Dell used the LinuxWorld Conference and Expo in San Francisco on Tuesday to continue its campaign to get companies to convert from Unix to Red Hat Linux running on Dell servers, revealing that it`s working with Red Hat Inc. to provide the planning and migration services needed to make the switch.
Dell also disclosed support for 128-node cluster configurations through its High-Performance Computing Clusters program.
Red Hat will help companies compare the costs of running Linux and Unix and provide a proof-of-concept model to show how Linux will work within a company`s environment. Red Hat also will handle the Linux implementation and code porting, says Randy Groves, VP and general manager of Dell`s enterprise systems group.
Dell Professional Services, a US$3 billion unit of Dell Computer, will help customers design, build, and implement Dell PowerEdge servers, PowerVault, and EMC Corp. storage systems with Oracle 9i Databases and Oracle 9i Real Application Clusters on Red Hat Linux Advanced Server. The joint services from Dell and Red Hat start at US$5,000.
Dell`s Linux clustering announcement incorporates its server and networking products as well as Red Hat`s software. Dell`s HPCC program consists of PowerEdge servers available in eight-, 16-, 32-, 64-, and 128-node configurations that can be clustered to perform as a single system. The bundles are available now, starting at US$75,000 for an eight-node cluster."
