. Abelson said Microsemi`s stock price may already discount everything but World War III, "and maybe even that." Citing an unidentified source, Abelson said the company derives about 15 percent of its revenue from military customers, while the company claims a third of its revenue comes from aerospace/military orders. The stock surged $2 to $34.50 Friday.

Microsemi Halves Forecast, Stock Dives

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Chipmaker Microsemi Corp. (NasdaqNM:MSCC - News) on Monday cut in half its quarterly earnings forecast, citing weakness in its commercial airline, space, computers and mobile handset businesses.

The news sheared more than one-third off Microsemi`s stock price on Nasdaq, where it was among the top percentage losers.

The warning is the latest in a series of gloomy reports from semiconductor makers amid a sharp pullback in demand for computers and spending on technology. It follows a warning last week from No. 2 chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices (NYSE:AMD - News) that it will report a substantial quarterly operating loss.

Microsemi said it expects earnings for the fiscal third quarter, ending June 30, of 4 cents to 5 cents a share, down about half from its earlier guidance of 9 cents to 11 cents. Sales are expected to be between $51 million and $52 million, down from earlier guidance of $56 million to $58 million, in part from the sale of its low-frequency transistor business which is expected to knock $1 million off of revenues.

Analysts were expecting the Irvine, California-based company to earn 9 cents to 11 cents per share, with an average estimate of 10 cents, according to research firm Thomson First Call.

Microsemi said lower demand for its products as well as a delay in expected growth in its military business, which drives nearly half of the firm`s revenues, will persist into the fiscal fourth quarter. That triggered a stock downgrade by brokerage A.G. Edwards & Sons, which makes a market in Microsemi shares.

"Although we believe June could be the low point in terms of revenue and earnings for MSCC, we do not believe a turnaround is possible in the following quarter, therefore we are lowering our rating to `Hold` until business conditions improve," wrote A.G. Edwards analyst Christopher Chaney, who had originally rated the stock a `strong buy.`

Microsemi stock fell $5.28, or 39.91 percent, to close Monday at $7.95.
