EUROPE: Waiting for an internet share bonanza
The Nasdaq boom has not yet reached European markets - but it soon will, writes Nicolas Madelaine
Many investors have been dazzled by the fortunes made on America`s Nasdaq exchange from shares such as Yahoo, Amazon and eBay, but will they be able to repeat the experience with European internet stocks?
Judging by the limited number of European research companies which have set up teams to analyse the sector in Europe, the answer would seem to be no. And those specialised funds which have done so are still disappointed by the relatively low share price levels. "The ratio of stock market capitalisation on the two sides of the Atlantic is 1 to 100 in favour of the US," says Philippe Nataf of Regent Associates.
There are only about 30 quoted companies in Europe whose performance is linked strongly to the growth of the internet. They are also mostly small.
"Hence the problem of the shares` liquidity, which is made even worse by the sector being so volatile," explains Thierry Roussilhe at Financière Rembrandt. Yet, as he points out, daily turnover in Yahoo shares is more than a billion dollars.
But this type of comparison is not much help. The sectors which lie at the heart of the web - portals, search engines, online shopping - are still at an embryonic stage in European markets.
Thus it is the American financial markets which experience all the internet fever. There are no European equivalents of Yahoo, eBay or Amazon. Since it seems inevitable that Europe will catch up, some investors are now prepared to put money into European internet shares.
One factor which should help European high-tech share prices to rise is an increase in company mergers. Michael Kraland and Laurent Sberro of broker Trinity Capital Partners certainly expect this to happen. In their view, European companies - which tend to be mainly local - will merge or be bought by US companies.
oreover, internet fever, already noticeable in Germany, could spread throughout the rest of Europe as bigger companies become involved. This summer, Freeserve, a subsidiary of Dixons, the electrical retailer, came to the UK stock market in a blaze of publicity after pioneering free internet access.
In Europe, internet service providers (ISPs) tend to provide web access on a subscription basis, though services are increasingly becoming free. Also, they mostly belong to telecoms companies, such as France Télécom`s Wanadoo and Deutsche Telekom`s T-Online.
The rare independent ISPs are in the UK, exceptions being France`s Infonie and Jet Multimedia (owner of France Explorer). In theory, the market works out the valuation of such companies in a fairly traditional way. "The ISP`s business activity is similar to that of telephone companies," explains Muriel Faure at IT Asset Management.
But as in all web-based sectors, turnover multiples are the best valuation method, given the internet`s potential for growth and companies` need to invest to keep up with rivals, often by digging deep into their financial resources. Whatever financial criteria are used, however, European ISPs, such as Easynet and Internet Technology Group, appear undervalued against their US counterparts.
So it is tempting to evaluate them by comparing operating margins or even the proportion of turnover taken up by research and development.
Analysts confirm that they do not use traditional stock evaluation criteria for these companies. Turnover multiples have to be used here, too. Companies deliberately concentrate on growth at the cost of generated profits, explains Benoît Flamant at the IT Asset Management , it is business multiples and forecast growth that are taken into consideration.
Distorted view
On this basis, comparisons between European and US examples often produce a distorted view, with European companies looking fully valued. To a large extent, this reflects the keen interest shown by private investors in the Neuer Markt and their recognition of the potential of European e-commerce companies.
For these types of company, the best yardstick is thus the number of pages seen by net surfers each day. While Endemann`s figure of a few million may seem nothing against Yahoo`s hundreds of millions, financial indicators show the European company`s potential.
Another stock quoted in Germany is FortuneCity.com, a net forum provider which conforms roughly to thesame economic and financial logic as search engines.
"Discussion and group sites like FortuneCity.com, TheGlobe.com and Xoom.com in the US, which allow people to create their own web pages and form discussion forums, generate their revenue through advertisements, which can be placed by
subject matter," explains Maximilien Kamir, European internet share analyst at the Framlington Net Net Fund.
Some investors could be put off by these companies` modest market capitalisations, but they should not worry. The internet`s influence on European stock exchanges is set to increase. Some larger groups, such as telecoms companies, see a growing part of their turnover as being dependent on the web. Morgan Stanley believes these companies` revenues will benefit from this new media, given the amount of web development in Europe.
The investment bank expects the same to be true of big software publishers or IT services companies.

Was denn nun?

Mal sehn.
Na dann ruf doch mal an.

Fast kein Umsatz heute.

Guter Vorschlag!
