Australien: Regierung will Telstra Aktien verkaufen

Telstra signs three year distribution deal with Harvey Norman
      Source: SYDNEY, Aug 7 AAP
      Published: Thursday August 7 2003, 6:00 PM

Telstra Corp Ltd has signed a three-year deal for major retailer Harvey Norman Holdings Ltd to distribute its post-paid mobile phones.

Telstra said the deal with Harvey Norman would increase its customer reach in metropolitan and regional areas by approximately 140 outlets, taking the total to approximately 4,800.

"Harvey Norman already sells Telstra BigPond Broadband, fixed line and pre-paid mobile products and this additional agreement will benefit both companies and, more importantly, our customers," Telstra said.

"The inclusion of Harvey Norman as a retail channel for post-paid mobiles will contribute to growth, help increase market share and add to our strong dealer and retailer network." advertisement

Harvey Norman Holdings director John Slack-Smith said its franchises had consistently looked to develop partnerships that supported their drive to be the predominant technology retailer in Australia.

"Telstra is one of Australia`s leading companies with a strong market position in the post-paid mobile industry," Mr Slack-Smith said.

Telstra shares closed down three cents at $4.68 while Harvey Norman gained two cents to $2.64.

Telstra and Optus allow inter-network picture messaging
      Source: SYDNEY, Aug 12 AAP

Mobile phone use is expected to surge even further after rival companies Telstra and Optus today opened the way to picture messaging, or MMS, between their networks.

Full colour images, video and sound bites will now be able to be sent between users of both networks, at a cost of 75 cents per message.

To date, picture images have only been able to be sent between users of the same network.

In a joint statement today, the companies said they expected their move to boost the popularity of picture messaging, as SMS text messaging continued its surge to more than 300 million messages a month in Australia.

Customers who are sent an MMS message but do not have an MMS-capable phone will receive a text message directing them to the carrier`s website where their message can be viewed.

Telstra not looking at capital injection for Reach
      Source: SYDNEY, Sept 3 AAP
      Published: Wednesday September 3 2003, 3:45 PM

Telstra chief executive Ziggy Switkowski said today the company was not looking at a capital injection to its troubled Asian cable joint venture Reach Ltd.

A $965 million writedown on Reach earlier this year was one of the major drivers behind Telstra last week posting its lowest annual profit result in five years, of $3.4 billion for 2002/03.

Hong Kong analysts said yesterday they expected Reach to lose another $150 million this year, although with Telstra having written off its carrying amount, it no longer equity accounts Reach`s losses.

"I don`t know the basis for the speculation around capital injection," Dr Switkowski told analysts on a teleconference today. advertisement

      advertisement

"We`ve refinanced the debt structure of Reach in the early part of the year (and) there is a revised business plan in place that has the support of the lending banks.

"(Reach chief executive) Dick Simpson continues to perform ... against that plan."

Dr Switkowski said Reach was operating in a "tough end of the business" and that Telstra didn`t see a near term upside.

"On the other hand we also don`t see any change to what we put in place some months ago," he said.

"So I`m not looking at a capital injection at all."

Govt rules out Telstra share buyback

      CANBERRA

THE Federal Government will not participate in Telstra`s $1 billion share buyback, Finance Minister Nick Minchin said today.

Senator Minchin said the government`s 50.1 per cent stake in the telecommunications giant meant participation in the buyback would complicate the process.

"As a result, the government has decided it will not participate in the proposed share buyback," he said in a statement.

Telstra plans to buy back between $800 million and $1 billion worth of its shares, with the offer likely to be completed by mid-December.

Last week`s announcement, which is expected to improve both the company`s earnings per share and increase returns to shareholders, pushed Telstra shares to a 16-month high this week.

Senator Minchin said the government still planned to sell its remaining stake in Telstra.

But it was subject to sale legislation being passed by parliament, services being up to scratch, and the share price reaching a level to maximise returns to taxpayers.

Laws for the full sale of Telstra passed the lower house last month but are still to face a Senate vote, where the government needs the support of four independent and minor party MPs.

Telstra agrees to upgrade old radio phone systems
      Source: CANBERRA, Sept 5 AAP
      Published: Friday September 5 2003, 3:00 PM

Telstra had undertaken to replace remaining old radio telephone systems in rural and regional areas with more up to date technology, Communications Minister Richard Alston said today.

Senator Alston said Telstra had signed a legally enforceable agreement to upgrade its phone network by replacing existing analog and digital radio concentrator systems with new technologies such as CDMA and subscriber wireless integrated network gateway.

The radio systems were used to provide telephone services linking remote properties in rural zones to Telstra exchanges.

"The upgrade will improve the reliability and range of services for people currently using older radio concentrator systems," he said in a statement. advertisement

      advertisement

"In particular the upgrade is expected to help address the key service quality concerns with these systems identified by the RTI (regional telecommunication inquiry) including low data speeds, lack of enhanced calling features, potential congestion and poor reliability."

Senator Alston said the deed of undertaking signed by Telstra was part of the government`s response to the Estens inquiry into regional telecommunications.

He said it highlighted the commitment to improving regional telecommunication services.

Telstra is currently upgrading telecommunications in remote parts of Australia in what are called the extended zones under a $150 million agreement.

It will begin improving communications in the rural zones within six months of finishing work in the extended zones.

Alston welcomes Telstra pledge to boost bush services
      Source: CANBERRA, Sept 8 AAP
      Published: Monday September 8 2003, 3:15 PM

Communications Minister Richard Alston today welcomed a commitment by Telstra to improve services in the bush.

Telstra released its final response to the Estens inquiry yesterday promising to implement all 19 recommendations and improve services in regional, rural and remote Australia.

The improvements could help convince key independent senators to support the full privatisation of the telco.

A Senate committee is looking into the Telstra sale bill which passed the lower house last month. advertisement

      advertisement

It is due to report back next month after which time the government will introduce the bill to the Senate.

It needs the support of the four independents - Senators Meg Lees, Brian Harradine, Shayne Murphy and One Nation`s Len Harris - to sell its remaining 50.1 per cent share of the company.

Senator Alston said Telstra was clearly committed to reducing phone connection times and improving co-ordination of new phone connections.

Telstra`s response to the Regional Telecommunications Inquiry would be delivered in full regardless of whether the company was fully privatised, Senator Alston said.

Union says Telstra selling off people skills
      Source: CANBERRA, Sept 11 AAP
      Published: Thursday September 11 2003, 7:30 PM

A Telstra union today said workers were furious that the telecommunications company had spent $281 million sacking staff in the past 12 months.

The Communications Electrical Plumbing Union (CEPU) said Telstra had listed the expenditure in its financial report under operating expenses, as $281 million of costs relating to restructuring.

This referred to the loss of 2,913 jobs, the union said.

But Telstra said the redundancies were necessary, and that all those retrenched had been given generous payments. advertisement

      advertisement

CEPU NSW spokesman Jim Metcher said the skilled workers who were sacked were one of Telstra`s greatest assets.

"The age profile of the field-based technical staff was 49," he said.

"These massive amounts of retrenchments will leave Telstra with no skilled staff in the near future."

Mr Metcher said experienced technicians with more than 20 years` service should be passing on their skills to the next generation of trainee technicians.

"But because Telstra are sacking these experienced technicians, this will not happen," he said.

"Without a contingency staffing plan, Telstra`s phone network will soon be in disrepair."

A Telstra spokesman said the company paid generous redundancies to its employees, that employment conditions in the industry were strong, and that jobs had increased overall.

"Most Telstra staff have gone to work in other (telecommunications) companies," he said.

The spokesman said there was little point in Telstra retaining staff who had nothing to do.

He said about four in every 10 system repairs could now be done by computer, compared with about one in 10 a few years ago.

Aust`s Alston says govt not negotiating on Telstra bill yet
      Source: CANBERRA, Sept 15 AAP
      Published: Monday September 15 2003, 2:15 PM

The government will not begin negotiating with independents on the full privatisation of Telstra until a Senate committee reports, Communications Minister Richard Alston said today.

A Senate inquiry into the Telstra sale bill is due to report back on October 14.

Senator Alston said negotiating with the four independents whose votes are needed to get the sale bill through the Senate was useless until the committee reported back.

The bill to sell off the government`s 50.1 per cent share in the telco has passed the House of Representatives and Senator Alston said the bill was expected to be introduced into the Senate after mid-October. advertisement

      advertisement

"We`ll have discussions with anyone who has some tangible suggestions to make but we`re not going to be rushing out there to have a deep philosophical debate at this stage," Senator Alston told reporters.

"If they`ve got proposals outside the report, then presumably they`ll bring them to us.

"If they haven`t we`ll wait till we get the report."

      Telstra launches BigPond safety net

      SYDNEY

TELSTRA Corp Ltd has launched a new user-pays anti-virus and spam protection service for customers of its internet service provider BigPond.

Telstra BigPond, which is Australia`s leading ISP with 1.43 million dial-up and broadband customers, said it had launched the service following its worst month on record for internet vandalism.

BigPond managing director Justin Milne said internet users were now highly attuned to the dangers of email borne infections, with worms and viruses the most common security incident reported by businesses.

He said that week day traffic on BigPond had doubled in the past year to about eight million messages, with spam now accounting for about half of all global internet email.

"As the internet evolves, worms and viruses can be highly disruptive to individual users and can cost businesses millions of dollars," Mr Milne said.

"Similarly, spam is on the rise with the cost of the scourge borne by Telstra and its customers.

"To help combat viruses and the growing spam epidemic, BigPond has spent several months sourcing the most up-to-date network-based spam filtering and virus filter protection."

To use the new service, customers need to tick a box and download the relevant program at a cost of $2.50 per mailbox per month for each of the spam filtering and anti-virus filters.

There is no need to load updates to the anti-spam and anti-virus software, with new patches loaded to servers when virus alerts are issued.

(Ende)

The federal government will reintroduce its bill to sell its stake in Telstra in three months time, Prime Minister John Howard said today.

But he would not reveal if the government planned to use it as an election trigger.

The Senate yesterday blocked the government`s bid to fully privatise Telstra when Labor, the Australian Democrats, Australian Greens and independents voted against the bill.

"We`ll put it back again in three months time and see what happens," Mr Howard told radio 3AW. advertisement

      advertisement

Asked if selling its 50.1 per cent stake in Telstra was worthy of calling an election, Mr Howard replied: "I`m not going to talk about what`s worth going to an election over, as things stand at the moment we`ll have an election in the second half of next year."
